Welcome, my friends, to the Ravine.
After other unsuccessful projects (Really just project) I'm making a new, horror fanfic about just one adventurer and his friends who find an insanely large ravine and get lost dwelling within its eternal depths.
Currently only the prologue is complete. It's __ pages. Right now, if you do read it, I'm begging you to answer the poll or write a review. (Poll's not up yet, I wrote it all, it took me about 20 minutes, and the page didn't refresh properly and well… It's lost. Just wait until tomorrow.) It sounds odd, but just taking a few seconds would be really nice. I've been determined to make a fresher start and it's you as people who will help.
So, what are you waiting for? Welcome to the world of the ravine...
The Ravine Prologue: Reflection
I never really knew about the Ravine until yesterday.
I didn’t expect my world to be turned upside down when we discovered its infinite capabilities and caches of evil monsters.
But then again, we’re hopeless now. John, Newman, and Terrence - They’re all dead. And I was the one who killed them.
Because of me we found the ravine. Because of me we decided to go down and explore some caves. Because of me we got lost. Because of me... Well, I don’t wish to finish the sentence. It’s just so hard to remember.
And here I am now, what I presume to be seconds away from death at the hands of something I can’t really identify. Perhaps some new demonic creature the townspeople have never seen. I’d be a discoverer.
Too bad I would never get to live to tell the town about it.
I remembered when this all started a day ago: I was just hiking along the woods, looking for large trees to harvest apples from. Our family’s wheat farm had taken a deadly toll from a zombie infestation only a few months ago. Since then, we’ve been living off the land - grabbing what we can to feed our poor family. “There’s always potential in the wild, son,” Is what my mom used to say. She died a month ago after she went out do kill a chicken and was killed by a creeper.
I miss my mother. It’s illogical for somebody to not miss their mother, unless they’re matricidal.
Then again, I’m rambling. I’m meaning to talk about the story.
I was harvesting apples from the treetops when I heard the sound of molten lava. Bubbling underneath my feet, I figured it was some fort of unreal underground deposit.
After that, I heard an odd hissing noise behind me. Turning around, I didn’t see any mobs. I saw just plain forest all 360 degrees around my head.
But there certainly was an explosion. As I sat there, puzzled, the ground began to crack beneath my feet before a large explosion sent me flying through the treetops.
I flew a few meters and got stuck on an old tree branch. I jumped off, carefully landing on my feet, to check on what was going on. Why was there a humongous explosion not a few yards away?
Closing near the blast zone, I saw something mind-boggling.
The massive explosion must have come from some sort of TNT source. Below the ground was a massive ravine, filled with junctional caves and even lit areas below me. I didn’t know if somebody was here before. All I knew was this was gold.
Literally. I could see all sorts of precious materials embedded in the walls. diamonds, gold, emeralds, all sorts of wonderful things lined the solid stone.
I thought to myself about the kind of money we could earn from the ravine. If me and my friends were to mine the contents of this ravine, me and our town could be rich. We would be able to survive and prosper. To never be hungry, to never be sad.
It was too great a truth to conceal. So, I headed back to the village. Passing through the trees and hilly terrain I managed to finally find me back to the wooden huts of Alukla.
Ah yes, the village of Alukla. A small farming village sitting on the southernmost coast of the island that we live on. We don’t usually fish although the water south of us is fresh, and we are more of a foolish kind of people.
I should stop analyzing our people though.
I went over to John’s house - a rather large, L-shaped building made of stone and wood. Knocking on the door, John answered quickly.
“What’s happening?” John asked as he invited me off of his step and info his home.
“I’ve found something. Something big,” I said. “I’ll grab Newman and Terrence. This will change our lives forever.”
Well, You've bested the prologue. Here's chapter 1:
The Journey Down
After running tirelessly from house to house and grouping me and my friends together, we sat down by an abandoned farm whilst I briefed them on what I had found.
“This may sound weird, but I’ve found an underground chasm not far from here,” I explained. “It’s filled with diamonds, gold, and whatever else we’d need to keep us and our families in the good life for years. I think we should harvest its resources and become heroes.”
“But what would we bring? And how would we be allowed? We’re just kids,” Replied Terrence, clearly grieved about the situation.
“Simple,” I said as I began describing my plan on how to sneak away. “We need to harvest wood from the forest. At night, I’ll loot some of my father’s iron pickaxes and we’ll get out of here.”
“It sounds like a plan,” Said John, making himself comfortable on a pile of dead wheat which remained in a crumpled pile in the middle of the field. “But still, isn’t it dangerous?”
“No, it wouldn’t kill us or anything,” I replied, assured that we would be safe.
It wouldn’t take a genius to realize how horrible wrong I was and how my thoughts caused the terrible end of my three best friends.
I just realized I haven’t introduced myself yet. My name is Barnik Ivlasky. I’m a bit of a non-native of Alukla - Moved in from an icy metropolis up north. We decided to move when there was a massive war between us and the endermen.
It was a beautiful northern town - they called it Sentwali, I believe. Luckily me and my father left just before it allegedly was pulled into the void, seven long years ago. I didn’t have much cognitive abilities back then - I don’t have much memory of those days long ago. I just try to move on from then. My father said I had a sister who was killed there. Her name was Tabitha. To this day, if he is true, I wish I knew her.
Again, I’m reminiscing too much here. I’m supposed to be telling the story.
That night, we snuck out of our houses and met up the same location as before. I had also collected some string - I figured we could throw it down the cave to reach the bottom.
We slowly crept out of the bounds of the village and continued on through the forest for a good couple minutes.
“Are you sure this is the right way?” Said Newman, who had been quite quiet since. Newman was a smart but very shy fellow, who went by his last name. His real name? Keith. He hated everything about that name. It seemed so ugly to him - It felt like a name of a fool to him.
“I’m positive,” I said, replying to his comment. “We’re probably about 2 minutes away.”
Surely enough, after 2 minutes of long trekking, we finally reached the location. Vines, now with access to new places, crawled down the wall. Several burn spots could be noticed where the large lava stream would spark and heat the green lichen, causing it to slowly dissolve before it and all the vines below it would crumple to the ground.
Still, as good news, gems littered the floor with exquisite patterns and sparkled as the moon’s light cast off their beautiful forms. Etched into the rocks were some noticeable patterns - the stone may have been carved by ancestors long ago - today? It might be worth more than some of the gems in this cave.
“Listen guys, I’m going to lower the string down to the bottom, and you guys are going to climb down it. I’ll follow. We grab anything valuable and run out. Got it?” I asked.
“Got it,” The three chorused. I hooked the string up to a tree and the three slid down the rope steadily. I followed behind, as stated, and slowly my feet made contact with the cold stone below.
Immediately we got to work. We tore up the walls, the floor, and anything else that we could find. We searched little caves and crannies, In water pools and anywhere we thought we saw something shiny or different.
In about half an hour we had accumulated a massive amount of gems. Our bags were filled with glistening diamonds, emeralds, and a wide variety of beautiful minerals.
“How are we supposed to get back up?” Said Terrence. “We’re too heavy, aren’t we?”
“What a fool would think, Terrence,” I replied. “But I wrapped enough string around the tree to support our upwards journey.
I was expecting to be able to climb the string, even with heavy bags. But what I wasn’t expecting was the catastrophe that occurred next - It was the seeds of demise planted in the soil of horror, if you understand my metaphors.
The lava, still crisp and hot, sparked and caught fire to the string. Me and the other three stared helplessly as the fire spread quickly through the thin twine, splitting it in two and preventing our chances of escape.
“Wait!” Said Newman. “We can use the vines to get back up to the top!”
Although smart Newman was, he didn’t notice all the vines were out of our reach.
He also failed to notice an evil creature sneak up behind him.
“Newman!” I screamed to grab his attention, but it was too late. The same cruel beast that brought my mother’s demise exploded behind Newman, dropping him into a small two by two hole in the stone, which lead to a huge cavern below us.
A cavern in which the floor was made almost entirely of lava.
We beckoned for Newman to hold on, but he was struggling intensely. His hands were slowly losing their grip as his stress built up more and more and the lava below him caused his body to heat up rapidly.
“Wait!” Said Newman. “Let me drop. I see a pool of water near here!”
“Are you sure you actually see a pool of water?” I asked, questioning his sanity as not any of us could spot any water at all in the cave.
“Yes, yes, swing me in this direction,” He said, slowly directing his body north and propelling himself forwards and backwards. He looked like a child on the swings, until he counted us down to let go and we flung him across the cave.
“Yahoo!” Yelled Newman from down below. “This is awesome!” His comments were assured by a resounding splash below.
Following this, I dug a larger hole and we all, one by one, long-jumped into the cave below. I realized at the time how stupid this was since we were trying to escape - But if we couldn’t go up, there’s always opportunities to go deeper.
These were the most fun thoughts of my life as I let out a loud shout and flung myself into the treacherous depths below.
Hey there, eager fans!

Sweet! Sounds good my friend! I'm looking forward to it!
Chapter 1 was awesome! I love how you made it seem like you were going to kill Newman in that chapter, but then didn't actually do it. Very nice suspense, I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time they were in the ravine.
