So, my forum mod application has still not been reviewed, even though the forum post on the application said it would take one week, not one month. GG Minecraftforums staff, GG no re.
I made a new forums account since I don't use that email anymore. Anyway, I had a quick suggestion I wanted to post.
I am a new player, as you all know. I found it a little bit difficult walking out of spawn and getting to where I can build at first, considering it is best (in my opinion) to live near a road. But what I am suggesting, is a Recruit build world. If you are a recruit, you go to the build world, and once you have earned builder, you have access to other warps. This would do two things. 1: On Stefan's server, I often used to see builds of users taking up prime spot on the street, who had logged on, never achieved a rank or built anything notable, and then been banned. Plus, if a user really liked his build, and one of the Staff approved it, it could be WE moved into the normal build world. Plus, people looking to grief wouldn't be able to find griefable builds in the non Recruit world, discouraging someone to log in and grief. 2: It would make the quality of builds on the street raise, enticing people and providing a better selection of screenies to advertise the server.

Just my thoughts,
Bach.
It's an interesting thought, BachBoy. We'll need to think on this.
Excuse me if I'm being a bit dim (I do feel a bit sluggish this morning) and I've got the wrong end of the stick but is this the same sort of thing that MDCreator suggested on page 26?
Also, something I've been wondering - since we've got a no-unban policy (that's true right? Once some loser has been banned, they don't get to keep coming back by just making lame apologies?), wouldn't we just be better off simply removing builds of those banned? Frees up space - which like Bach says, they might have taken prime real-estate that other trustworthy players could utilise, and gets rid of ugly half-finished builds that are now never going to be completed.
With regard to unbanning players, the general rule is that we don't. Especially the classic scenario, where someone griefs, then posts "Sorry, I didn't know. Plz unban!!!" No. However, I take a situational approach when someone asks to be unbanned. If someone swears in chat and is banned, and they admit that they were using very poor judgement, and makes a genuine plea to come back, as they want to be a part of this community, I will consider it. I think some servers really lean too hard in the "everyone gets a second chance" direction, which really drives me crazy.
If we ban a player, I don't have a problem at all with removing their builds. We just need to be careful to remove solo builds only, as that has caused some issues in the past, where we would ban and global rollback. Then, we'd see some team builds that had been half-erased. Staff, if you see builds of banned players, flag them and I'll remove them.
Yeah, more often than not, the clowns in question are just telling the staff what they want to hear anyway ('really sorry, won't do it again, I love this server, all my friends play here').
It's odd how the very last thing some people learn about multi-player Minecraft is what griefing is. You'll have someone who knows the ins & outs of the gameplay types, admin commands, everything about all the latest mods, have played on countless servers and yet somehow they don't know that the first thing you do is read the rules or what griefing is.
IIRC, I found some insulting signs directed towards one of the staff a few months back, mentioned it and they were removed. I also pointed out at the time that I thought the house had been griefed (as it had some odd structure built on the roof) but it seems it actually all belonged to the griefer. That's probably a candidate for removal, if they haven't been allowed back on.
The good thing about removing all these forgotten builds is that a griefer's build doesn't only claim the land it's on, but it also lays claim to the surrounding areas. Most people would probably think twice about building on or expanding near another person's build. Had it not been there, they would have been free to do so.
Your exactly correct. If I go onto a freebuild server, I want to see good, polished builds, not forgotten, crappy ones. I like your idea skoardy, but the recruit world could work too, maybe recruits can tp to the other world, but can't build there??? I don't know, I jut think it's necessary to keep build quality (especially near roads) high.

As I think on it more and more, creating a world for the sole purpose of promotion into the 'real world' seems like a whole lot of management on the staff's part. And these builds would be forgotten as soon the the users got into the real world. I'm thinking we just try to police banned builds as best we can.

I vote we have an area near spawn that recruits are restricted to, rather than making a new world (which could cause some lag issues that we definitely don't need.) Perhaps, to make the perms easier, we could put said area on a medium to large sized island. Since we have huge and large amounts of oceans, we could world edit an island somewhere in there too. Just my thoughts/suggestions.
While exploring (okay, okay, heading off in a single direction for days on end), I did think that it felt like a bit of a waste to just be travelling through miles and miles of ocean, no land in sight. Is it even possible to limit players to just a specific area.
Couple of thoughts though...
Would new players be able to gather enough resources? The island would need to be pretty vast and varied.
Once they've created their 'ticket off the island' build and escaped, is the build inaccessible to them?
Would current players be allowed on the island (seems like they shouldn't be, considering resources would be limited)
If they can't return, are the builds removed to make space for other new players?
What happens to any bits and bobs they've collected/stored during their first build?
Wouldn't there need to be another shop - since they wouldn't be able to access the existing one.
Would they be encouraged to use protection stones, even just for noob island.
How on Earth would we be able to stop ourselves from calling it noob island?
Not trying to shoot the idea down - it's just some stuff that occurred to me while pondering the suggestion.
These are all true and good points... especially the last one. Hmmm... Maybe not an island, but just an area around spawn? Or maybe just leave things the way they are and just have random spurts of "cleaning up" where we would /regen the chunk.

Agreed. This plan will keep us moving forward without creating a mountain of work in setup or maintenance. However, I love that we're thinking of ideas to make the server work more efficiently. Please keep them coming!
I think what we've got to boil this down to is what problems we are hoping to solve. Keeping new players away from the prime locations? Feels a bit icky to me, that one but okay. Keeping new players contained until they've created their first rank build? It'd stop griefers - apart from them being able to grief the available first rank builds, of course. What else does anybody think needs tackling?
As usual, I agree with Skoardy. Separation would alienate new users, and I fear that we would lose many good people.
I have seen this type of thing done before, and in some cases it works, others, not so much. I used to play on a server where you literally get creative mode, and I thought the separate worlds worked there. A flipped suggestion, (I am working on this for my cousins server) the '$+' donator rank could have access to a different world in which they could get creative mode in a certain plot(100x100). I am unsure of how to do this, I have seen it before though. Anyway, just my thoughts.
On a different note. In about 3 weeks, I am moving to the UK. Meaning I should be able to see a fair few of you way more often On a not so good side, I will not have my computer for over a month (I will still come on with mine chat) but these visits will be few and far between. I am aiming for Architect over the next two weeks that I still have my computer, but I am pretty busy at the moment. See you guys soon!

I'm sorry to hear that, Dozy - we'll see you soon, hopefully!
I must compliment you all - our forums have been a source of productivity, brain-storming, collaboration, and positivity. Thank you for being the great people you are!
I finally caved when it got progressively worse over the weekend. Ended up I couldn't do anything outside of the desktop since it would mean taking my eye off the card temp and it had a tendency to occasionally sprint for 120°C when I wasn't looking (at which point my PC would go boom-banga-bang). The fan operation was getting more intermittent meaning if I did something beyond 'idle' (watch a video, view a less simplistic flash-based site), temperatures would spike and there was a chance they wouldn't come down.
So, I managed to install a new card without blowing my PC up. Now, I'm just waiting for my new vid card to destroy my PC's probably inadequate power supply.
Still, its idling temperature is a lot lower than my old card (heck, apparently it's 'under load' temp is lower than my old card's idling temp). All in all it means I can get back to planning out my next build and soon, building it on the server.
That's great to hear, Skoardy. Is there a big difference in the age of you PC vs. your vid card?
Sorry to hear that? You're talking about the 'not-having-a-PC' bit, right, not the 'moving-to-the-UK' bit? It's not that bad here... mostly
Regarding creative mode - even though I do all my planning in creative single player first, I can't say I really miss it while playing on HT. One of the things I like about building on the server is knowing that everything is either sourced or 'paid for'. When I see someone else's build, I know they worked to get the materials together and that makes it 100% more impressive than just something somebody blarted out with unlimited blocks. No disrespect to staff who've created their own structures but I look a those types of builds and think "Well, it's nice but... it was free."
I just like that people put real work into their builds, not just from a design standpoint or chucking it up but the whole bricks & mortar thing. I suppose that's why I'm not too keen on when people start throwing free money around (naming no names... especially no relatives of the staff).
Just for the record, I was born in the UK
And I guess your right, creative might be a bit too much, and a whole lot of unwanted things could happen.
Can we move the "wilderness" warp a little (or a lot) further out? Or, perhaps make a "Wilderness2" Warp that is out pretty far away from spawn, this will solve a lot of "wur can I buld" questions we get from recruits

It's looking like we'll just try to keep a clean area for now then. Keep the ideas coming though
