Chapter 1
The First Night
Emily picked up her pencil in the soft candle-lit room and began to write:
Dear Diary,
I missed you so much! I have so much exciting stories to tell you! But, let me begin from the start.
I opened my eyes on a sandy beach, the sun was rising and I had just spawned on my newly-created single-player world. Oh, boy was I excited! I had never played on a single-player world before. All of my friends from the other worlds kept telling me to try it out. I was always very paranoid about the fact of surviving alone by myself, so many scary mobs! But I convinced myself today was the day I begin my journey of independence. I sat up and brushed the sand remaining on my jeans. I turned around and began to survey my surroundings. To my left was a jungle, to my right, a forest. I decided that the forest would be less of a hassle to collect wood; therefore I began my journey in the forest. I walked up the closest tree and… well I didn’t really have a complete thought there. I had always been given an axe from my fellow mates to chop down these trees. I had seen someone before use their fists, but he was a burly strong male. I was only a weak female who had barely any knowledge of independent survival. I decided to try anyway. I gathered up all my might, and swung a swift uppercut punch to the tall tree. Sure enough, the tree came down. I looked at my fist. “No scratches or bruises?” I said to myself curiously. I noticed the wood had crumbled into small bundles that I could easily carry. I took my empty backpack off my back and put five wood bundles into the pack. I then proceeded to put the backpack back on my back. I took one wood bundle out of my pack. I looked at it cautiously. The wood bundle then turned into four wooden plank pieces suddenly. This alarmed me, causing me to jump and drop the four planks. I then realized, I could somehow turn items into other items, I guess. I picked up the planks and went into deep thought. My mind’s eye created four squares for myself. I cautiously placed the four planks in each square using my imagination. Suddenly, a workbench appeared in my hands. It was very small, but when I placed it on the ground it transformed into a large work area, a three by tree grid was placed in the center. Saws and hammers were placed around the sides of the workbench. She put her hands on top of the workbench and rubbed her fingers over the crevices on the workbench. I wondered if I… no, that was a terrible idea. I still didn’t have a clear thought. But, I tried anyway. I swung another swift punch at the workbench. Surprisingly, the workbench turned back into its small original form. I picked up the workbench and placed it back into my backpack. I looked up at the sky, it seemed only half an hour has passed in the time I spent on this land. I started to walk towards other trees and sent another swift punch at the tree. The wood, again, dropped to the ground in bundles of four, five, or sometimes six. Two hours had gone by, and I had collected a full sixty-four set of the wood bundles. I looked again at the sky, it was almost midday. I decided to put this crafting bench to work and figure out all the features that came with this item. I placed the workbench underneath a large tree, too big to cut down with only my hands, and placed my hands on the bench, along with some bundles of wood. I placed a bundle down in the center. Four wooden plank pieces appeared in the place where the bundle used to be. I completed that task multiple times, until I had four sets of sixty-four plank pieces. I put one plank into my hand and placed it on the ground. Instantly, the planks had grown and taken the shape of a large square. I decided to take one stack of my wooden planks and place them around my work bench forming the shape of a house. That took up a good hour or so. It was about half past noon now, and I was getting tired. I sat down on the soft grass bed next to my workbench. I grabbed the edge of my striped green and black shirt and wiped the sweat off my forehead. I took the backpack off of my back and placed it on the ground. Boy was I tired. I had spent half the day with non-stop work in the hot sun. If only there was some… I felt drops dropping on my forehead. Rain, I concluded the thought. The rain began to pour harder. I could have sworn I heard thunder and saw lightning flash in the distance. I decided quickly to grab the remaining blocks of wood and place them above my head. I hoped this would work, and surprisingly, it did. The planks stuck to the other planks on the wall, shielding me from the rain. I placed plank after plank until I had a complete roof. There was still an opening on the front side. I knew I needed a door there to keep the mobs away. I turned around and looked at my workbench. I had no idea how to make a wooden door. But, I did notice a clean new book strapped to the side of the table. I picked up the book and opened to the table of contents. So many things were written here! There were levers, swords, bricks, every item in the world of minecraftia. I searched through the “d” section until I found wooden door. I flipped to the page number labeled wooden door. There were six wooden planks lined up in two rows of three. I closed the new book and placed it back into its leather holster. I took six wooden planks and lined them up exactly the way the book’s description said. Instantly, a small wooden door appeared on the table. I picked up the small door and placed it on the ground in front of the opening in my house. Instantly, the door became two blocks high and formed itself into a working door, latches and all! I looked around my new house, thunder rumbling still outside. I blinked and noticed again, it was extremely dark inside this house. The only light that was coming inside was the light from the outside world through the door window. I was going to need a light source to be able to see in the nighttime. I tried to remember different light sources I could use. I believe there was one called a torch, and another called glowstone. Glowstone was very hard to achieve, from what I could remember. Glowstone was only obtained from the nether, and the nether was serious business. Even your friends wouldn’t let you go into the nether with creative enabled. They always told me I wasn’t good enough and the nether would surely pummel me to dust. I had heeded their warning and never ventured to the nether. I was still very curious of what the nether looked like, though. From what the books had told me, a dark hellish world filled with devilish creatures and structures. I loved to read, also. When my friends were out exploring I would sit in the house they had built and read all the books in their enchantment library. I had a wide knowledge of minecraft back then, for some reason now I could not remember a thing. Then there was the torch. I had forgotten how to make those as well. I grabbed the book once again from the holster and opened it. The table of contents again greeted me. I flipped to the page labeled torch. The recipe was one stick and a piece of coal or charcoal. I could easily remember that charcoal was made from wood inside a furnace. I had made plenty of charcoal for my friends. Friends… that was all I could think of then. My old friends and how they had banished me from ever playing on their world again for a misunderstanding they had thought of. But, them aside, I had to find some coal before it struck night. The mobs would come after me. Deadly creepers, nasty skeletons, they were all very dangerous and could easily end my time in this world. I went to the page labeled coal and examined a small diagram on how to achieve coal. I needed a pickaxe. I then went to the page labeled pickaxe. The page explained how there were multiple types of pickaxes and which block could be broken by which. I noticed obsidian could only be mined by a diamond pickaxe. I was curious what obsidian was. I wanted to search up obsidian, but I couldn’t get side-tracked now. I had easily wasted an hour or two reading meaningless pages and reminiscing on the old days. I scanned the list once more and found coal ore. It seemed I only needed a wooden pickaxe to mine this ore. Good! I had all the materials to make a wooden pickaxe it seemed. I placed the book back in its lovely leather holster and opened my backpack. I pulled out five planks. Three of the planks for the pick part, and the other two for the sticks. I placed two planks vertical of each other in on the grid. Instantly, four sticks appeared where the planks once were. Oh, how I love progress. I took two sticks, lined them vertically and placed three planks in a row above them. With no time to spare, a wooden pickaxe was formed on the center of the table. I picked up the pickaxe and tried to get used to the feel of it. I was tossing it back and forth, swinging it around a few times, just to get a good grip of it. I turned around and opened the door. I peeked outside the door and looked at the sky. It seemed the rain had stopped. But it was quickly nearing nighttime on the first day in this new world. I walked outside and took surveillance of any exposed ores in my sight. Bingo! I saw a luscious coal ore vein sticking out in the side of a nearby mountain. I quickly peeked for any sight of mobs and ran towards the coal. I reached the coal ore and readied my pickaxe. I stared at the ore for a second, wondering which way to hit it would be the fastest. I proceeded with just hacking at it and hoping for the best. Luckily, after a few hacks at the coal with the pickaxe, a small bit of coal was placed on the ground in front of me. I picked up the small round coal piece and placed it in my backpack. I began to hack away at the rest of my coal while I was at it. This chore took me around forty-five minutes to complete, but I walked away with a good haul of coal. I started to walk back to my house. Then I stopped, I had no idea where I was going! I had lost track of where I had run from. Looking back up at the sky, I noticed it was only an hour away from becoming nighttime, when deadly mobs would begin t
o spawn. I started to panic a little, wondering if I would make it back home in time. I suddenly remembered, the beach was facing north, and the forest east. If I walked north-eastern, I think I might be able to find my house. I began to walk towards the house, but that turned into a sprint soon after. It the night was crawling closer and closer. If only I could get some torches in time… It hit me. I stopped dead in my tracks. The sunset getting darker with every breath I took. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. The small two by two grid in my mind’s eye appeared again. I remembered only two slots were needed to make torches. I placed my remaining two sticks underneath two pieces of coal. I opened my eyes. A bundle of 8 unlit torches sat in my hand. I looked once again at the sky; the night was only mere minutes away. I looked down at my hands, filled with these torches. I noticed my house straight ahead in the distance. With no time to waste, I ran straight ahead for home. When I reached my shelter, the night was already beginning. I could already hear the hiss of the creepers and the growls from the zombies. I swiped a torch against the wood, setting a flame to it instantly. I quickly placed the torch on the outside of my home. I then opened my door and ran inside quickly, making sure the door is completely shut. I was almost out of breath, but I had to put up one last torch. I swiped a second torch against the walls and placed it next to the door. I immediately slumped to the ground. I was out of breath, and terribly hungry. I then realized with every grumble from my stomach I felt a small pain in my head. I felt like I was starving. I peeked out my door in any hopes of food nearby. Just my luck, there were no cows, pigs, or chickens in sight. There were only hideous mobs that looked like they wanted to rip off my limbs. I slumped back down to the grass floor. I was... so… tired… My eyes started to slowly droop as I sat in the small torch-lit house. I needed to stay alert for any mobs, though. I tried my hardest to stay awake. I told myself I could probably get away with an hour or two of sleep… I clumped up some grass, formed a pillow, and lay my head on the pile of grass. I slowly closed my eyes… and drifted to sleep…
