This is my first forum post. If you do not know what Numenor is then stop reading now. Just a theory I came up with.
This house believes that Minecraftian Nether Fortresses were constructed by Black Numenoreans.
To quote the Akallabeth, "Thus it was that because of the Ban of the Valar the voyages of the Dunedain in those days went ever eastward and not westward, from the darkness of the North to the heats of the South, and beyond the South to the Nether Darkness..." See? Nether? Yeah.
Now, the problem is, that if the Nether allows such faster travel compared to the Overworld, why did the Numenoreans build their fancy elegant Alcarondas and not merely use the Nether for transportation? Well, this goes back to the beginning of Numenor as a military power, to Aldarion and Erendis. After Gil-galad requested Numenorean assistance against Sauron, Aldarion needed an army, and maybe saw ships as a way to entice his isolationist people to look beyond the island? And he didn't take Erendis to Middle-Earth via the Nether, thus circumventing her conviction that if she was surrounded by water and away from nature then she would die, because the Nether is even more devoid of nature than the middle of the ocean is!
So Orthanc -notably made entirely out of obsidian- is really a giant Nether portal. Furthermore, the reason that Nether fortresses generate in lines running North to South is because of the ill-documented Numenorean genocide in Minhiriath, during which a forest which covered that entire region was reduced to Eryn Vorn, the Old Forest, and Fangorn. Now, while the Minhiriathrim were, as Men of the Twilight (Middle Men), vastly inferior to the Numenoreans in terms of technology, there were a lot of them- think Na'vi versus Humans in Avatar. Therefore, the Nether Fortresses were created to protect the Numenoreans from the Ghasts and Magma Cubes as they traveled to avoid the guerrilla warfare of the Minhiriathrim.
Of course, the Minecraft world is completely flat, and the world is round. See, after the Destruction of Numenor the Overworld was made round, but the Nether remained flat. No longer able to connect to the Nether Portals of Arda, and having not yet made contact by Minecraftia itself, the few Numenoreans remaining in that place were, like the Naz'gul, fated to suffer the same destiny as their fellow King's Men, and were blackened like their souls, becoming Wither Skeletons. After time, only one pure settlement remained, to meet ultimate destruction.

You do realize Nether is a term for hell, and LOTR and Minecraft are in different universes, and Tolkien died thirty-five years before Minecraft existed, right?
