Can someone PM me the IP of the current official server? It doesn't matter if it's down, i just want to know what it is. I'm one of the head trappers/landscapers if you need credibility.
Guys, PM me for the server IP, I will only give you it if you have a confirmed Skype. Sorry, but you need one.
To landscapers, we really do not need you yet, however, if you guys want you can submit me or Brenny or Liam a 500x500 map. I will upload a blank 500 x 500 if you want.
And remember, nothing is set in stone... There might be bows or there might not be. I personally think a bow would be over powered unless we find a mod to decrease the damage(i'll look into it, but I could use a modder on this and other things).
we should set up a skype chat for all the people working on the project so we can communicate better. my skype name is "ringer." with the period.
And... contestants could possibly have some ways to cheat, we need to fix these.
●They could sue X-ray texture packs
●they could use autofisters, autoclickers that make it so you can punch 200,000 times a seccond
●a viewer could secretly tell all the information of the fight to a fighter as he watches it live
●they might get information of the arena by crew members accidently letting info out, or some other way
now, for the x-ray packs, maybe we could have people look at the footage and see if before they entered a secret burrow of someone else, they were looking through blocks or if they are constintly looking towards the ground, or the like. however, this means it coudn't be live.
with autoclickers... well, idk. personnally, however, i don't think it's that big of a problem. i made a quicky little auto clicker to see if it could work well, but they arent really very efective, as you can only inflict damage to an entity ever seccond or so (because they turn red and all) so, again, not a big problem.
ah, reconaissence.............. a fighter could know where everyone is at once, a total advantage that would throw the balance off. how to solve? a non live game ._.
and lastly how to solve this one, just... be careful, keep secrets, talk in whispers!

Yeah, the spectator info seems to be the biggest problem that can't be solved. We could either not have a live audience, or we could make sure that spectators are not allowed to chat at all, unless making a bet.
I think that all forms of betting should be done prior to the start of the match. That way, only gamemakers should be allowed in the public chat channel after the match starts. And if a spectator wants to sponsor a contestant during the match, they can use the economy mod's Pay feature to send their contestant of choice some money, and the contestant can buy what they want. This effectively removes all need for global chat during the match from spectators. Although I suggest making a chat channel specifically for spectators, so they can talk with each other, but they can't contact contestants. (I'm sure most chat mods can create specific channels for groups.)
Chat, for the most part, would be disabled(hopefully) for fighters and spectators.
a good portion of war-fare is diplomacy and preparation (IE talking, delegating and gathering supplies/reconnaissance). So, fighters should be able to talk. However, I agree that spectators not be able to talk with the exception of making bets. for, they have no theoretical reason to talk and it would cause more problems than good. Likewise, when they do talk (as betting gives away certain information), it should be in whisper (possibly a spectator chat room thing?) and the fighters shouldn't be able to hear. Just a suggestion on that matter.
Edit: Didn't want to double post as I missed this:

Although the economy mod suggestion would solve problems, it changes the sponsor system as stated in the book (as well as the role of the contestant). What you propose will allow it so that the contestant can always get exactly what they need at the most opportune time. This causes several problems just on the surface:
1. Renders the Cornucopia useless
2. Changes the role of sponsor into a more passive/less engaging role
3. makes certain situations unbalanced.
So, unfortunately, it will cause more in-game problems than it solves. :sad.gif:

Yeah, spectators and contestants should have separate channels.

Eh, i agree on pregames chat, but during, i say spectators and fighters don't talk... But if they have a alliance, skype or similar is allowed(not like we could stop it anyways). Which moves me to my next point. Betting and such has no real point, other than keeping truthful to the book. I don't believe in spectators at all. They just lead to people whining about the spectator talking to the fighter on a IM service. Ideas? I don't think the benefits outweigh the risks.
Well, the only solution would be having only the gamemakers, (Trappers, landscapers, redstone experts, etc...) and the fighters on the map at the time, along with people we know we can trust to film each point of view.
Who is designing the map? I cannot find that information anywhere and that is probably the most vital role.
We can't find a way to tackle a 500 x 500 map. But i'll work on it today and update you guys.

Is the server down? It hasn't let me on for a while.
Yes, for now though. The guy who runs it can't keep it up all day.
smitty i can run a server ive run a 2561x2561 b4 with 20 ppl on it and can keep on all day if needed. but once server is done making ill transfer the world over but i cant run 24 7 all the time maybe for like a month or 2

Interesting point! You're right in a short-term goal. However, if these "games" go more than one fight then betting would be beneficial to people who want to watch multiple fights and not just this one. That's the one and only use of betting. Also, there are essential two (In my unproffesional opinion) types of spectators.
1. one who watches a game for "personal" interest (IE for entertainment)
2. one who watches for "professional" interest (IE to study applied battle techniques)
I agree that type 1 spectators shouldn't be on because they have the potential to become partial to a player and "cheat". However, type two spectators (as being "professional") shouldn't have that same potential to become partial because they are watching for research/work and not entertainment.
That brings up another interesting point. We're still not sure if we will host this as a one time thing, or as an on-going season type event, where there's a new map every week. If we decide to go with the latter option, then it will be very difficult to host it on a professional server, as we will be renting a new one every week. Which is why I propose if we make this an ongoing theme, we should host the maps on a gamemaker's PC, not a dedicated one. The server I was on yesterday was extremely good. It was able to handle a 50 TNT explosion with 20 people on at once with no framerate drop at all. Before we can make the official arena, we have to decide if this will be a one time event.
I think we should have a local chat of about 10 blocks. I don't think contenstants should have to go through the trouble of hooking up on skype or something, and what's the fun of the games if they are communicating from long distances and telling each other where other people are and stuff. With a local chat, it is fair, people can spy on others if they are close enough to make it even more interesting, and just like in the actuall games, once you two part for a plan or something you are completely cut off from eachother until you find eachother again.
The "the team" section clearly says to PM him to join.
