~~Chapter One~~
~~Adrift~~
Steve opened his eyes. He was on a hard surface, and it was rocking back and forth. Steve looked around. Water surrounded him. He must be on a boat. Steve sat up to observe an endless sea. Where was he and how did he get there? The last thing he remembered was walking down a dark and lonely street, and then...nothing. Steve did not like it. Something strange was going on. It was at that time that Steve saw things in the water. They were surrounding the boat. The creatures looked like Squids, flailing their tentacles around. Steve gulped, hoping they would not attack. A Squid came right up to the boat. Steve recoiled slowly, for the boat was tiny. But the Squid did not attack. Instead, it began pushing the boat, pushing it through the ocean. More and more squids began to do the same.
It was amazing. Steve watched in wonder and shock. This was not normal Squid behavior. Suddenly, Steve saw something in the distance. Land! The Squids were pushing him towards land. In a matter of minutes, the boat was rubbing against a sandy shore. The Squids' tentacles seemed to wave at him as they disappeared back into the ocean. Steve stared at them. In a few moments, they were gone. Steve turned his attention to the land where he had landed. He was in a desert. Cacti were all around him. Other than that, the landscape was bare. What was this place? Steve decided that there was only one thing to do: explore. He set out into the desert, not knowing what he would expect.
~~Chapter Two~~
~~The Village~~
Miles and miles, Steve travelled, not finding anything more than cacti. He was lonely, and bored, and hungry. There was just bare desert in front of him. Steve realized he must've been travelling for hours. He rested on a sandy mesa.
And then, he saw something. Water! There was a flowing river in a canyon only a half mile away. Steve realized he was so thirsty. He rushed over to the water and began to drink. "Thank you!" he bellowed out loud. "Thank you!"
To Steve's amazement, a voice called back. "It's good, isn't it?" Steve turned around to see a man with pale skin and a long nose looking back at him.
"Who--Who are you?"
"There is no need to be afraid," said the man. "I am Jonah the Blacksmith. You look lost." Steve nodded. Where had this man come from? Had Jonah been following Steve? "Don't worry son," said Jonah the Blacksmith. "My village is not too far from here."
Steve followed the Blacksmith eagerly. A village? Steve thought he'd never see one in such a large desert. They travelled for about two miles. Then, Steve saw about a dozen structures made of wood. It was amazing to Steve. Villagers looked at Steve curiously as he followed Jonah through the village. Finally, they stopped at a house that looked way different from the others. It had a cobblestone porch and had bin with lava inside.
"What is this place?" Steve asked in astonishment.
"This is the Blacksmith building," said Jonah, "my home."
Steve sat down at a table built for two as Jonah wandered over to a chest. He pulled out a loaf of bread. "Want some?" Steve nodded graciously. He was famished. In a few seconds, Steve had devoured the bread. He looked up to see Jonah looking outside a window.
"The sun is setting," Jonah murmured. "It's best to stay inside. Get to bed. There's a spare in the corner."
"But--"
"No buts! Do as you're told!"
Steve scrambled into the bed. Why had Jonah gotten so angry? Steve lied there, thinking. He wished he was back home. There was something strange about this place. Something very strange...
~~Chapter Three~~
~~The Siege~~
Steve woke up with a start. There was a groaning noise from outside the Blacksmith building. Jonah shot upright from his bed. "Oh, no!" he muttered.
"What is it?" Steve asked, his heart racing.
"Zombie siege!" yelled Jonah.
As he said it, the door crashed open. A green-skinned monster came into the house. Steve tried to scream, but no sound came out. In a flash, Jonah was on top of the zombie, beating it with a long, iron sword. In a few seconds, it was dead.
"We must get out," Jonah told Steve. Steve followed him outside. Zombies were everywhere. Only a few villagers had managed to get outside.
Jonah led Steve down a gravel road towards a hill. "We cannot stay here," he muttered. They climbed on top of the hill. There came a triumphant growl.
Several zombies were climbing the hill. "We're doomed!" screamed Jonah. Steve knew they were done for. As a zombie lunged towards Jonah, something whizzed through the air and struck the zombie in the head. It flew back in surprise. An arrow connected with the zombie again, this time killing it. The other zombies retreated into the night.
Steve saw who had saved them. He wore a leather tunic and held a bow. On his face was a black beard. "Who--" Steve began, but the stranger cut him off.
"Save it. We need to get out of here. I know a safe place. If you stay close to me, we'll be able to make it back in one piece. Oh, and by the way, the name's Notch."
