Over an empty, blocky, square world, an all-powerful man known as Markus observed, with a scratch of his beard, he came up with an idea. With haste, he created a man out of sand, and gave him the ability to craft anything with materials harvested or mined from above or beneath the surface of this world. The man was christened with the name, Steve. Steve awoke to a beautiful world filled with towering trees, behemoth-sized mountains rolling plains, and prospering wildlife. In his ear, he heard a whisper, “this world is not home to just you, find a shelter before dusk.”
“Before dusk,” Steve pondered, “why?”
“I have my reasons. Now,” Markus said in a sharp, yet still gentle voice. “Try gathering some wood from yonder forest of trees”
Steve ventured east into the vast green forest, where he found many, many trees greener than the earth itself, when Steve stopped. “How am I to gather the wood? I have no axe to chop the logs with.”
Markus remembered the skill he gave Steve and offered a suggestion, “Punch it”
“Punch…the….tree?”
“Yes,”
Steve took Markus’ strange advice and punched the tree, the tree suffered a small crack. “That didn’t do anything”
“Try it again” Markus reassured
So Steve continued to punch the tree, bits of bark flying everywhere, until the tree completely vanished, leaving nothing but a small pile of logs
“Good, Steve! Good!” Markus congratulated Steve for his excellent display of his talents
“The sun is going down soon Markus,”
“Yes, it is,”
Markus hastily taught Steve how to craft items, and made him a crafting board using the wood he cut. He walked Steve through the building of a house that suited his interests. He smelted some glass to make the windows, and used the wool from some of the sheep to make cloth, and used the cloth to sew new clothing and make a canvas to make beautiful paintings to decorate his home. Markus taught him how to make tools, Steve used cobblestone to craft a fine pickaxe, a sword, a shovel, a hoe, and an axe. “Now that you have everything you need to survive, I leave you to go your own way”
“Markus, you can’t leave me!”
“I cannot hold a hand that belongs to the owner of his own world, if I did, that world wouldn’t be his own. If you stay in this house, you will survive the night, this much I guarantee”
“But, those monsters...”
“Cannot breach your defenses, keep the windows and doors closed and you will do fine.”
Steve, alone and distraught, wondered how he would survive without the guidance of his creator, all he remembered from that night was the horrific sights he saw outside that window, and the terrifying, and somehow sad looking beast he saw loitering near his house.
He saw the beasts bickering. He laid his head down on the soft soil, and closed his eyes until exhaustion took him over, and he drifted away into sleep.
Many months passed, many things changed, Steve encountered many things on his travels, until he finally decided that he would settle down in a large cobblestone abode, twice as big as his old wooden shack he spent his first delusional, nervous night in. Today he proudly sports the same teal shirt and violet pants, over them he is clad in full iron armor, carrying a pickaxe of sparkling, near-unbreakable diamond, a sword either made of diamond, or iron, he had both, he was an efficient traveler.
One night, he wandered too far from home, he panicked as the sun went down below the horizon, after he pulled himself together, and he ran across the vast land to return home. When he finally saw the inviting glow of the torches he used for light, he saw a sight that equaled the feeling in disappointment. His home was swarming with monsters, grotesque beasts, the armless, four-legged, green, explosive, (literally) leafy Creeper, the undead flesh eating zombie, the crack shot, never-miss-his-mark archer skeleton, and the fearsome, leaping Spider.
The battle raged on for what seemed like forever, the dawn came, and the undead burst into flames! The spiders, now not possessed by the night, ran back to the caves. Steve stood back to admire the sunrise, when the unthinkable happened. Steve had let his guard down, then he heard the distinctive sound, the sound of a creeper preparing to explode “ssssssssss” a look of devastation appeared on Steve’s face, before he even had time to react, the creeper detonated, shattering his armor, and leaving him open to more attacks, he leaped up to his feet, drew his sword, one last creeper dashed toward him, with a mighty swing he slayed the explosive beast with one blow, and his dull sword shattered into a thousand pieces. After that, He never went outside at night again. One day Steve went spelunking to explore a cave he recently found, hours went by and by, and he came across a mossy cobblestone, he reached into his pack, and pulled out a pickaxe. He dug his way into the old dungeon, he found it was where somebody else once was, but the chest inside was still there. Upon opening the lonely chest, he found only one thing inside, a lonely journal with a name on it, “Dr. Leon Sysk” the first page was a biography, Sysk was a man of archeology, mineralogy, zoology,
“a very smart man, how did he become journal-less?” The last page of his journal however, looked to be a daring Endeavour, a door of some kind with phantom flames, and a man and a pig, strapped together. Instructions were left on that last page
“Step 1. Gather 14 pounds of obsidian, 28 recommended in case of emergency step 2. Use the obsidian to construct a frame 4 meters wide and 5 meters tall. Step 3. Add some sort of still-burning flame, then step back and watch the magic happen”
the journal itself looked to have quite some age. Steve gathered materials for several days “This door, this portal, I soon shall raise” Steve said triumphantly, fetching his pick from the chest’s lid and dashing off into the darkness of the cave.
“’gather 14 pounds of obsidian, 28 recommended in case of emergency’ seems easy enough” Steve muttered under his breath. He came across a lava spring, he was lucky that most of it was solidified into fresh obsidian.
“It’s the motherload!” Steve exclaimed, as if he hit a huge patch of diamond and gold. He started mining, and was surprised to find obsidian is the hardest material he has found to date, taking 45 seconds to mine a mere pound of it. Steve eventually emerged from the cave, carrying 28 pounds of obsidian in his pack.
“Next step, ‘use the obsidian to construct a frame 4 meters wide, 5 tall’ seems easy enough,”
Steve worked for about half an hour, when finally his frame was complete.
“Final step ‘add some sort of still burning flame to the frame’”
Steve grabbed a torch from the chest he had in his house (he was building indoors)
“Where’s this doctor, can I save him? Is he here in this place he writes about? Is he in the Nether?”
He held the torch up to the frame he had made,
“Let’s watch some magic happen”
He threw the torch into the empty frame, and just like that, the torch exploded, filling the frame with an eerie, purple fire. To Steve’s discomfort, there were whispers coming from the now activated portal, then he saw a horrific, white-as-snow face inside his portal.
“What the..?”
The face exited the portal and in a deep, raspy voice it spoke to Steve.
“This is not allowed, you are not allowed in the Nether. There will be unforeseen consequences”
The sun and moon started spiraling out of control in an endless sped up cycle of night and day
“Not allowed? I’ll be the judge of that! What the heck’s going on anyway? Look at the colors…..” Steve droned as if in a trance as the world’s colors morphed into a dreamlike state
“The ghost who walks among man shall not interfere; we shall not allow HIM to interfere”
The body supposedly made of pure evil, a mirror image of Steve, appeared before Steve, snapping him out of his trance.
“Oh crap,” slipped out of Steve’s mouth
“It was foretold, a lost Hero would gather Brine from the ocean. We cannot maintain our presence, it was foretold.” The demonic spirit shed blood red tears and started to wither back into the portal
“as we fade out into nothingness we cannot allow your future. We have delivered the warning”
The spirit’s voice pitch and speed rapidly increased as water started to leak from the portal, not before it being entered by the spirit.
“We will be waiting in the Nether as we fade out into nothingnesssssssss” There was an explosion, and Steve
awoke in his bed, his portal, no water, no spirit, still active by his bedside, where it was to begin with. All seemed well until Steve stood up and found a note on his crafting board “We shall be waiting”
Chapter 2
The Others
Steve dropped the note into his storage chest and shook the creepy message off. He looked to the portal, to his surprise it had grown cold, no more flame. His portal was dark, inactive. Steve fetched his axe and ventured off into the eastern forest. After chopping a few trees He prepared to set back off when he heard a voice, he heard grunts of effort, and something cracking. CRASH!! A tree had fallen, he ran in the direction of the noise. To his surprise, he saw a young woman about is age, furiously attacking the tree, then, with a roundhouse kick the tree fell. The girl gathered the logs that resulted and carried them away.
“Ez! Ez look!” She said excitedly,
“Very good job,” A beautiful woman in a white gown said to the girl “Now make them into planks to build your home”
“Yes Ez.”
“Wait,” Steve intervened “she doesn’t have to waste those, she can come home with me.” Steve offered
“Who’s he, Ez?” the girl said
“I’m not sure,” Ez said “Miner!”
“Hm?” Steve replied
“What is your name?”
“Steve, Creation of Markus “Notch” Persson” He stated
“Markus?” Ez remarked
“You know him?”
“Markus is my Husband,” she replied “Where is he now?
“I’m not sure, He left me in these very woods no more than a year ago, haven’t seen him since”
“Is that so?” Ez looked at the girl “Charlotte and I will be fine”
“Charlotte? That’s her name?
“Her name is not important to you now Miner. Go back to your place of residence, we may meet you later”
Steve walked back home feeling somewhat let down, he was upset that the only people he saw in a year, or at all, disliked him.
He walked up to his house and to his surprise, found a familiar face
“Markus!”
“Steve! How are you?”
“I am fine Markus, at least I’ve made it this far”
“Survived a year on your own, that’s good, anyway, I have come to offer help”
“Help?”
“Yes, isn’t that what you wanted?”
“You left me when I needed you most Markus, and now, when I don’t need you, you come back?”
“You don’t understand, there is more to this world than what you see”
Steve looked back curiously at his creator “go on”
“Did you happen to find any red dust while mining?”
“Yes actually,”
“Give it here.”
Steve obliged and handed Markus the satchel of red dust
“Watch,” Markus placed a lever on the ground, and sprinkled the dust from the lever to Steve’s door.
“Flip the switch Steve,”
Steve flipped the switch, and the dust started to glow, then Steve’s door flung open.
“See? Its Redstone, it acts as a way to remotely power things, you can make up some devilish monster traps no doubt!”
“Amazing, what else is there?”
“I……” Markus glanced in Steve’s window “I…Didn’t know you made a portal, how would you have known to make a portal?”
“This journal,” Steve said, handing it to Markus “I found it in a cave; it was written by a man named Sysk”
“Leon” Notch remembered, “Sysk was a friend of mine, I decided to make the world a clean slate, and create you, I really had no choice, Rebellion, people turning on me, I started anew, I needed a man, to save me from man.”
Steve looked at Markus, Markus looked at him.
“We should go inside” Steve said and let Markus in
“This is amazing compared to your old shack you started in, what happened to it anyway?”
“Heck if I know, I left it, it’s probably still there”
“Let’s go see” Markus and Steve wandered east back into the forest and to their surprise they saw the shack, it was covered with moss, and broken in many spots
“I doubt we will ever need this anymore,” Steve took a torch off of the old decrepit “I say let’s give it a proper burial”
Steve tossed the torch into the wooden house, and it burst into flames. As the Flames grew higher and higher, the night was lit up evermore.
“Oh this isn’t good Steve, we need to get away from this fire” Markus said with worry “This will bring the monsters in like bees to honey”
They hurried home just in time before the monsters took hold of the surrounding area. Markus took a breath “I forgot” he breathed heavily “how persistent and strong they were.”
“Yeah, and you’ve only had this land under your beard for…….ever”
“Anyway, since this seems like an ample time to do so, let’s activate your portal!”
“Markus no, I’m scared”
“Scared? You of all people, who survived a year on his own with savage beasts out to tan his hide at any given moment, is SCARED?”
“I saw something when I first turned it on, a face, it had tears in its eyes, then I saw something even worse”
“What did it look like?”
“It looked like me, only….” Steve gulped “Bleak white eyes”
“No…..no…….this cannot be” Markus stood up
“What cannot be?”
“Nothing, you needn’t worry, it’s me that I need to worry about”
“Wait wait, no, if I’m going to fight this thing I got to know what it is”
“There’s no fighting it Steve, I couldn’t be rid of it once, I can’t stop it again” Markus, his head propped up against his arm, turned back to Steve
“We’re in big trouble, anyway, lets activate that portal”
“Markus! I told you I don’t want to!”
“I assure you that nothing will happen,” Markus said and fetched a flint and steel from Steve’s chest where he kept his things. He walked over to the lifeless frame and rubbed the flint and steel together to create a flame inside the doorway. The flames exploded into the same shade of devilish purple. The same whispers filled Steve’s house with an eerie aura. “There we are, suit up Steve, my boy, we embark on the morn”
“To where exactly?”
“To the Nether, a realm of the most terrifying things you have ever imagined.”
“Greeeaaat.” Steve sighed
“No Steve, it’s really not that bad, just don’t bother the inhabitants and they won’t bother you.”
“What inhabitants?”
“You’ll see, You’ll see.”
Chapter 3
Tonight we mine in Hell!
Steve stared at the purplish flames, he still heard whispers and grunts of some terrifying beast from beyond. When the sun rose over the hills markus asked "Steve, are you ready?"
Steve nodded
"good, be sure you're amply prepeared because when we return, we cant be sure when we will be back"
Steve didn't say a word, and opened up a hidden door in the wall, Markus looked on with curiosity.
"Steve, what are you doing?"
"Follow me Father, i have something to show you"
Markus shot a strange glance at Steve, perhaps he was a little confused at him suddenly calling him his father, and not by his name. Steve walked down a flight of stairs that the door revealed. At last they reached the bottom, there was a large, dim room, with pillars of lava encased in glass on every side, large, buring torches atop cobblestone pillars, over the center of the room there was a large, glass circle, with pipes leading from the pillars to the center,at the end of the hall there was a steel door with 2 levers on either side of it.
"Now see Father, what the sweat of many days and many nights have gone into, for JUST such an occasion."
Steve arranged the levers in a pattern, and then the door slowly opened up, the shine almost blinding them, when the door opened completely, markus was astonished by what he saw.
two gleaming sets of armor, one gold, and one diamond, beneath them, there were diamond swords, with a sparkling red gem encased in the hilts of either one.
"i made this one for you, Father" Steve said, pointing at the golden set.
"I have to say Steve, this is a wondorus job you've done with these, but why do you never use them?"
"I was saving them for a special occasion"
"Clearly,"
They donned their armor, and set off towards the portal
"Are you ready?"
"As ready as i'll ever be Markus,"
The portals flames grew brighter, and brighter, and brighter, until they exploded, teleporting them into the unknown.
When Steve came to, he saw a hellish world, lava flowing like water over the landscape, thick red fog blocking his view, he wandered a little farther.
"Markus?" his voice echoed against the cavern's walls "Markus where are you?"
He heard a raspy breathing sound come from behind him. "Who's there?!" Steve jerked around "Hello?"
He heard footsteps, the thing was circling him, studying him ggrrrRRrrRRrrrrrOink!
"Who's there?!" *snort* GrrrRRRrrrRRrrr
Steve faced his fears, and placed a torch, to see his shadow-dwelling follower. What he saw was nothing short of spectacular, like a pig's skin, on a man's body, a grostesque, zombifyed soul, Steve couldnt help but feel bad for him
"A man and a pig, strapped together, it makes sense to me now" GGrrrrRRrrrrRRRrrrrRRrOink?
"hm....you're a, you're a.... a......."
"a Zombie Pig Man," Notch walked up from a distant hill, "one of Sysk's many failed experiments, It is sad, i dont really like being here often,"
"Why not?"
"It's personal, bad memories about a fallen world."
"Oh, i understand" He really didn't, he respected Markus, but he wanted to know more none the less.
GGGrrrrrRRRrrRRrrrrrlloorRRRRurrRRrr?
"Ok, what the Nether is that thing saying?"
"Hehe, good one," Markus enjoyed a chuckle "No one really knows, i employed Sysk to make me some....nevermind, either way, Sysk knows, we may be able to find him here,"
They looked around, Steve ventured off, he saw many other Zombie Pigmen, they seemed to be muttering to themselves under their breath, as if Steve could understand them, in reality, he couldnt understand a word of it. Him, Notch, and the pigman came to a cliff
"be wary Steve, if you fall, theres no guaruntee we will ever see you again"
"im being carefull," Steve looked back at Markus "Say,What's that?"
"oh no," Markus gulped "This is very bad"
"why, whats that?"
"You'll see,"
It came closer, like a white snowball falling throught a tub of red wine, Steve noticed it had arms, ten wiggleing tentacles, and a face, a weeping, ghastly white face, "Oh god,"
"Thats it!"
"what's it steve?"
"Thats the face i saw the other night!"
"impossible, Ghasts cannot enter the overworld"
There was a sudden glare, it was hurling fireballs at them, they tried to run away, every exit, cave, and cavern was blocked off. Everything was on fire aroudn them, and they couldnt get away.
"To the portal!" Markus shouted
they ran towards the purple flames, when a fireball shot past them, into the portal. The fireball exploded, the portal fell dark.
They couldn't escape

Steve, Markus, and the Pigman looked around for a way to escape, The Ghast looming ever closer. Steve’s head pivoted as if it were on a pottery wheel, the portal they used to get there was dark and inactive, and there were nothing but burning flames and craters the Ghast’s bombardment of fireballs left. Steve had no idea what to do, they knew that Netherrack,* once ignited, never stops burning. “We need to jump over the flames!” Steve yelled at the top of his lungs
“They’re too tall Steve! We’d get toasted!” Markus yelled back
“You have a better plan Markus?”
“GrrurrOinkUrrGur” The Zombie Pigman pointed up at the Ghast, it was closer now, only now could they see the enormity of it. The worst had yet to come, it opened its eyes, its mouth opened as well, it violently expelled a burning ball of fire, it hurtled towards them.
“There’s no time Steve, we need to think of something!” Markus had a panicked look on his face
“I’ve got one right here.” Steve said and raised his fist, he began running towards the fireball.
“Steve, what are you doing?!”
“What has to be done, Markus” he was running faster, the fireball was about to hit him.
“Steve, no!”
Steve swung his fist in an enraged punch, and to everyone’s surprise, it worked! The punch connected and the fireball began careening back towards the Ghast, it hit the Ghast in the face, the explosion caused it to shriek in pain.
“Marked return to sender!” Steve smirked at his seemingly suicidal act.
“Oh, thank goodness you’re alright my son, but it’s too early to celebrate, look!” Markus pointed back at the Ghast, it was still alive and well, if not angrier than before.
The Pigman turned around and started shuffling towards the portal
“What are you doing?” Steve remarked “The portal doesn’t work!”
The Pigman caught the Ghast’s eye, and it launched another fireball from its mouth, the Pigman dove to the ground, and the fireball exploded, the purple flames sparked back to life, and the portal turned back on. The Pigman looked back up at the Ghast with what appeared to be a spiteful smirk, but Steve couldn’t tell because of the Pigman’s mangled, decayed face
“You’re a genius!” Steve looked at the Zombie Pigman, who was still laying on the Netherrack.
“Go, Steve!” Markus yelled “You need to go before that Ghast takes the portal down again!”
“Right, come on!” They ran towards the portal, the Ghast launched another fireball, destroying the circle of fire that they were just in.
“Looks like we left just in time!” Steve said with a chuckle.
They stepped up to the Netherrack stairs they had carved out with their picks upon entry. The Ghast drew closer, knowing Steve had a way of dealing with its fireballs, it targeted Markus instead. It expelled another, powerful fireball; the explosion dropped Markus off his feet, and just barely missed the other two. “Go Steve, go now!” Markus screamed at the top of his lungs. The fireball had severely injured his legs, rendering him unable to walk.
“But what about you?!” Steve said, exasperated over Markus’ injury
“Steve, I promise you I’ll be OK!” Markus took another glance at the Ghast, it was prepping another flame ball “Now go!” The Ghast launched the fireball, it hit Notch dead center in the face, his head dropped hard onto the Netherrack ground below him, Markus Notch Persson was dead.
“Markus… Markus?!” a tear dropped out of his eye, the Pigman looked up at the Ghast, and pushed Steve into the portal before he could suffer a similar fate. Steve’s body disintegrated into the bluish-purple flames and disappeared from the Realm of the Nether.
The portal glowed brighter and brighter, catching Charlotte’s attention as she walked by. The portal discharged and Steve tumbled out into his home on the over world, he reached back at the portal but it fell dark once more.
“Markus…..oh Markus no…”
Charlotte opened Steve’s door and walked to where Steve stood, still on his knees.
“What happened?” She asked
“He’s gone Charlotte, that monster killed him”
“What is the meaning of this?!” Ez walked through Steve’s front door to see Charlotte comforting Steve, who was still on his knees.
“Markus is gone,” he held up the Golden helmet that he made for Markus “gone for good”

He heard footsteps, the thing was circling him, studying him
ggrrrRRrrRRrrrrrOink!
"Who's there?!"
*snort* GrrrRRRrrrRRrrr
Steve faced his fears, and placed a torch, to see his shadow-dwelling follower. What he saw was nothing short of spectacular, like a pig's skin, on a man's body, a grostesque, zombifyed soul, Steve couldnt help but feel bad for him
"A man and a pig, strapped together, it makes sense to me now"
GGrrrrRRrrrrRRRrrrrRRrOink?
