So a lot of people seem to like Minecraft Realms, and I have no idea why because it really is quite bad compared to other servers. To prove this, lets compare it to MCProHosting. (Not using them as an advertisement or anything, but it is the only hosting service I have experience with.)
To be fair, I have not used Minecraft Realms, only read the facts on the Minecraft website. I also want to make it clear that I am not saying it is bad, just that it isn't good compared to other hosting services. Now thats's over with, let's get to the point.
Here is a comparison chart between mcprohosting and relams.
MCProHosting:
1. 6 dollars per month plan that hosts a recommended 18 players.
2. An unlimited number of players can access the server if you want.
3. You can whitelist so that only a few can join as well.
4. It is extremely easy to use.
5. You can add a ton of bukkit plugins.
6. You can add modpacks like feed the beast.
7. You can further customize your server with maximum height and disabling the nether among other options.
8. You have 13 plans to chose from. 5 to an unlimited number of players and 2.50 to 80 dollars a month.
Realms:
1. 13 dollar per month plan that hosts 10 players.
2. Maximum of 20 players who have access to your server.
3. You are forced to whitelist so that only a few can join.
4. It is extremely easy to use
5. No plugins at all.
6. You can't add modpacks.
7. You might be able to customize your server, but it doesn't say so I don't know.
8. You have technically a few plans, but they only vary in cost and time period, not number of players or RAM.
This really frustrates me because I feel like Mojang is taking advantage of their young player base. It can be seen as helping them by providing an easy to use server hosting program, but there are lots of others that may be even easier to use and are MUCH cheaper for a MUCH better server with MUCH less downtime. This is a whole other topic, but has anyone noticed how this game takes less than a few minutes to download when most other games this expensive take an hour or two, maybe even more? I think people need to be open to the possibility that Mojang is far from perfect and should step it up. Sure, Minecraft is a very fun game, but it is also the glitchiest, laggiest, poorest quality game out there for 27 bucks. What do you think? Is Mojang really doing all it should be doing?
Of course Mojang is taking advantage of it's very young player base, what would you do if you were selling a game for 10$, and you get the same amount of sales when you sell it for 20$. You'd sell it for 20$. So, I understand Mojang. Some people are stupid enough to buy Realms, that's another 10$ a month for Mojang. They don't care what we think, they just want their money. Yes, in the early stages, Notch did everything that the community wanted, but now, they're just doing nothing and the money is still flowing in their pockets.
Haha exactly, but if I were in their position I would make a seriously epic game with tens of millions of free cash. Of course they are only working hard enough on an occasional snapshot to keep people interested, when they could be making Minecraft 2.0 or actually adding a real lighting engine or maybe adding that mod api or perhaps doing at least SOMETHING with the ender dragon egg. The community has literally done better than Mojang ever could would, heck, Mojang even needed help building a dumb horse that should have been in the game to start with. I don't know, taking advantage of the community like this is just wrong when they practically worship you blindly.
I agree with you that server hosting is much better... ...without the exception that some people need to buy support e.g. bukkit plugin support, modpack support. But if you don't need this support server hosting is the way to go. If you need the help, It depends on your budget at that one moment. Also, you know how it says realms has a whitelist, well servers have them too! You also can't ban or op people in game! In my opinion go with server hosting.
I am very late to the party but for anybody who sees this post and looks at the example the OP used, and thinks they may use that specific server-hoster I don't think MCProHosting is a great example anymore. It's a bit of a rip off considering that the prices they show include, (I believe) minimal support, no backups, no mods, NO SECURITY (DDOS, e.t.c.),fixed player limits (they do give more than what your RAM can handle, but that doesn't mean it's not limited, unlike, I don't know, ApexMC), and if you want a cheap price, you have to pay for a full year (so in reality, you aren't actually paying $4, you're paying $48). Sure you do still get all the time for that money, but if things go south, you won't be cancelling any time soon, so you must continue to pay. So at the end of all of this; you essentially are forced to pay vast amounts more than what they list, to get things that are essential to have an actual server, otherwise, your server may definitely suck.
I kind of actually agree with this. i run a realm And for a point in time the starter kit and other command blocks stop working cause of somthing on the realm a lot of hackers can come in and distroy it but i actually think it's a fun experience cause instead of playing on a world alone you can play with others and watch people grow and have fun
