I'm starting college on the 20th and I'll be doing a bit of both Economics and Computer Science.. Just the basics right now but I intend to go towards Java development and network administration. The Finance path is irrelevant but I plan to double-major.
Anyways, I have been playing Minecraft for about 2 years on and off now. I've never really learned much as far as even Redstone goes, but I have been OP/Mod a few times before resigning because I lost interest in the game. (A mix of the 12-16 year old crowd taking over and the lack of traditional non-rpg servers)
But without paying for a server, how can I just "tinker" with things Admins do on a daily basis. Installing mods and keeping everything stable, setting up the mods, etc.. Maybe even some mod development.. This has always perked my interests more than just being a Mod.
Any Admin/Owner of an established server mind playing a "mentor" role for me? Any websites? I don't really fancy making a server on my PC as I only have a 256GB SSD and I'm a little OCD'ish on my file/space organization..
PS
I have no idea where to post this type of question on the forums. If there's a section where I could get more replies, please move it there..
Just to note, I'm not interested in becoming a staff member of any server. I just would like a current Admin or Owner to teach me in his or her's spare time.
The only thing you really can do is the very thing you just said you don't want to do... Make a server on your own machine.
Make one, tinker with it, get a few buddies to mess around on it, maybe even have them attempt to bust it just so you can learn how to fix any problems people might cause. That's the only good advice I can give you.

Well is there any detailed guide on it? The one on the Wiki is too vague.
When running a server there is no guide. Stuff happens, plugins break, players complain, greifers grief, trolls troll, errors occur. In the end it's all about how much you can do on your own. The best way to get the experience you want is to run a server.
As I said before, start by hosting one on your own machine with just a few friends. If you find that easy enough you and can get a hold of a setup that will allow more people then start up a full server and work from there.
You can not run a half decent server for very long while following a cookie-cutter recipe how to guide. If you ever find the resources to run a server of your own and decide that you want to let me know and I will think about helping you more then, but for now experiment on your own and ask questions as problems arise. Don't ask vague questions about how to run a server because there is no all encompassing answer.

I got it set up. I'm using BukkitCraft 1.5.1 R2 or whatever..
setup was easy.. How do I know if I am Admin.. like How servers have [Admin] [Owner] [Mod] etc
And is the Whitelist working if I have joined without adding myself to whitelist?
And is there a preferred tool to edit the property/yml files?
Just now having to figure out how to edit plugins..
Is there a tool that doesnt jumble it all up like Notepad does? And is having both Essentials and a permissions mod like PEX needed or will just having PEX or the other fine?
I found plugins to be too much hassle. I left those to our team coder who wrote some custom plugins. There's a lot to running a server and sometime you just need to find the parts you're good at and do those to perfection while finding others who are better at the parts you're not. Ask someone else about the plugin stuff or find someone else to work on it. Same goes for other aspects like moderating, events, etc.

We run Essentails and Pex on our server. They run very well together. Download Notepad++ off the internet for messing around with mod configs.
If you are learning Java, or have a good starting knowledge of java it should not be difficult for you to find a server that is looking for someone to configure their plugins and perhaps work on custom content. I am running a server - had no coding experience, I am actually quite inept at most things technical. We hired a Java guy for our server. He is not a super advanced coder, (fairly new to it) but does a wonderful job for us. He wrote a custom plugin for us and helped us get our plug ins working. Any server should be willing to make you an admin if you are doing their plugin development and tech assistance, since no server can run without someone with those set of skills.

Maybe soon..
But yeah, the developers really made their mods stupid proof with all of their useful comments in the files explaining each thing. It's just time consuming. Ill try Notepad++
And I wont start any CS classes until Spring. I have 3 math courses this summer and 3 more this Fall then I can start with introductory to Java.. But I can still learn how to install and manage plugins until then!
I really dont plan on being an Admin or anything though for a server. I just want to learn for myself personally and maybe eventually start my own server or get promoted on a server Im already active then.. I've been Mod before on servers I've never been on before and I know from experience nobody will respect you because they have been active on the server much longer than me and they didnt get the position. And I agree with them.

I more meant to find a server trying to start up than one that is established. There are a dozen of posts daily that are "LF plug in manager" kind of things from servers that are trying to get off the ground.

Never thought of those.. maybe in a few weeks. I'm extremely slow at editing right now and havent remembered any commands..

So You'd suggest both PEX and Essentials?
Yes. I'm not super techy but I think you need both? I believe they do different things altogether. But I'm mostly pulling this info out of thin air. I know we run both. Essentials gives a lot of permissions but Pex seems to control who you give the permissions to??? Like Pex lets you make different groups, like an admin group and a member group and give them both a different set of Essential perms. Something like that.

Ahh I gotcha
I thought Essentials was like Permissions, groups, anti cheat, etc everything all in one.. I should read them before installing. Youre pretty much right. Essentials is basically a buttload of extra commands and PEX allows you to create groups and determine who can use which commands and which commands they cant use.. something like that..

Yeah, I believe essentials has a lot of random things built into it. It seems most servers run essentials. Pex seems popular but there are other Pex like ones that seem popular too.

Yes. I am a co-owner of a server. Our setup is Myself and my Co-owner. We pay for the bills, I did most of the server "building" and designing. My partner is more technical than myself (and just starting to learn java). We hired a "Java guy" who did the more advanced setup and some custom work who is an "Admin" on our server - but basically only handles techy stuff (his choice - he did not want full admin responsibilities, although we offered him co-ownership. He wants to be mostly part time help for us and be able to work on outside projects)

How much do you pay yearly?
I have always wanted to start my own server but never really had the willpower.
I have always wanted to start my own server but never really had the willpower.
Our "startup" fees for the last 6 months have run about $250 - $300 dollars. This includes everything we have spent money on including the "server", ventrilo, webhosting, custom domains, and a few other misc. items. The server itself runs us around $30 a month. But we have a very small starting setup and plan to expand as needed.
The biggest expense has been time. I have been putting in around 80 hours per week for the past 3-4 weeks just to get us off the ground. I'm one of three people who have been doing similar amounts of work. It really is a LOT of work. But worth it. Its been fun, and I've learned a lot.
