I know that I already have a novel in progress, but I decided to make another one. Enjoy.
Chapter 1: The Sound of Silence
It was quite a calm day in 1956 London. Three good friends - Markus, Tom and Andrea - were walking down to the library for a bit of studying. End of term exams started next week, after all.
"So, you think you're gonna do well?" Tom asked the other two.
"Well," Andrea replied, "I certainly hope so. This exam could shape the rest of our lives!"
"Oh, stop overreacting," Markus retorted. "We'll do fine." Very soon, the trio made it to the library.
It was a busy day for the librarian indeed. People packed the aisles of books, reaching up to the ceiling. There was only one area that was empty: the History section. In other words, the section that the three needed to go to.
"Wow, good thing the History section is empty," Andrea commented.
"Hang on," Markus said. A pause and he continued with, "Why is it empty?"
"Beats me." Tom made this comment, once again showing his complete disregard for clear warnings. "We need to get studying." Tom walked up to the aisle of boring literature known as 'history', followed reluctantly by Markus and Andrea.
Tom pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. "Well, this is the book," he said, pointing to a small black book. He pulled it off of the shelf along with two others, handing one to each of his colleagues.
Markus opened the book and flipped through the pages, expecting to see something about history. Instead, he saw notes. Each of these notes had a date on the top and the same name on the bottom: Notch. The only 3 notes that could be read because of the rest being blotted out read:
January 27, 1935
I have done it. Finally, the portal is complete. It will only be a matter of time before I activate it. I've hidden the portal within a physical object. Anyone who touches it will be set to teleport within minutes.
- Notch
January 28, 1935
I am fearful for the well-being of the inhabitants of this world. One of those vile creatures has stolen the portal objects and taken them away somewhere. If my theories were correct, then it has already teleported with them to wherever they lead. It may take some time to find them again.
- Notch
January 29, 1935
I am afraid the teleporters are gone for good. I will make new ones and put them in something else. Something easier to keep track of.
- Notch
"Well, how strange!" Andrea began to walk back towards the door. "Take them home with you and look them over again. Maybe you'll find something." The three of them left to go back to their homes and study the books.
Chapter 2: Links to Links
Late that night, you could see a dim lamp through the window of a small, insignificant house in London. Markus flipped through the book over and over to no result. The pages rustled from front to back and front again. When the clock struck 9 that night, he didn't feel tired at all, but he still went to bed. It was as if some unknown force willed him to. As he drifted off, he remembered a particular poem from Shakespere's As You Like It (they had done a lot of Shakespere in school). After whispering it twice, he managed to fall asleep.
He had a strange dream that night.
Markus.
Markus! The book, have you read it?
You took it off the shelf. Yes, you did.
Check the book again.
At the last sentence, Markus woke up with a start. He looked over at the desk with the black book. Maybe something more was there? No, that would be impossible. And yet, Markus was still inclined to climb out of his bed and examine the book again. The voice ringed in his head again, but more quietly.
Back and forth.
Listening to what he thought was his conscience, he opened the book and flipped back and forth through it. After 3 goes, some text near the back became visible. Markus looked at it intently, despite the fact that his mother was extremely superstitious and would possibly faint upon seeing this impossible book. The new entry read:
May 24, 1956
There is no other explanation. Someone, or some persons, have found the books. But it doesn't make sense! My computers have been up 24/7, but not a trace of the books was found. Somehow, the must have either been found and used, or teleported on their own. I must get to the bottom of this, and fast.
- Notch
There were two things worrying Markus about this entry. Firstly, the mention of books and the possibility of them having had teleported on their own. He thought that, from the previous entries, that those books mentioned were the new 'teleporting objects'. He also wondered if the books he and his two friends had were them. His next concern was that the date on the entry was the same date as that day. Markus just couldn't make head or foot of it. Determined to find the answer, he decided to sleep on it. Had he stayed awake, this story would not have been written...
Part I
The Journey
Chapter 3: Surviving
(NOTE: All of the time spent in the 'other world' is written from Markus' perspective.)
I woke up very slowly, but got up with a start when I saw where I was. This was not 1950s London - no - I woke up in a forest. It was... the book.
I slowly got up and found that everything was different. This definitely wasn't London anymore, and it probably wasn't Earth either. Wherever this place was, everything in it was made of cubes. All cubes - exactly a metre on each side, too. This is too weird...
Something else occurs to me. If the book caused this, then my friends would be in the same world. I punch one of the trees in frustration. How am I going to find them? I don't know what dangers are here; what if they run into one? And how will we get back home? The situation seemed hopeless. But then I looked at the tree. There was a crack in the middle of the block I punched. But I didn't punch it that hard, did I? I gave it a light tap to test this, and sure enough, more cracks began to appear. I punched that block over and over until, after being covered with cracks, it just disappeared. Where the block was lay a small, floating version of the block, which I was able to pick up. I eventually figured out how to craft what looked like a workbench.
At that moment, there was a glimmer of hope. I knew, even if I never got out of that world, I would be able to survive in it. This world of mining and crafting. Minecraft.
3 Years Later...
I stared out at the sunset atop my mountain. A peaceful sight, but also a sign to flee from the dangers that await at night. But something strange has been happening these past few weeks. A new creature spawns at night, killing the other monsters. Then it stares into my window until the sunrise, when it disappears. I wouldn't be taking my chances with that any time soon
.I go inside and close the iron doors. The zombies have gotten stronger; wooden doors are no longer enough to keep them at bay. I take a seat at my window and watch the strange creature go through it's regular routine. But, wait, something isn't right... There's something else out there. Or...Someone!
I ripped my diamond sword out of it's sheath and rushed outside to aid the victim. The creature was closing in fast, but I was quick enough. Just as it was about to strike, I managed to fire an arrow at it's heart... But it didn't hit. It bounced off like solid iron. It looked up from it's previous prey and targeted me.One big jump and he was already right in front of me.
He swung his arm down, but I sidestepped and grabbed the arm. I tried sawing at it with my sword, but it wasn't working. Nothing would penetrate. But I had an idea. Maybe, just maybe, it would work. I took out my pickaxe and struck it's arm. One blow and it was clean off. Not wanting to lose my diamond pick, I took out an iron one and threw it at it's head. The pick sailed clean through. It was done.
Who was this monster attacking? was the next question to find an answer to. I walked over to where the person was lying, probably unconscious. It was a girl, but not just any girl.
"Andrea?"

Wow, I haven't been here in a while. When I said 'chapter 2 was coming soon', I lost the internet while I was typing, and I was just never able to find the topic again afterwards. Well, now chapter 2 is up. I'd like to explain why these first two chapters are so short. Those chapters are meant to be short. Chapter 3 and onward should be longer.
C-c-combo breaker! Out of five posts, this is the FIRST ONE in this thread that was not made by you. I just wanted to disrupt the lines of identical avatars...
I'm interested to see how the mystery unfolds; it's neat how you started by developing the main characters in the real world instead of the game itself.
I'm interested to see how the mystery unfolds; it's neat how you started by developing the main characters in the real world instead of the game itself.
I often want to develop the main characters first before the story, but I am writing another story in a notebook - named Reality - where pretty much nothing will be explained to an extent of not really knowing anything, but still knowing what's currently happening. It's a weird idea I had at school one day, and I just started writing. I've only finished 2 paragraphs, though. I could show them, if you like.
Hey guys. I'm back, and not so 'better than ever'. Both stress and personal issues have been taking up my time and I now wish to release this turmoil in the art of literature. Another chapter is being written. The start of Part I: The Journey.
The formatting is broken. Great. Gotta fix it now.
EDIT: Fixed. I just need to say, admins, this isn't the first time this has happened. The paragraphs of the whole post just broke and they all merged into one wall of text. I don't know what causes this, but it needs to be fixed.
Just read Chapter 3! The story is looking great so far; I like how you introduced a new mob that seems to be made out of stone. Can't wait to see what it is, and how Andrea has been doing!
Well, I have a bombshell to drop now. I'm sure this may disappoint many, but I'm actually quite good at the style of writing I'm about to reveal. Yes, you were afraid it would happen, and it is going to. The will be a romance in this fanfic. Don't worry, it will still mostly be about what the story is actually about. It won't take up too much of our time. The reason I am doing this is because it opens up many possibilities for the storyline, which at this point needs some spicing up. Chapter 4 will come soon, but not today.
EDIT: Just though I should mention, Chapters 4, 5 and possibly 6, depending on how long it takes, will be our first peak in the story.
I realize this was completely dead, but I'm bringing it back anyway. Here we go, starting from chapter 4.
Chapter IV: Link to the Past
This was an amazing coincidence that I'd found Andrea, after all this time! In fact, it was such a huge coincidence, I didn't really believe it at first myself. I carried her inside and set her on a chair in front of the fireplace. Just then, I heard a voice; a voice I'd forgotten for 3 years.
Markus, you need the book again.
Have you forgotten where it is?
It is of great importance. Look at it now.
The last time I looked at the book, it was the cause of this whole problem. I now looked at it as my only hope of leaving this world. I went down into my basement, where stood a door; the biggest and thickest door I've ever made, and bigger than I'd ever seen in London. I used my sword in the special lock I'd made for the purpose, and pushed the heavy door only an inch. I made this room 2 years ago to store the book. Lined with obsidian and locked behind an iron wall of a door, it was built so that the book couldn't be damaged. I flipped the pages back and forth, as I did last time. Soon, I found the new entry around the middle of the book.
August 2, 1959
This is worse than I could have predicted! The quantum signature, the timing of it, everything points to the books! I'm afraid I've unleashed something terrible upon this world, something much worse than the simple creatures here before. The statues, large and magnificent, are recognizable! They are from my childhood; my church had these statues in the garden. But now they move and attack. I fear there has been a breach, and now objects are leaking between this world and Earth. I do not yet know the cause or the severity, but these creatures - these statues - are a problem for now. The villagers are being terrorized, and we've already had several casualties. I only hope I can find a solution soon.
- Notch
What I had gathered from this reading was that the books had disrupted something, something which separates the universes. If that's correct, then would that mean things are leaking both ways? Is Earth receiving objects from this world as well? I didn't have time to think much about it, because after the vault was locked and I went back upstairs, Andrea was awake. She heard me walking up the stairs, and turned to look. After she looked at me for a few seconds, the confusion in her face changed to sheer joy. "Markus!" She jumped out of the chair - it almost turned over into the fireplace - ran and hugged me. "Where were you? I've been looking everywhere for you!"
"I've been doing the same!" I responded. "It's so good to see you again! Is Tom with you?"
She shook her head slowly. "No, I still haven't found him. This place goes on forever; he could be anywhere." This news was disappointing, but I've already found one of my friends, so anything was possible.
In my time here, I did live by myself, but I build two other rooms, with the hopes of finding my friends. I showed Andrea to one and told her to get some rest. She wanted very badly to tell me all that happened, but with all that did happen, it would've been better to rest first. We both eventually went to sleep, despite the zombies' banging on the doors being louder than normal. If they started getting through iron I realized options for a new door would be limited.
You, come closer.
"Who are you? What am I hearing?"
In the corner, there is a glass sphere.
"Ok, I see you. What do you want?"
A long time ago, an evil wizard encased me in this sphere. I was a ruler of a vast kingdom, but I was undermined by this man.
"What do you want me to do?"
This sphere can only be opened by the touch of his kind. Until now, I thought he was the only one, but you are now here.
"His kind; what do you mean?
... Human kind. Touch the surface of the sphere. I will be released, and I will be able to seek my revenge and reclaim my kingdom.
The boy reluctantly went over and touched the sphere. A loud shattering sound was heard, and the sphere was in pieces. From it emerged a black cloud, which rose up into the sky.
Thank you for your assistance. For it, I will reward you. You may take part in my plan. You possess a quality which I need.
"What's that...?"
... A being.
The cloud spiraled into the air and compressed into a small black dot. The dot flew down at the boy and a huge flash of light occurred. The light turned to darkness slowly, losing it's brightness. As the light ran out, only the boy could be seen. When he turned around...
"AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!" I looked around my room quickly. I was still in my bed, and nothing unusual was there. "Oh, it was just a nightmare," I told myself. I looked out the window and saw that the sun was just rising, so it didn't make much sense to go back to sleep. I left my room and went to the kitchen to start cooking breakfast. Today would be a long day, after all.
