Fallout: Shadows of the Old World is a Minecraft roleplaying server set in the Fallout universe, with a large focus on the area around Grand Island in New York, and Niagara.
The year is 2278. With slavers and raiders running rampant in the wasteland, the few civilized settlements are few and far between. In the eyes of many wastelanders, the only glimmers of safety and order lie in the hands of two groups; The Niagara Republic, a rapidly growing dictatorship that has laid claim to Niagara Falls, and the xenophobic, technological Brotherhood of Steel, who have declared their presence in the Niagara International Airport.
Players will have the opportunity to experience and explore the server's hand-crafted map, complete with a heavily modified version of the Last Days resource pack. Will you carve a name for yourself as one of the wasteland's greatest, or will you wind up dead in a ditch? How you proceed is entirely up to you!
Features:
A dynamic, constantly evolving world for players to explore!
A hand-crafted map, covering everything from Niagara Falls to Grand Island!
A dedicated staff team, with years of experience!
A well fitting, customized resource pack with lore friendly music and content!

Rules
General Rules
Assume that breaking any of the following rules will result in a ban.
Use Common Sense
Think carefully about your actions before carrying them out. How will your actions affect yourself and other people? Will it make or destroy roleplay for others?
No Modding
Exceptions include More Player Models (Don’t abuse it), Minimaps (That do not track players), and Optifine.
No Racism/Sexism
Racism and sexism will be punished based on the severity of the situation. Just keep it to yourself.
Both are tolerated while in-character.
No Griefing
If you wish to damage or destroy any builds or structures in-character, ask a member of the staff before doing so.
If you wish to break into another person’s house or room, ask for a staff member’s permission first.
Modifying Buildings is under the same rule as materials aren't freely available, message a member of staff if you're planning on doing so.
Respect Other Players
Refer to Rule #3.
Do not maliciously insult or swear at other players.
Stay In Character
Consider yourself in character at all times, and do not use it as an excuse to try and escape roleplay or the consequences of your actions.
Any items you have on your character are considered on your character.
This does not apply to certain locations, such as the spawn area.
Skype Rules
There are various Skype groups for the server. While not mandatory for most things, it’s strongly recommended that you join if you wish to stay constantly up to date. It also functions as a quick way to reach any staff members if you have any questions or concerns involving the server.
Use common sense when chatting or posting something in the chat. Will this affect any other players in a negative light maliciously? Does this contribute to the discussion? Is it entirely appropriate?
No racism or sexism. An occasional joke here and there might be okay, but keep it to an absolute minimum, and keep it strictly friendly.
Try to keep swearing to a minimum. While not strictly untolerated, it’s certainly not appreciated.
No links to graphic or malicious websites.
If uploading an image to the chat, use an approved image sharing website. This currently includes Imgur, Gyazo, Puush, and Lightshot (prnt.sc).
No directly attacking or calling out one another in the chat. Joking around is okay, but legitimate threats and insults are not tolerated at all.
Application Rules
There are three verdicts to your application.
Accepted -This means that your application has been approved by a whitelister, and that you are free to join the server once whitelisted.
Deferred - This means that your application was almost acceptable, but had a few issues present that warranted fixing. Rejected - This means that your application has been permanently denied, and that you are not eligible to reapply.
Failure to follow any of the following rules can result in your application being denied.
Try to keep your grammar's application tolerable.
Your whitelist application should be posted on the thread. Any other application should be messaged to a staff member.
You may apply with an alternate account to the server. However, your characters must avoid interaction if possible.
If applying as a character already in a faction, your whitelist application will require approval by both the whitelister and the faction leader. Joining in-character does not require an application.
If your character dies or otherwise leaves the server, then a new whitelist application is not necessary. However, you must send the outline of your new character to a staff member.
Roleplay Rules
Failure to follow the rules can result in the roleplay being voided.
No Powergaming
No forcing actions upon other players without their consent.
No doing unrealistic actions that your character would be incapable of.
No Metagaming
No letting OOC information influence your character’s decisions.
No giving other players information through OOC to influence that person’s IC decisions.
No Killing on Sight
Killing on sight will result in the offender being forced to void the entire encounter.
Use an Appropriate Skin
Your skin must fit the atmosphere of the server’s setting, as well as your character, appropriately.
No using skins of any sort of existing person or character.
Stealing
Stealing is allowed, but the person you are stealing from must be online, and you must have the skills and tools to do so in-character.
Slaves/Prisoners
Taking slaves or prisoners is allowed, either after they consent willingly to capture or are defeated in combat. However, holding a person for more than twelve hours without proper roleplay will result in their release.
Erotic Roleplay
Erotic roleplay on the server itself, or any of the group Skype chats will result in an automatic kick. Keep it to private messages. Rape, pedophilia, and necrophilia are outright intolerable, and will result in a permanent ban.
Fighting and Life/Death Rules
Fighting other players and dying are likely to happen at one point. These rules are to help new and old players determine the process for how to proceed before, during, and after fights.
Use common sense. Remember the rules on powergaming and metagaming, and keep insults in-character.
Do not kill other players on sight. It's expected that you at least roleplay at least a little bit before attacking.
Player-Versus-Player combat is expected to be handled through roleplaying, not through Minecraft fighting. This means that you are expected to act out each of your actions and responses to the other players in-character.
Fighting is turn-based. This means that you would emote your first action, then would let the other player respond in turn. If more than two players are fighting at once, then you must wait for their action as well.
Due to the setting of the server, killing another player does not always require their consent. However, it's expected that you have legitimate reasoning for doing so. If you ever feel like you've been unjustly killed, contact a staff member, and the situation will be reviewed and resolved.
Keep in mind the limits of your character's body and actions. A shot to the head will almost certainly kill you instantly, while jumping out of a two-story window might leave your legs broken or sprained.
Keep in line with how your character would act. A simple trader likely wouldn't go on a killing spree, nor would a child normally attempt to fight against a group of raiders alone.
Being an evil person simply for the sake of being evil is unacceptable. With the setting, it should be simple enough to think of a reasoning for your character acting that way.
Try to keep things fair for both parties. While circumstances could easily lead to one person having favorable conditions in a fight, remember to accept your character's limits, and understand when you should normally win and when you should not.
Crafting weapons OOCly is not acceptable.
Server Lore
Overview:
Niagara; a place once rich with beauty and romance, now reduced to a post-apocalyptic shadow of its former self. When the Great War consumed the world in nuclear fire, Niagara was left largely untouched, with only the nearby area affected by fallout from the nuclear crater in Buffalo. Much of its surrounding land remained usable, and the water, while certainly not sanitary, provided sufficient enough to drink without growing an extra limb from extreme radiation.
There were three nearby Vaults: Vault 91, Vault 96, and Vault 99. All provided sanctuary from the nuclear bombs, but weren't without their problems: Two of the vaults were hosts to grotesque experiments. Both ended in failure, and only the control vault, located within Niagara Falls, managed to continue on for several generations.
[More lore will gradually come, covering the various factions and locations!]
Factions
Brotherhood of Steel
Description
The Niagara Brotherhood of Steel are a splinter faction of the Midwestern Chapters. Currently centered in the Niagara International Airport, the Brotherhood are recognized for both their aggressive, self-centered attitude and their massive technological advantage over the Niagara Republic. However, their selective recruiting and xenophobic tendencies easily leaves them in the dust when compared to the Republic in size and manpower.
Their attitude towards wastelanders and politics could generally be considered neutral, though they're quick to become aggressive in the face of opposition, and aren’t afraid to resort to violence or extortion to achieve their goal.
Goals
The Brotherhood of Steel as a whole are focused on the preservation of pre-war technology, considering it far too dangerous or important for wastelanders to carry. As such, they remain neutral in most of the wasteland's ongoings, but are quick to retaliate against any other group they feel might threaten them.
Background
Some time ago, after the defeat of the Calculator in Kansas, the Brotherhood sent a recon force to the East to scout out the region. Ultimately, this recon force lost contact late into the expedition, and decided to settle down in an old civilian bunker at the Niagara International Airport. The Niagara Chapter kept close to their Midwestern ties, avoiding the East Coast's altruistic peacekeeping attitude, while avoiding the West Coast's isolationist attitude towards recruitment. Unfortunately, the Brotherhood stand in a precarious position. Losing contact with their old chapter left them with no shipments or reinforcements, and with a dwindling supply line, their only advantages are a technological edge and extremely vigorous training.
In 2277, the Brotherhood declared war against the Niagara Republic after failing they failed to reach the Brotherhood's demands. Initially optimistic that it would be a clean sweep, the Brotherhood were unpleasantly surprised by the Republic's resistance. And despite the massive technological gap, the Brotherhood only came away with little progress against the Republic, and only the slightest of advantages against the Republic's large numbers and guerilla tactics.
By the beginning of 2278, the Brotherhood have cooled off dramatically, now remaining mostly dormant in the Airport while attempting to rebuild their numbers to finally give themselves the necessary edge against the Republic. Only a few patrols visit the nearby settlements, and only then to scrounge for technology or attempt to recruit new Initiates.
The Niagara Republic
Description
The Niagara Republic is the current organization that resides within Niagara Falls. Originally coming from Vault 96, the Niagara Republic is renowned around the wasteland, known for its incredible defense and comfortable living conditions. However, those inside the city speak a different story; Telling how the Republic is rife with political and militaristic corruption alike, and the harsh curfews and routines, with a few speaking of even darker going-ons the further you look.
Despite these rumors, the Niagara Republic attempts to keep a positive relationship with the few settlements in the area, often sending diplomatic parties and scouts to help sweep up the area of raiders and slavers. However, since the incident with the Brotherhood in 2277, these patrols have become far less commonplace and much larger in size.
Goals
The Niagara Republic's goals are fairly mundane; they strive to take full control over the city of Niagara, and eventually expand their influence to cover the entire surrounding area. Along the way, they strive to make Niagara a safe place for any wastelanders, and to defend their territories with extreme efficiency.
Background
The Niagara Republic stems from Vault 96, a control vault within the city of Niagara Falls. When the vault opened for the first time, hundreds of inhabitants emerged, eager to see the world above for the first time.
When the surface proved far more hostile than they had expected, the inhabitants were quick to resolve themselves into a small, Dweller-dominated population ruled over by their current Overseer. When he died, his young son took his place as their new leader, and was quick to prove himself as ill-suited for the position. Thanks to mismanagement and short-sighted policies, the people grew unhappy with him, and he was ultimately overthrown in a military coup. A new President was selected, one of the leaders of the coup.
Under the reign of its new President, the town opened its doors to the wasteland's denizens. However, the influx of new people introduced its own danger. Crime skyrocketed, and seeing thieves and murderers stalking the streets became commonplace. From this, a new organization was established by the President; the Niagara Defense Force was formed, designed to protect the Republic and scout out nearby settlements.
Since then, the Republic's population and overall conditions have improved substantially, and the Defense Force became something of a living legend, with many bands of raiders perishing under hails of gunfire.
When war broke out with the Brotherhood of Steel, the Republic were quick to adopt a conservative stance, retreating the bulk of their military force to within the city's borders. They ceased sending patrols and scouts beyond their limits, refusing to engage the Brotherhood in open warfare. Since then, the Republic has remained much more cautious of accepting new visitors and traders within their borders, and being questioned or searched in the streets has become much more commonplace.
