Before I Die is a global art project that invites people to reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in public space. This project was started by Candy Chang on an abandoned house in New Orleans after she lost someone she loved. Learn more here.
The Story It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what really matters to you. After I lost someone I loved very much, I thought about death a lot. This helped clarify my life, the people I want to be with, and the things I want to do, but I struggled to maintain perspective. I wondered if other people felt the same way. So with help from old and new friends, I painted the side of an abandoned house in my neighborhood in New Orleans with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with a grid of the sentence “Before I die I want to _______.” Anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space.
It was an experiment and I didn’t know what to expect. By the next day, the wall was bursting with handwritten responses and it kept growing: Before I die I want to… sing for millions, hold her one more time, eat a salad with an alien, see my daughter graduate, abandon all insecurities, plant a tree, straddle the International Date Line, be completely myself… People’s responses made me laugh out loud and they made me tear up. They consoled me during my toughest times. I understood my neighbors in new and enlightening ways, and the wall reminded me that I’m not alone as I try to make sense of my life. After receiving many requests, my friends and I created a toolkit and project site to help people make a wall with their community. You can also download all files for free to remix or create your own stencils.
Thanks to passionate people, over 300 Before I Die walls have now been created in over 20 languages and in over 50 countries, including Kazakhstan, Portugal, South Korea, Denmark, Australia, Kenya, Argentina, and South Africa. They have been a constant source of inspiration and therapy for me. Each wall is unique and reflects the people of that community. Each wall is a tribute to living an examined life. Our public spaces are as profound as we allow them to be. The historian Lewis Mumford once wrote that the origins of society were not just for physical survival but for sacred things that offer “a more valuable and meaningful kind of life.” At their greatest, our public spaces can nourish our well-being and help us see that we’re not alone as we try to make sense of our lives. Regularly contemplating death, as Stoics and other philosophers encourage, is a powerful tool to restore perspective and remind us of the things that make our lives meaningful. Each passerby is another person full of longing, anxiety, fear, and wonder. With more ways to share in public space, the people around us can not only help us make better places, they can help us become our best selves.

Hi, this is OnceInALongTime, call me Oncie. I have just recently heard about the Before I Die project and I thought it was a really good idea for people everywhere. This is basically a giant wall, which acts as a chalkboard, posted randomly in several places.
So, I'm posting a project like this here, for you guys to join in on it. All you have to do is write what you want to do before you die, in the format below. Post it in the comments and tell me if you have any favorite responses, because I probably will have some favorite responses, which will go up on the Favorites Wall below. Enjoy!
Before I die, I want to _________________________________________________________
Copy and paste the above format
Example: Before I die, I want to become a published author
Favorites Wall Before I die, I want my stories to become famous... -TheLoneAssassino (and any wish that follows being a writer and writing a book)
Before I die, I want to be able to go to a library and see my books on a shelf. -dejers (that would be wonderful to see, I soooo want that)
Before I die, I want to change the world with video games. -Immortus (and any wish that follows making a video game and being a video gamer)
Before I die, I want to marry a certain somebody with three letters in her name. You know who you are. -Asy (and any wish that follows love) Photos
Disclaimer I do not own this project. This project was started and owned by Candy Chang.
I remember hearing about this story in my school. Sigh... there are so many things I would want to do before I die, but these three are a priority for me.
Before I die, I want to confess my love to the real life Anya...
Before I die, I want my stories to become famous...
Before I die, I want to wear a well-made Assassin's Creed costume and free roam with it...
Well, since no one else is posting, these are my top 3 at the moment. Remember, I am eleven.
3. Before I die, I want to meet Neil Gaiman
2. Before I die, I want to become a published author
1. Before I die, I want to still have both my best friends after graduation
lol,
1. I want to publish enough books to have a shelf full of my books.
2. I want to have a shelffull of my books somewhere in my house.
3. I want to be able to go to a library and see my books on a shelf.
1. Before I die, I want to explore my writing ability(whether it be poetry, music, etc)
2. Before I die, I want to meet and converse with Marilyn Manson(somewhat deeper want than just meeting a famous person)
3. Before I die, I want to learn to play that gorgeous guitar hanging on my wall.

This is a great idea, so I'll just post up my bit.
1. Before I die, I want to change the world with video games.
2. Before I die, I want to go to New Zealand.
3. Before I die, I want to go BASE jump off somewhere really high.
Video games, the world has changed since the invention of video games already. Consider you're first wish done! Unless you mean create a video game (or something else), in which, in that case, I wish you good luck without the sarcasm!

2. Before I die, I want to meet and converse with Marilyn Manson(somewhat deeper want than just meeting a famous person)
3. Before I die, I want to learn to play that gorgeous guitar hanging on my wall.
I want to learn how to play the drums (I have educated myself in listening to notes as well and playing them by ear, as well as the base notes or beats in music examples, so... If only my teachers and my dad would stop playing on my drum set, I'd begin at this very moment.)
Before I die, I want to make a video game
Before I die, I want to write a book
Before I die, I want to make an impact.
I'm so going to add the "Before I Die... I want to write a book." because everyone here, since we're all writers here (you become a writer once you write, it's another thing to be recognized), we probably all have that wish. And for video games, when it does come out, let me know. I want to play it!
1). Before I die, I want to be a recognized and respected author.
2). Before I die, I want to learn and master that polished grand piano sitting in my living room.
3). Before I die, I want to marry a certain somebody with three letters in her name. You know who you are.
This is a great idea. Kudos to you for starting this.

Well, first of all, I did not start this. Candy Chang did, I just thought that us writers could use it. For reasons named above. I thought, when I first saw this, it was also a great idea so here we are now. Two, I think you are probably new here, so "Welcome!" if you are. Three, I hope the best for your third wish.

Ah, nono. I meant kudos for starting it on mcforums.
On the other hand, I've been active under a different name which has now retired but started along beta. Nonetheless thanks for the welcome and support for my third wish, haha. :D.

1) Before I die, I want to play perform Rhapsody in Blue and Clair de Lune on the piano.
2) Before I die, I want to save someone's life.
3) Before I die, I want to find out what happened to all of my odd socks.
1) I wish you a lot of luck, since I as well, am trying to perfect a piece on my piano/keyboard. 2) I'd like to be saved and to save, that way I can write about it in two points of views. 3) A goblin eat them. Poor socks.
1) Before I die, I'd like to cigarretes that are harmless.
2) Before I die, I want to show even the poor can smile.
And of course,
3) Before I die, I want to work a lot and publish a great novel someday.
Personal share (is that an oxymoron?): I'd really like 1. to be true because the blood in my aunt's wrist isn't, circulating properly. 2. Weird, I just finished a short fiction about that five minutes ago. 3. Of purse! 4. Wishes received. Good luck (no sarcasm intended).
