“I need a grenade over here!” shouted Steve as he was being pinned down by enemy fire. He was out of ammo, and the bullet wound in his leg prevented him from moving. He looked over the chipped away remnants of the concrete barrier he once called cover, only to see a small, slim black cartridge flying between the buildings of the narrow, dimly lit rundown urban alleyway. It only took him milliseconds to figure out what it was. “Concussion grenade!” he screamed. Everything went white.
Steve woke up, gasping for air. His head was spinning and he cursed under his breath. He was about to get up when he realized he wasn’t laying on the hard gravely surface of the rundown alleyway anymore. “Sand?” he asked. He realized he had just had another flashback. They had been happening ever since he was hit with that concussion grenade. But that was when he was 24, Steve was 45 now.
The disoriented, confused, exhausted Steve attempted to stand. When he got on his feet, he wobbled and swerved like a drunk. When he steadied out and realized he was thirsty. To his right, there were trees, to his left, a pond of water, which was sparkling from the sunlight. In front of him was a vast sea. Water as far as the eye could see. The sun and the ocean met as if they were one. He was facing east, its must’ve been morning. He moved to the pond of water and fell to his knees. He looked at his face. What Steve saw was a depressed wrinkle-faced old war veteran with short brown hair and a beard across his face. He looked out over the stretch of water and saw the world upside down. A strange parallel dimension which can be seen, but if touched, the world distorts. He plunged his face in the water and drank until he was about to vomit. Steve’s stomach growled. There was no time to figure out what happened or how he got here, he was getting hungry.
Several hours passed of Steve thinking. He was checking his surroundings to get an idea of his location when he noticed how beautiful the area was, there was no sign of civilization or humans in sight. But what he did see was animals. “Thank you god.” he said. For the first time in a long while he noticed and appreciated the environment around him. He saw trees, with apples ripe and ready for the picking hanging off of the deep green leaves. He saw hills, with an abundance of tall, long grass, along with sheep, cows, pigs, chickens, and even squid. The first thing he did was walk over to the apple tree. He looked up into the leaves where he saw bright rays of sunlight seeping through them. They warmed his face and he smiled. He picked a perfectly ripened bright red apple and took a bite out of it as he sat against the tree trunk. He noticed something in his right pocket. He reached in and pulled out a handmade dark brown cigar. “I’ll save this for later.” He said. Steve took another bite out of the apple and looked up, the sun was setting. He cursed under his breath. “I need a shelter, it’s getting dark.
