I've been waiting a day or so before sounding the funeral bells to make sure this decision was permanent, and it looks like it is.
ANVIL, the server and effectively the group, is shutting down. The events that transpired yesterday essentially hastened the fact that the server was likely going to be officially down past the 27th of August. For a bit of information, one member of the team killed every entity in the world, including the main entity that stores all important information (information like what games were going on, which maps the players were in, that sort of important stuff). This has always been a big no-no and after GitOut confronted the perpetrator about it decided that he would not re-open the server. Prior to this event GitOut had already made clear that he only supported the server because of a hatred towards giving up on a project and not for any of the tenents ANVIL was built on, to be a great if not the best vanilla minigames server.
This wasn't a rash move on GitOut's part, minecraft bugs have been plaguing server activities for months with no sign of alleviation, hampering progress and generally being a drag. That combined with a few other reasons led us to deciding the server should be shut down, but that wasn't planned, well by me, fredo, at least, until the domain expired. This is where the 50/50 comes in, from whether or not we should renew the domain, which in turn stems from many staff being inactive, the team in general being a bit disjointed and incohesive, and some active staff withdrawing support for keeping the server up all led to that questionable ground: Should we even bother? The domain expiration was a convenient stopping point, but of course the shutdown ending up being expedited due to the reasons above.
So, this is farewell, I'm not going to bother leaving a personal note like I did when TBG, ANVIL's predecessor, shut down, as my sentiments are much the same if not a bit edged with more bitterness. It's evident to me now that running a minigames server is no joke for a group of people who don't plan to do it professionally. As staff we tend to like to joke around with our players and have a more relaxed atmosphere, one of the big things about ANVIL is that it is not a business. But unfortunately small servers need a tight community to run, ANVIL as a minigames server would have needed to be much larger to maintain (obviously a bunch of other problems would have to be resolved but I feel that is a big one), and it didn't mesh well with the what we tried to do. Vanilla minigames serve better as downloadable maps, not servers.
Of course that may not be necessarily true in all cases, but in ours I think it was, and to reiterate I think we'd have to be much larger and more 'professional' to really succeed. But I'm glad we weren't because I loved what ANVIL tried to be, as much as there were some players that gave the staff a lot of grief I held out for those who didn't and Im going to try and remember the better things.
And as an end to this melancholic and what minihilly will later tell me as a long farewell, yes I plan on releasing the ANVIL map, which will be a recent update. Disclaimer, not all minigames may be 100% functional, and there is not going to be any support for the map, either. The redstone text files may be released along with the map, but don't get your hopes up. The map will be posted to the maps forum, and anyone who PMs this account asking for a notification of when that happens will get a link when I do post it.
Goodbye.

I liked what the server tried to be too... I wish it hadn't shut down, but I guess that's how it goes.
I'll enjoy learning more about redstone tricks (without even bothering Git!) by looking at the command blocks...
I hope the former staff team still stays together and makes maps, they did an excellent job on the server, while it lasted.
And you can say that redstone minigames are better as downloadable maps
all you want.. but I like it on a server, where people I don't know IRL
are playing too, and ANVIL had a good community.
Also, to say I'd like to "toast" to the server's good times... but I'm 13, not 21, underage and don't wanna be an alcoholic >:B
P.S. I don't usually do squishy crap, but...
minihilly, keep being rude, hillarious, and strict
fredo, u better not stop being a jackass of all trades >:I
and GitOut, keep making people wonder "how the hell did he do this..." with yo redstone xD
P.P.S. Thanks, for not being "professionalists", I think being screwballs on the server was much better than the retards that call themselves pros, and would have probably made the server shut down even sooner.
You are all amazing, ANVIL was amazing, I loved ANVIL and I know my friends did too. I was going to play on it last night and saw it was down and I had a bad feeling something happened. I am sorry for why ANVIL is coming to an end, but know that you brought a lot of joy and entertainment to a lot of Minecraft Players' lives!

Thank you for your kind messages, unfortunately, the mood in the staff wasn't at its best, and I think fredo made a good summary of what led to this closure. The server was what kept us together and with our failed/cancelled projects, I'm not sure we'll stay together after that sadly. This was a great adventure and I was proud to be part of the staff. I'll remember the good times we had on the server.

Here is a link to the map download for all interested. Please note no support will be given for any problems arising from use of this map, I (fredo) am the only person available to reach for anything related to ANVIL and am not in a position where I can help you given the nature on how redstone was made. The redstone.txt files will not be released at this time.
I didn't get to formally say my appreciation, but now's better than never.
This, hands down, is one of the best servers ever. Normally I hate lots of servers, but this was good enough to be the 2nd best server on my list ever
The fact that it was in Vanilla Minecraft drew me into it, and I honestly think it's amazing that you all managed to put together such a thing as ANVIL.
I don't really have much to say, except that I'll miss the server and the community. So, to all the staff, I hope to see you sometime in the future doing something nice.

For the sake of the former ANVIL staff, I will not be going into detail about the specifics that closed the server. As for rebooting ANVIL-MC, I'd be lying if I didn't say it's on the books. I doubt it would happen anytime soon (if at all!) as we have a number of problems that prevent us from starting a new server that aren't going to be resolved over night. I appreciate the enthusiasm however and, I (fredo) was sad to see ANVIL go. But for now, the staff are retired and pursuing their own activities. We're all kind of taking a (potentially indefinite) break. I myself have another project that I'm working on that prevents me at the moment from doing much minecraft related.
If the server is gonna be shut down, will the world it's in at least be released to the public as a download?
Check my Twitter here for absolutely nothing.
What bvyans said... and even if the server's shut down, I'll still miss the people :\
EDIT: also, what happened that made it a 50/50 chance that the server's shutting down? D:

Well, it was very upsetting to see the server go... but what's more important is the
memory's we make out of it while it was alive. I'd just like to say, that it's been a blast
playing on anvil, it was a really good server that stand out to others and the fun that I
had from playing on it. I wish everyone who has played on anvil good luck
for their future in finding another server as good as anvil was, The map of anvil will be a memory
that I'll always have in mind, and won't regret at all playing on the server as much as I did before.
I'll play any maps that anvil has to offer to us and will remember anvil when it was alive. Thank you
to all the staff for creating such an amazing server while it lasted, your hard work won't go unrecognized,
as I appreciate how much effort you guys done, again thank you for being an awesome server and
goodbye to all of the anvil staff and the community.
-sincerely Logical_cyclops, Adios mi amigos! tenga buenas suerte.

Yes, the website will be shut down. It along with the server was hosted by GitOut.
And thanks everyone for the condolences!

Had fun times.
It's sad to see this server go. It was probably one of my favorite minigames servers of all time.
