I was young and small, not even 4 feet tall. My father was preparing the crops in the front yard while my mother worked on her flower garden alongside the house, under the windows. Me and my twin brother, Felix were playing cowboys in the backyard, pretending to tie each other to minecart rails, while the other person gives the minecart a shove and quickly “unties” the person before the minecart hits them. It was quite fun and we did it for hours upon hours. It was one of the few forms of entertainment around this place, ever since the playground got shut down. We played some capture the flowers, where we basically fight each other and try to take the other person’s flower and return it to their own flower pot. Felix always won, but that never ruined the enjoyment for me. It was just an average day at my house.
My mother stayed at home each day to take care of me and my brother, while my father went out to work at the mine. He would mine for hours, sometimes even 16 hours a day! He got to keep 30% of all the minerals he found, while the other 70% went to the town. Then, 50% of what the town gets that week, would be evenly distributed amongst the townspeople; the townspeople of Vesrael.
Vesrael was a good town, wait… no. It’s a GREAT town. The mayor is an AMAZING leader. The doctors are very good at their jobs, though they very rarely need to help anyone, because accidents rarely occur in this town. It’s been about 4 months since any accidents have occurred in Vesrael, most likely because our low population means less people to get hurt. The last accident was when the street patroller forgot to turn on the powered rails after Energy Saving’s Day and a sudden stop on the rail caused somebody to fly out of their minecart and get a concussion. But like I was saying, Vesrael is probably the best town in this entire realm, and I was hoping that it would stay that way forever... but I was wrong.

14 years passed by, and the city was still doing pretty well. Felix and I just graduated middle school and we were studying for high school. My father was out at the mine and my mother was at the hospital. She was recently in an accident and she was put into a coma. My mother no longer stays at home, because my brother and I outgrew needing to be taken care of. She now works as a detonations expert. They were preparing to detonate an apartment building that went out of business about 2 years ago. They were counting down to detonation, but they didn’t do a full evacuation… my mother got crushed by falling rubble inside the building.
Felix and I were at home playing wooltoss (a game we invented) when we heard a knock at the door. Felix ran to answer it. It was the mayor. “I have terrible news,” he said, as he walked inside slowly, “There was an accident at the mine. The ceiling collapsed. There were no survivors.”
My brother collapsed to the ground in tears, while I stood in shock. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My mother’s in a coma and now my father is dead? This is most definitely the worst day of my life, but yet again, I was wrong. “I’m sorry,” said the mayor as he slowly walked out the door.
CHAPTER 2
Three weeks passed. My mother was still in a coma at the hospital. Felix and I were forced to make our own meals and fend for ourselves constantly. We hadn’t been able to study for high school. Instead, we were cooking and each had low paying jobs. I was cutting grass for the neighbours and my brother was cooking meals for the elders.
I was sleeping in my bed. It was midnight. I was having a re-occurring nightmare about my father. It’s the same nightmare over and over again with no change whatsoever. It’s the 4th time I’ve had this dream in 5 days. Though I had no idea, that I would soon be living a nightmare…
“Wake up! Wake up!”
I woke up in my bed, with my brother standing beside me. “We gotta go!”
I stood up, and looked out the window. Dozens of dead bodies were scattered throughout the streets, bleeding on to the recently paved roads. One body stood out in particular. It was lying outside of the pharmacy’s door. A chunk of his neck was missing, and blood was pouring out. It was quite obvious that he was dead, until its fist clenched and it’s legs started to move. My brother grabbed my arm and pulled me down the stairs and into the kitchen. “Grab something sharp,” he said as he ripped a glass bottle out of the brewing machine and smashed it, turning it into a razor sharp weapon of destruction.
I ran down the hall and into my father’s bedroom and grabbed his pickaxe out of its casing. I ran toward my brother. “If it’s groaning and bleeding, stab its head. If not, leave it alone,” Felix said as he kicked down the door.
We ran outside into the city. My brother started stabbing these things in the head. I stood there watching. Was my brother turning into a maniac? One of these things started stumbling towards me, groaning. His arm was bleeding. If it’s groaning and bleeding, stab its head. I took a swing with my pickaxe and it went right through the side of its head. It fell to the ground. I ran after my brother. “What do we do?” I asked him.
“Get out of the town. We’ll figure out what to do after that.”
“Wait. What about mom?” I asked.
“This whole thing started in the hospital. Anyone in there is dead meat,” he said as he ran down the street, stabbing these things.
I stood there staring at him. I couldn’t believe that he just gave up on mom like that. I turned around and ran towards the hospital.
CHAPTER 3
I arrived at the hospital. Nurses and doctors were running out of the hospital screaming and some were bleeding. I quickly ran up to the hospital door, passed the front desk and towards the elevator shaft. I started pounding on the button. After a couple seconds, the light turned on and the elevator door opened. A pretty blonde girl was standing in there, surrounded by dead bodies. She was holding a golden sword, with blood dripping from its tip. She looked me in the eye. “Going up?”
I smiled and hopped in, quickly pressing the 6th button. The door closed on one of those crazy people’s heads, crushing it. The girl laughed. “So, how are you holding up with this plague?” she asked.
“Plague? I don’t understand.”
She replied, “It’s some crazy new disease. Basically, if you get bit or scratched, the disease gets passed onto you, and you become one of these freaks. I’ve seen it happen to dozens of people already. The transformation is horrific.”
That would explain the bite marks on those people outside. We arrived on the 6th floor. I ran out the elevator door, and I sprinted down the hall towards the room my mother was in. The door was already opened. The girl followed me as I crept open the door and walked in. My mother was gone.
I fell to the ground in front of the empty bed, almost in tears but I held them back. The girl put her warm hand on my shoulder, “C’mon. We’re getting out of here.”
I stood up and stared at the blood filled bed and walked out the door. The girl walked down the stairs. I followed her, “What’s your name?” she asked.
I didn’t reply, still being in shock of my mother being gone, “I’m Orlanda,” she said awkwardly.
We walked down the stairs to the bottom floor. I was tired out, panting like a dog after chasing its tail for an hour. She seemed energetic and ready to kill. She busted down the door on the 2nd floor and walked out into the hallway. She turned to her left and ran towards the first door. As she opened up the door, one of those infected things ran at me, as if it didn’t even see her. I stuck my pickaxe through its skull. The body fell to the ground, as did Orlanda. She started crying. I walked towards her, “What’s wrong?”
“That was my father,” she said.
It was then that I realised that we were going through the same pain. I grabbed her arm and pulled here towards the staircase. All of here energy was lost, as she walked slowly down the stairs. I opened up the door on the bottom floor. It was quiet. The floor was scattered with dead bodies. Everybody in the hospital must have either died or gotten out. Orlanda and I walked towards the revolving door and walked out onto the streets. I looked around. I saw some infected things stumbling around like a bunch of drunks, but no signs of anybody uninfected… This includes my brother.
CHAPTER 4
“I’m going to look for him,” I announced, as I ran down the hospital porch and onto the road.
“I don’t know who you’re talking about, but I can’t live survive alone. I’m coming with you,” she replied.
“I’m looking for my brother,” I said, “I don’t see him anywhere. He said he was going to leave the city, so that’s what I’m doing.”
“But it’s perfectly safe in here. Aside from a couple leftovers, this place is infection free!” Orlanda said, trying to convince me to stay.
“That includes my brother! I lost my father 3 weeks ago. I lost my mother a couple minutes ago, and I’m not losing my brother too. He’s all I have left,” I said as I ran towards the wall that separates the city from the outside world.
The wall was about 3 meters thick. This was no problem for me. I swung my father’s pickaxe at the wall and progressively made my way through the wall. The outside was dark, there were trees and shrubs everywhere and even more of those dead guys wandering around. Orlanda chased me through the wall, “Why are you here. You said it was so safe inside the city and I barely even know you,” I said to Orlanda as I stabbed the pickaxe up through the monsters jaw.
“I followed you because for all I know, we’re the last people left.”
That’s not a very settling thought for somebody who may or may not have just lost his brother. I fell to my knees with my head hanging low, “Oh, I… I’m sorry,” she said, apologetically, “I didn’t mean to- I’m sorry.”
I stood up and started walking away. I looked around for a place that somebody would take shelter. I saw a bundle of trees, but it was too open. No person would be idiotic enough to hide in that forest. I looked around a little bit more. Some mountains caught my eye, but the place that really robbed my attention was a small cave at the very bottom of Avery Hill. I ran over to it at full sprint, which is actually still pretty slow. Of course, Orlanda chased after me.
The cave was dark. There was no sign of anyone being in here, except for the dead body hanging out from an overhang about me. Blood dripped from its mouth and landed on my pickaxe’s handle. I continued to walk through the cave. Orlanda ran ahead, to look around. She whistled to me, “Come take a look at this.”
I jogged over to her. She was peering over the edge of a cliff, into the depth of a ravine. She pointed to the far end of the ravine. There was a light shining from around the corner. It was quite bright, and green moss hung from the ceiling. I couldn’t see any more than that, though I heard the groans of the dead, “You wanna go check it out?” she asked.
“Hell yeah.”
CHAPTER 5
“What do you think it is?” Orlanda asked.
“I don’t know. My father was a miner and he never mentioned cave moss. The light might have been made by a human… A living human,” I said as I jumped down to the bottom of the ravine.
It was 14, maybe 15 foot drop. She jumped down as well. The floor of the ravine was made of a mysterious black rock. I didn’t know what it was, but it was harder than any of the stone that caved us in, and that’s coming from someone who just spent the last 10 minutes walking barefoot on that stuff. There was some water spilled along the side of the ravine. Me and Orlanda walked around the water and up towards the light, “Hello?!” I yelled. GROAN! A group of these dead things ran towards us. A couple of them tumbled down the stone onto the warm black rock, “Let’s kick some zombie ass,” Orlanda whispered as she ran towards the dead.
I had no idea what a zombie was, but I’m going to assume that she just made it up in her head… But I liked it. She started stabbing these zombies in the head, and I ran up after her. The bodies fell to the ground, over and over again. They just kept coming, zombie after zombie. What are the odds that this many people wandered in this exact cave and got bit. It’s just not possible. Orlanda stabbed yet another zombie in the head. The sword went all the way through the head and into the stone wall. She tried to pull it out, but it was stuck. Zombies started rushing her from behind. I grabbed her hand and pulled her back. We ran back the way we came from, but this time we ran to the opposite side of the ravine and into a small cave that branched out from the ravine’s wall, just out of the reach of the sick ones, “You wanna just wait out here for a while. We can try a different route once it’s a little more clear,” I asked Orlanda as I watched the dozens of zombies wander around on the black rock.
“Yeah, we might as well wait. We can use this time to truly introduce ourselves. We haven’t really had a decent conversation since we met. I’ll start,” she began to explain herself, “Well, my name is Orlanda Brie. I come from the western part of Vesrael, 122 Andrew Lane, to be exact. My father barely survived an accident at the mine 3 weeks ago…”
“Wait! Let me stop you there… Your father survived the mine accident? I was told there were no survivors.”
“He was standing in the entrance. He only got his leg crushed by falling rubble. He was one of the lucky ones. But, he’s dead now,” she said as a tear rolled down her cheek.
I was a little bit worried about speaking up, probably because we just met, but I tried my best. I put my arm around her and bundled her up. Well… I guess this is considered a bonding moment.
CHAPTER 6
Hours passed. Orlanda fell asleep a while back. Every couple minutes, I would check over the edge to see if the ravine was clear. There were still 2 zombies stumbling around, tirelessly. I tapped her shoulder, “Wake up, Orlanda… Orlanda?” I said as she stayed still, not awakening.
I slowly laid her down on the ground, and walked down into the ravine. I crept along the side of the ravine. The 2 zombies didn’t notice me until I reached the end of the crevice. GROAN! “Damn.”
I jumped down and sliced the zombie in the head, and then I turned and stabbed the other in the eye. The coast was clear. I hopped up towards the moss. The light still shone brightly. It was flames, inside of a tiny mysterious cage. The cage was empty, aside from the small flames. I didn’t know what was going on, “Well this is unusual,” I mumbled.
Suddenly, a group of zombies appeared right in front of my eyes. I yelled and fell backwards, dropping the pickaxe on the ground. I started crawling backwards, kicking at the monsters, “Not good. Not good.”
I had no more space to move. I thought I was dead for sure. I said my prayers while I still had the time. I prayed for everyone I knew, which in this case was just 2 people, Orlanda and Felix.
I backed up as much as possible. My back was pressed right up against the corner. There was no way I was getting out of this, but for the millionth time, I was wrong. CLUNK! The zombie fell to the ground, then another one, and then another. Behind all the bodies revealed a man. He was a tall, dark and buff man. He was wielding a brick in one hand and my father’s pickaxe in the other. He must have picked it up beside the cage. He helped me up before sprinting into the room with the cage. He dropped the brick and the pickaxe on the floor and picked up the cage. It looked heavy. He was struggling just to lift it. He spun around a couple times, swinging the cage around and then he let go. The cage smashed against the wall, shattering into a billion pieces.
He tossed the pickaxe to me, picked up his brick and stumbled towards me, “Who are you. Are you alone?” he asked with the deepest voice I have ever heard in my entire life.
At first, I didn’t know if I could trust this guy. For all I know, he’s a serial killer, and I didn’t want to tell him about Orlanda or my brother, in case he IS a serial killer, because I definitely don’t want to see Orlanda killed and I REALLY don’t want to see him find my brother, and then slaughter him, “I’m alone,” I said, instantly regretting it.
If he does prove himself worthy, how will he react when I tell him that I’m not alone, and he realises that I lied to him. Or, even worse, what if Orlanda wakes up and this guy has already taken me somewhere. I don’t want to ditch Orlanda, because I actually really like her, “Follow me. There’s a safe place about a mile east in the cave,” he said. Damn it, I thought to myself. I can’t just leave Orlanda, “Well, why don’t we just camp out where that cage was. Now that the demonic cage thing is gone, it looks pretty safe. I think we can-“ I got cut off.
“Hello?! Where’d you go,” Orlanda yelled, followed by a yawn.
“I’m over here!” I said, followed by a sigh.
Well, now it’s pretty obvious that the new guy knows I was lying, and I’m not even sure if I trust him yet. Well, let’s hope he’s not a serial killer.
CHAPTER 7
“Who said that?” the man said.
“Oh, that’s Orlanda.”
“I thought you said you were alone,” he said sternly.
“Uh… uh-“ I stuttered.
“It’s alright, I understand. You were just making sure you could trust me. That’s all.” Wow, it’s like he can read minds, I thought to myself, ”Who’s that?” Orlanda asked me as she skipped down the ravine towards us.
“Oh, that’s… umm…”
“Chris,” the man intervened, “My name’s Chris.”
“Nice to meet you, Chris. My name’s Orlanda,” she said with a smile as she shook the man’s hand.
“Nice to meet you too.”
Orlanda and I brought Chris up to the cave that we stayed in. There was only one entrance, but I gathered some stone and blocked it off. Orlanda was sitting on the ground behind me, sharpening her sword on a piece of stone. She managed to get the sword out of the zombie’s head while we were walking up to the cave. It left a mark in the wall, indicating where the sword was. It was quite deep, like 5 inches at least. It showed that Orlanda had some true strength, “So, we just gonna sleep on some dirt over night?” Chris asked.
“Most likely,” I replied.
There was a patch of dirt near the entrance of the cave, as well as a slightly bigger one around the first corner on the right. Chris took the one near the entrance. Me and Orlanda shared the big patch of dirt around the corner. Me and Orlanda placed our weapons up against the wall. I’m pretty sure Chris slept with the brick. I’m not really sure though. Orlanda placed the golden sword on its handle and the tip was leaning against the stone wall. I just jabbed my pickaxe into the wall, where it hung like a painting. I turned around to make my way to the “bed”.
Orlanda was there. Not at the bed, but right there in front of me. Before I could even comprehend her presence, she wrapped her arms around me and kissed me.
It was great, and it was my first time kissing a girl too. While we kissed, she kind of pushed my back against the stone wall. The pickaxe poked my right in the spine. It was somewhat painful. I think my back was bleeding, but I wouldn't let that ruin this incredible moment. I never knew that I when I finally kissed a girl, I would also get stabbed in the back by a pickaxe. But aside, from that… It was fantastic.
After our 10 seconds of kissing, we went over to the dirt patch and lay down. The dirt was cold and uncomfortable, but we were still both smiling. She snuggled up against me, and we fell asleep within minutes.

“Oh, that’s Orlanda.”
“I thought you said you were alone,” he said sternly.
“Uh… uh-“ I stuttered.
“It’s alright, I understand. You were just making sure you could trust me. That’s all.”
Wow, it’s like he can read minds, I thought to myself, ”Who’s that?” Orlanda asked me as she skipped down the ravine towards us.
