Chapter One: Arrival
Of the people from whom we are descended....
It was not always that our people lived upon the plateau. Once, long before our arrival, we were part of a much greater nation. These peoples dominated the lands around them and bent the world to their will. Power was their base desire and they would do any number of things in order to attain it. Such was their downfall.
Resources exhausted, the land dying, and the people left hollow, they were left with no choice but to abandon their nation and send out a few such of their people that were not so tainted with lust for domination that they may be able to establish a new land. To ensure the survival of their species, the Elders of our old nation drew together three of their greatest ships.
On these ships they rested their hopes for our people to continue on. To find a new land. To learn from the mistakes of our ancestors. And to persevere.
Of the three ships that set out, only one survived the harshness of the seas. The fifty survivors aboard this ship found themselves short of supplies and on a strange new land. The eternal winter that met them on one side and the scorching desert on the other killed no few of their numbers. The ship was broken down into wagons and the scarce supplies that remained were loaded aboard. I was a child at the time, but old enough to carry a sword. I was expected to march with the men, so march I did.
Years passed.
Through desert and jungle and forest we made way. Our progress was slowed by our unfamiliarity with the land and our lack of Mages. Those few we had were nothing compared to what those we had left behind were capable of. But we would not destroy this land as we had destroyed our last. When our last Mage fell ill and died, the group decided that to be the end of it. If we were to make a new land in order to sustain our people, it would have to be without the influence of our ancestors. None of their ways may be included in ours. To save our people, we had to destroy our heritage.
It is for that reason that I will delve no further into our past. Whatever clues may remain are better cast aside than ever being put into script. We are the people of Rayleri. This is our home. And we will do everything we must to defend it.

Firstly, I would like to say that while I have encountered several RPs that claim to be member driven, they fall drastically short. They group their Admin into one group and anyone that wants to participate in plot has to join that particular group. My plot will not be specifically member driven. However, my Admin will NOT be allowed to share groups. That said, there will be several different ways to participate in the plot. It is my hope that there will be enough different methods that no one will feel out of place. Everyone will be able to find a group that they mesh well with and become a part of it.
Secondly, I will not be using a pre-rendered world or enlisting the help of mass-builders to create the setting. Except under very specific circumstances dictated by myself, all building will be done in Survival mode by the players. I will be involving myself as well in order to help shape the overall city (I have some smecksi ideas for what this place could look like) but I will not be the sole creator. This will be an ever evolving project by the group as a whole. Those who join early and stick around long will see this place evolve from a gathering of huts to a bustling city. And, hopefully even more exciting, you will see the full story evolve from arrival to whatever lays in our future.
Finally, I would like to mention that while there will be much room for all groups to play their role in the main plot, I will be playing director to the primary story-line. My Admins will be expected to direct the sub-plots and tie them into the general story. Groups that are active and receive a lot of attention will have greater chances to take a staring role in the main story. That said, it should be noted that my character will not be a part of any one group. This is in order to avoid any favoritism to one specific group. This may not seem apparent at first, but will become very obvious before too long.

Hey, glad to hear it!
I am planning on working out a way to rent out a small bit of server space to open it up as early as possible. I've gotta wait to make sure a few other things pan out first, though. If it does work out, it will mean that the first group of people will help act as a control group so I can cater the bukkit pluggins to match what is needed.
Once I get my PC up and running, I'll likely be running IT as the dedicated server. That will mean quite a few more people and no need to get donations from people to keep it up and running.
You know, IF it all works out as I hope.
I had hoped to hear something back today that would have told me that I would be able to get a server up and running within the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I did not hear any such thing. I'm hoping I get the news tomorrow.
Again, this 'early server' would only have a certain number of open slots. I don't anticipate this being an issue in the beginning, but I wouldn't be too upset if there WERE moments where the server was full.
Whilst I cannot help provide funds, I should be able to bring two other people with me to this server, not sure how strong they are Role Play wise though so, at the very least I can't wait to try it out.

I'm not interested in doing kits or asking for donations. I can't say it won't always be that way, but I will say that this won't be a 'Pay for OP' server.
I planned on buying a PC Tower anyways. Why make random people pay for it?
I want this server just as much as I am sure you guys who have posted or subscribed do. I have the means of paying for it, so why shouldn't I?
In any case, I am not against newbies joining in. I don't expect it to be 'All RP, all the time' after all. There will be a lot of room for many different things.
Hiya, folks!
Should be sleeping, instead I'm perusing plugins for the server. I sure do find excellent excuses to not sleep.
Planning on running this as a Bukkit Server. I've been looking at block protection, zoning, configurable chat channels, and just some fun stuff to play with. I have a nice starting list and want to hear some thoughts on them.
Firstly, there is a Mod called 'Precious Stones' that seems to work well for setting up different territories. This includes drawing a city border as well as creating house plots within the town. Just how flexible this plugin is has yet to be seen, but I'll probably be doing quite a bit of research into it. Finding it replaced a couple of things on my list due to its massive amount of capabilities.
'Essentials' is another good possibility. As I said, I am not looking to do DonorKits or whatever, but a StarterKit wouldn't be a bad idea. On top of that, Essentials has chat functions that I may be able to get to work as I would like. If it doesn't, it will either be used until I find something better, or discarded entirely.
'MyHorse' is a plugin I have seen used before and kinda fell in love with. No longer will randoms be able to steal your favorite white horse with the gray back that carried you over an entire land mass without faltering once, saving your neck from constant peril at the hands of living and undead alike that decide you shouldn't stay alive anymore....
'Shopkeepers' is another plugin that I have seen before. Anyone who has played SkyBlocks should be familiar with these super talented testificates. Admin shops have bottomless stores and player stores feed from a chest. An excellent way to ensure that there will always be supplies for the city without having to destroy the terrain to make it so. Besides; nothing worse than a hundred sloppy mines.
And finally....
'mcMMO' is one of many plugins that frequents servers like this. A massive skills leveling system with unlockable abilities and perks for higher leveled players is not something to shrug off. This would be a great way to reward active players, rather than asking for their money before they see any return.
Some items on this list may end up disappearing or being replaced. What I am interested in is if anyone has experience with these plugins, or easily usable/editable counterparts that will work well with the other items on this list.
That they work together is important. I don't want to spend a full day trying to get the server up and running because I have plugins that can't play nice with each other.
The sooner I have a set list of plugins to help protect myself, my server, and my players, the sooner we can be up and running.
Might I suggest Factions? In a server like this there would be very many opportunities for political and material strife.

If I were to run a plugin like this, it would likely be Towny. Except for the fact that its plot layout doesn't appear to be variable but instead is based off the the exact same grid as purchasing the plots of land in the first place, it would be perfect. Precious Stones allows for variables sizes to be assigned for everything.
Factions encourages PvP over most anything else. Though I do anticipate some situations where PvP will happen, the primary aim of the server is going to be Players vs Environment.

I got the news I was waiting for today. It is still a couple weeks out, but the server WILL be going live before the end of April. I'd do it sooner if I could, but besides the fact that I need to still get my plugins squared away, my situation won't allow me to start the server before then anyways.
It looks like I will be replacing Precious Stones with 3 plugins. Towny, Lockette, and a anti-griefer/roll-back plugin to help protect peoples homes. As multi-purpose-awesome as Precious Stones looks, it also looks like a lot of work for myself and any future Admin. Best to keep it simple.
I did a bit of research and found that, while there is fast enough internet in my area, I will not be able to take over hosting the server anywhere near as soon as I had hoped. This means we will be on a third party server longer than I had anticipated. Nothing has changed. It is still fully my aim to make this server free for all. I am very much against creating an unbalanced game-play simply because someone can afford to buy their way into Uber status. Players will become more powerful by being active on the server, not by investing in it.
I am also working to bring in someone to help establish an economy within the server. As I do not intend to install any economy plugins aside from Shopkeepers, which uses in game items for trade, I have decided on the items that will be used as currency. These are, in ascending order of value;
Emeralds
Iron Ingots
Gold Ingots
Diamonds
As for the value of each as compared to purchasable items, I am hoping that the person I have been speaking with will be able to help establish value. Lacking their help, I will be doing some research to get it squared away myself.
I have seen systems like that are player-centric crumble due to greed; especially with very few people present to set prices. Everyone wants to be rich as quickly as they can and don't realize that as the cost of items increases, the value of the currency decreases.
Because of this, it is most likely that the economy will be kept static. There will be shops that players can interact with to buy and sell at very specific prices. It is my intent for this economy to allow for everyone to profit, though NOT by leaps and bounds. Wealth will be another thing that requires activity on the server, and it will be available in many ways. Almost any endeavor will allow a person to accrue wealth. It is in this way that I hope to help make the world a little more in-depth. People can essentially choose a career for themselves.
Here's to looking forward to April being the beginning of an exciting new world for all of us.
Been spending the last few hours testing the plugins out on a server.
Don't get excited.... It's being run on my laptop and would probably crash into oblivion if more than 5 people got on it....
Towny is being... difficult. That's the PG word. Difficult.
Most of the other plugins have loaded smoothly and have been pretty straightforward in their use. Which is great, because their config files aren't quite as easy to understand....
I am working on increasing spawn rates within a local area around players only. This would mean that there would be less mobs in the world, but it would seem like more to each player. Makes for an interesting challenge and encourages group play. I will not be adding custom mobs or jacking up their inherent power. Increased mob spawn will be sufficient to drive people to safety at night. Anything more is overkill.
I am also working on setting up chat channels. Afraid I might need another mod for that.... Or perhaps I just need to delve into the plugins I already have and get them figured out.
WorldProtector was also installed and is working great. I will need some time with it to get its nuances figured out, but it is effective.
So, here's where things stand now. The server should be hammered out within a week. Optimistically; end of the weekend. That's being awfully optimistic, though. I have a lot of commands to learn and permissions to adjust.
The server should be live for, oh, I'd say 20 people to start, before the end of April. I say 'should' because Murphy's Law is always in effect.
The server should be worked out before then, but if not, I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty with that while you guys get started.
So, that's where we are right now. The world is still almost completely untouched as of right now, though I expect it will be short work to see a city begin to form.
This should be able to help you or whoever is setting up the economy work out the prices; http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/minecraft.gamepedia.com/c/ca/PercentOfOreByHeight.png?version=ff703ce40dae5e2b10fa2d7b52d30177
It is a chart of the percentages of blocks of ore per 1000 blocks of stone, and at which heights. One thing to keep in mind, it doesn't show emerald. Emerald is currently found in only temples, through trade with villagers, and in only one biome, the extreme hills biome. Making it the rarest (its usefulness could be debated later) ore in the game. It should be valued as such, seeing as it is now getting an important use. Another thing to consider is using only a gold based economy, with nuggets being a unit of 1, an ingot a unit of 9, and a block a unit of 81. And work it from there, since however, it is not 10-bit counting, instead 9 bit, the numbers for prices could be very unusual, with numbers like 54 being significantly more common than 50, as 54 is 6 ingots under this system. Something to think about.

Great info, but here's something that you didn't take into consideration (because I didn't mention it).
Mobs will drop emeralds. Emeralds will also be available as an item that can be earned by trading in x amount of blocks. Like, a stack of any uncut wood could be 2 or 3 Emeralds. Behold, the power of an Admin Shopkeeper!
By using those 4 base items for our economy and not the nuggets or blocks, we can avoid increments of 9 and assign values more conducive to a simple economy. We can assign US Dollar values to these blocks.
As such, Emeralds would be $1, Iron would be $5, Gold would be $10, and Diamond would be $20.
Considering further that I will be using a plugin to limit map size, and that mining will NOT be the only way to bring these items into the economy, I am hoping to prevent Mining from being OP. This can be further encouraged by either preventing any mining in the world except for Infinite Stone Generators. And considering that the economy is set in stone (lawlpun) by the Shopkeepers plugin that I am going to be working with, I anticipate Stone being only just less valuable than wood, considering how easy it will be to gather as compared to having to grow a grove and chop it down and replant it. Finding this balance to make working as a Woodcutter a worthy endeavor will be... interesting.
Oh, and by the way, the server may be live next week. Maybe. Most likely. Probably.
So with the map limit you are limiting the amount of ores and such to be had, yet there must still be a way to get those items into circulation. The issue I foresee here is during the first few weeks there would only be emeralds in the economy. And this may continue indefinitely as the ores used for commerce, especially diamond and iron, will never see the market as currency, instead in themselves being traded as tools, weapons, and armor constantly need to be replenished. However, I am going to assume that these would only be able to be made by some sort of specialist, because you seem to be very on top of things. But still, most of the items that are suggested for the economy must be placed at such a denomination that using them as currency makes more sense than using them as material. The problem here is, the price for those items would rise to meet the value of the goods in them, as well as the demand for items made with them. I wonder how much the administration would need to get involved to keep the economy from being stagnant. I also thought of a way, if you are interested, for a player run economy to be completely viable. Should you wish to hear it.
