When Minecraftia was first created, there were two beings who watched over it constantly. One was Notch, the guardian of the Overworld. He could summon lightning and wielded a sword made from pure diamond. He defended Minecraftia with his own life, never hesitating for any reason to keep his world alive. And then there was his brother, Herobrine. Herobrine was a lesser deity in Minecraftia's lore, but he was still very much a formidable foe. He kept an eye on the other dimensions known as the Nether and the End, wielding a diamond pickaxe that was sharpened to a point, enough to slice deep with a simple *****. He also created beings to safeguard those worlds and the humans who inhabited the Overworld. These creatures- some living, some undead- were summoned into the world every night to watch for and deal with potential threats that were too trivial for Notch and Herobrine.
But then....
He came.
The Wither. A monstrous creature, and the brother of Cthulhu, that ancient beast of Eldritch power. Wherever the Wither ventured, death followed. Trees died. Flowers wilted. Grass browned. Simply his being in a location caused it to suffer. And he had found Minecraftia.
He attacked it with all his might. Armies of humans, creepers, and more gathered to fight him and were subsequently destroyed, leaving very few survivors. Herobrine and Notch stepped in to assist and battled the Wither.
The ensuing fight was total chaos. Mountains cracked. Oceans split. Caverns caved in. But after a year-long battle, and the unfortunate deaths of countless innocents, the three-headed monstrosity was beaten. He was split apart by the brothers. His body became Soul Sand and his heads became Wither Skeletons, lesser incarnations of his insane power. These components were hurled into the Nether, and the Blazes set to guard the jail cells that the Wither Skeletons were held in.
But in the battle, the Wither had struck a blow on Herobrine, and he was slowly dying. Herobrine grew fearful, for he knew that if he died to this degenerative poison, the Wither's spirit would possess his empty corpse. So he told Notch, while on his death bed, that he was sorry for everything that was about to happen.
Upon the death of Herobrine, his body was infested by the Wither's soul. But said spirit was broken and incomplete from the separation of his body into many parts, and he was no more than an animal. He vanished completely. Without the true Herobrine to maintain their peaceful nature, the once-protective nighttime creatures, Nether monsters, and Enderman are now at war with humanity.
And after all this time, it remains uncertain whether Herobrine still exists or not.
The Wither can be summoned back, it's true; but what is summoned is an inferior clone, something that a skilled human warrior could easily destroy. The Wither may never fully recover, but to this day, Notch still believes he could've saved his brother.
