H.B. warned me. He said it was dangerous to play those "realistic games." He couldn't stand them and he worried about me, just like any brother should. I'm so glad he hung on til the end though. When I got sucked in, he didn't give up on me. And when he finally got me out, there was no "I told you so." H.B. was the best brother I could ever have.
But that game. It was so much like real life but the things looked different. Things were round and much harder to do. Real life was much simpler. But the difficulty, it was addicting. It was such a challenge to live life as these creatures. Whoever made the game created this world so much like ours but added so much detail, almost too much. I was failing in my save file. My character had lost his job, I ruined his chance to continue to survive. But I didn't quit the game. I kept going, I don't know why. I guess I just wanted to see it end. I had the mindset to run this character into the ground or somehow miraculously get him back up and going.
He was a lot like me, I made sure of that when I made him. He had an unusually wide range of movement, not possible in real life. But the virtual reality gaming system I used made it work. The creator of the game even created a minigame based on real life inside the game. It was so cool, I could play some other race, playing a virtual me. I quite enjoyed it. But there was a warning I never listened to. If you stayed in the game too long, adverse effects would ensue. So there was a series of notes you had to make to remind you it was fantasy. It was only when I saw those while playing the minigame that H.B. was able to save me.
I was sucked in the game. Everything was so realistic but yet it wasn't. I enjoyed it much more than real life. I was on there almost all the time. It was unhealthy, I subconsciously knew but I always shook it away. I really got into playing the minigame. Thank the deities I did because it's what ended up saving me.
I had seen some user content created based on the minigame that included this character. I became curious about who this was and began to study him through the user created content in this virtual world. Only by this time, I didn't know just how fake it was. I came upon an entry that described him as a glitch in the game, not really real. He would stalk you, attack you, trap you and worse. It was like Slenderman only you didn't have to look him in the face first. There was an entry on the page, that seemed unusual. It read as follows, "It has been reported that some victims of torture, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being tortured. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP."
It freaked me out as I read it. I could hear it from then on out, "Wake up." "Wake up!" "Will you please just wake up!" It freaked me out and as I played the minigame more and more, I started to freak out about the character, my imagination ran wild and as I walked the home of my character, I would see the character appear out of nowhere, grabbing for me. It scared me nearly to death. Normally a legend like this just went away after a few days but that note went through my head over and over again along with the character attacking me.
Then my imagination went into overdrive, "What if this isn't real?" I shook my head. How could it not be real? I could see myself in clear detail, everyone around me lived as their own and there was no cookie cutter people who acted the same as others. So I kept living on as this person. Until one night, when I went to sleep and had a dream. I was in the minigame and the character came to attack me. I pulled out my blade, ready to defend, but when he reached me, he just stopped. His arm went up and right after, so did my blade. When he saw it, he flinched back and the phrase "Wake up." ran through my mind once more. Suddenly, he disappeared and I woke back up. I looked around and was still in the world that seemed so real. There was nothing that seemed out of place in the least. So I rolled over and went back to sleep until morning.
The next day, I walked around outside, with the visions freaking me out as they appeared. It had to be something otherwise it wouldn't persist. Finally, I gave in and just ignored it. I stopped playing the minigame for a while and went back to getting my character back up and living. It had been a few days and the visions had lessened. It was less of a trouble as time went on until two weeks later.
I was walking home when I tripped and fell. I went head first into the ground and was knocked out. As I lay there unconscious, I saw a vision. This time it was of me in the minigame, walking around and living as another character and I saw the hostile person again. Except this time, he was with the "creator" of the minigame. They were hunting in the woods together. They seemed close and for a moment my heart was warmed. Then the hostile spotted me, glaring with his bright pale eyes. Kind of a, "Stay away," look mixed with desperation. Like he was living a happy moment.
He looked back to the other guy and laughed, disappearing ahead in the woods. The other guy called out for him and just shook his head. A few moments later, he stopped. He looked around and then towards me, but not quite. I looked to my left where he was staring and saw a large wild pig. He drew his bow and aimed for the pig. I heard rustling and then a twang. In one split second, the hostile had went to tackle the pig and the arrow stuck in his neck, almost all the way through it. The other guy ran, screaming, "Brother, NO!!!" The hostile didn't respond.
I backed away, unable to pull my eyes from the sight. The brother held the hostile in his arms crying and suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and there was the hostile, staring me in the eyes. It jarred me to the bone. And then I heard the phrase again, "Wake up." "PLEASE! Wake up!" It finally hit me, I shook my head violently, until suddenly my eyes opened to H.B. shaking me.
"BROTHER!!!" I cried. "Oh Herobrine, I couldn't believe it. I'm so sorry my brother, I'm so sorry." I really couldn't. I had ignored the game's warning and was sucked in. Never again. I threw the VR system against the wall, breaking it, holding my brother in my arms once more, alive in the real world. Although it was more block-like than the game's world, it was still real. H.B. saved me. I'm so glad to have a brother like him.
