I, myself - like other people - am tired of seeing poorly written staff applications on here. Alot of your words are squished together in a sentence like so:
Name:xxxApplying for:xxxAge:xx
or
Name: xxxx
Applying for: xxxxx
Age: xx
Why should you be picked:xxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
They look super sloppy, not enough is written down and most of the time - the experience isn't there. Your grammar is off, spelling mistakes and the overall presentation isn't satisfying.
That is why I am here for you today - to teach you how to write a proper application, make it look nice on paper and different ways to convince the employer why she or he should hire you!
Key points
Using Bold
If I was looking to hire you, I'd probably write down a small of an application example and expect you to fill it out in full, enough so I was able to read it. Below I will post an example of what an employer might write:
IGN:
Name:
Age:
Timezone:
Hours of availability:
Experience:
Have you ever been banned?:
Just because the employer hasn't made the application in bold font, doesn't mean you don't have to either. He or she didn't space it either, but it leaves room for you to space it how you want to in your application. Now if you went to fill out that application without bold it would look something like this:
IGN: Winterkaust
Name: Vanessa
Age: 20
Timezone: PST
Hours of availability: 9-5 everyday.
Experience: I've been apart of several different servers, actively monitoring them and building.
Have you ever been banned?: Yes, got banned for being "old"
Notice how the application looks quite bland from this perspective. Now look at it again after it's been edited and put in bold.
IGN: Winterkaust
Name: Vanessa
Age: 20
Timezone: PST
Hours of availability: 9-5 everyday.
Experience: I've been apart of several different servers, actively monitoring them and building.
Have you ever been banned?: Yes, got banned for being "old"
By utilizing the "boldness" in the forums here, it instantly pops out your application, setting it aside from other applicants.
Spaces
Spacing plays a big part in an application. If you tend to not spam your space bar often - I'm officially requesting it! Below is an example of what spaces can do to a finished application:
IGN: Winterkaust
Name: Vanessa
Age: 20
Timezone: PST
Hours of availability: 9-5 everyday.
Experience: I've been apart of several different servers, actively monitoring them and building.
Have you ever been banned?: Yes, got banned for being "old"
Looking at this application is already better on my eyes. The spaces are defined and it heightens your application look by 10%. However, because the application looks so empty, so do the spaces. In this next segment, I want to teach you how to write entire paragraphs.
Writing full bodied answers
In many applications that I read, alot of people use one sentence to answer the questions asked. I mean, one word sentences are okay when you're answering about your name or age - but about your experience? That's a no go and instant denial of application by anyone.
So, you don't have alot of experience when it comes to applying for the job you want? Write more. Write your heart out - show who you're writing to you really WANT that job and you will work exceptionally hard to get it. Don't go using CAPS for the entire application, that looks seriously unprofessional. Below is a small of an example of using persuasion to your advantage:
IGN:
Winterkaust
Name:
Vanessa
Age:
20
Timezone:
PST
Hours of availability:
9-5 everyday, can contribute as many hours as possible.
Experience:
I've been working on and off with several different people and servers. Some of the servers (which display past projects and builds) still exist today.
The following servers I've worked on:
DeadlyCraft
FeverClan
WoodyCraft
DynamicCraft
ForeverPvP
DragonCraft
CreationNZ
ExCraft
[Insert build links here if applying for Building staff]
Have you ever been banned?:
Yes, got banned for being "old" The server owner and staff were of a young age and felt I could be too much of an influence on their young, developing minds.
Somehow, with those bullet points there, the application looks already; much cleaner than before. It helps when you're listing off experience, if you have alot of it and servers or names of people you know to prove it, to put it down in bullet point or numerals. It also lengthens your application to give it a more "full bodied" look in contrast to if you hadn't put them in.
Smilies and extra bits
Using smilies is an immediate no-go. Say you were writing an application for a real world job - you wouldn't be doodling all over your paper to "spruce it up" now, would you? Extra little bits like hearts and any other text doodles can be used... but in moderation. Like you wanted to change the bullet points into stars, that can be done.
Using color can also help make your application stand out instantly against other applications, just know not to use certain colors that strain the eyes. Stuff like bright yellow or bright pink. You want your application to be seen - but not seen to the point where the reviewer needs sunglasses to see your post.
<A personal summary, preferred to be atleast 50 words+>
Academic
<Your educations, schools>
Areas of expertise
<Areas of expertise(sql, minigames, particles etc etc)>
Career History
<Your career history, list as much as you can here about your previous work.>
Other Information
<Some information about you, preferably above 50 words.>
That is the format I would prefer in an application if i were requesting one, there is of course other way of doing so, this is the way I do it. And is always the way i send my application when I look for work.
You can of course implement the stuff you mentioned in here, which is preferred, making the application look good.
That style of application is excellent. It really does give the feel of a basic "Cover letter" design.
This is an awesome guide! If only the eight-year old "HEad-admin" application spammers would read it...
Also, maybe a Grammar/Spelling Key Point would be instructive.
Thank you You can share this to people you feel need help in writing applications. It wouldn't be much of an insult to them, more like a (hamburger) helper.
I thought grammar and spelling would be a given, but I'll insert it in.
This is an excellent guide, unfortunately I have a feeling it won't reach the audience that needs it most...
Regardless of that, great job on the guide! I would definitely like to see more people using the letter format that mathiaseklund demonstrated a few posts above. If you have the time I think it would be very cool of you to add some information regarding the use of a letter format.

Thank you so much for the reply, and yes. This will continue to not be see, which is a shame.

Well well, I applaud and thank you for making this thread. Very helpful for the people who don't know how to write a clean and professional application, most of the people's application that I have seen here quite a lot are very sloppy and made with no effort. These guidelines need to be seen by these people.
Thank you! I am sure all of you feel this way too, there are way to many "staff hoppers". There is over a hundred 8-12 year olds that will sit there on the mc forums all day applying for every single thread they see! I just dont understand why they would do that, it is very irresponsible and just proves that you arent loyal to a minecraft server! When I post threads asking for applications, I tend to look through the person applying recent posts, 90% of the time they have applied on multiple threads within the same day.
Well, I will continue to bump this thread as it gets knocked off the top 3 pages

I agree. I'd love for more people to actually see this thread to gain a better understanding of what a good application looks like. I mean, I see some people trying...but its still hard to read.

Thanks in advance for all future bumps :3
I at one point was considered a staff hopper, but I grew to realize how immature that is - and yes, It does show that I'm a needy greedy person for a staff rank. As well a disloyal. (As much as I'd like to deny it)
Yea, I will admit, I used to be immature and irresponsible as well as a staff hopper, but I grew out of that habit. I stopped once I realized how much more efficient it was to actually dedicate to a project and stick with it!
This guide is very through and concise. Something to note as well which I've seen in a lot of different application forms is the lack of information of either it being prior work or experience in server administration. I also do agree that all applicants should not just write "i want to be admin", they should provide why they should be chosen. Minecraft servers are moderated by volunteers but the lack of proper use of grammar is a key factor when applying.
