MyCraft PvP is a full-time survival server that introduces a new concept to the Minecraft server scene: karma. Help out your fellow players and they can thank you with a like. Make them angry, and they'll retaliate with dislikes. The more karma you have, the more you influence the server.
We haven't perfected the concept yet, but the vision is to facilitate a self-moderating server.
How karma works
Karma is used for determining everything about your position on the server. It influences your power to kick and be kicked, your ability to affect others' karma, and what benefits you receive.
Every new player starts with 0 karma, and gains it by the following rules:
Each hour of gameplay gives a total of 1 karma, partially allocated every minute
Each /like you receive gives a differing amount depending on the karma of the source, generally between 1-5
Each vote on Minestatus or MinecraftServers.org gives 0.5 karma
Conversely, you also lose karma by the following rules:
Each /dislike you receive loses a differing amount depending on the karma of the source, generally between 1-3
If you are voted to be kicked, you lose a proportional amount of karma to the fraction of the server which agreed to kick you
If you drop below -10 karma, you will be automatically banned.
Kicking works through a voting process, in which every player has a chance to influence the outcome. For the semantics of this process, take a look at the commands section at the bottom of this post.
Extra benefits of having karma are to be decided as we collect feedback from the community.
What do you mean by "pseudo-vanilla"?
MyCraft PvP doesn't use Bukkit, or any other traditional server mods. Instead, we developed our own interface to (literally) hook into the vanilla Minecraft server. This means that when Minecraft is updated, we don't need to rely on the slow process of figuring out all the class names again—our mod essentially updates itself. If you're interested, check out the work-in-progress source code on GitHub.
Server specs
32 GB RAM, 2x 120GB SSDs in RAID 1, Intel Xeon E3-1245v2, daily automated backups to Amazon S3.
Hosted in Eastern Canada, latency should be excellent across much of North America and Europe—but please let us know if you're experiencing bad performance and we'll do our best to fix it!
One cool thing to note is that we've developed a way to completely restart the server without disconnecting clients. This means vastly better uptime since disconnects are rare. We may open-source this project in the future.
Got history?
MyCraft PvP is the reincarnation of MyCraft Extreme SMP, a server created over two years ago that has seen ~99% uptime in that period. With a bigger and badder server, we're here to stay.
Commands
/vote kick <player> — initiate a new vote to kick the target player.
/vote <yes|no> [player] — agree or disagree with a vote. If there is more than one active vote, specify the player as well.
/info <player> — display stats about a player.
/like <player> — commend a player for their thoughtful actions!
/dislike <player> — call out a player for doing something you didn't like.
You can /like or /dislike a particular player at most once per hour. Also, all these commands support autocomplete—press tab when typing a player name and it'll automatically fill in the rest.
Looks cool, not all of spawn is protected though. Still have no idea how I'm going to build a base.
Any area even 1 block outside of the built area isn't currently supposed to be protected. Did you find somewhere inside the built area that's not protected?

Ideally they'll just get disliked back to the point where their dislikes don't carry any power.
