I wouldn't mind being either a builder, farmer, worker, or tradesmen.
7. How many hours a day can you be on for?
I can play for about 5 hours a day.
8.A brief (1-3 sentences) description of your role play character (Recommended)?
Raised by a pack of wolves, little ceezhaJ was caught stealing by The Republic of Atlas. He was thrown in jail, but then broke out with only a stick and a shoelace. He is now on the hunt for a job with the people that he's always admired, The Grand Spencorian Empire.

Thank you for your application, but in order to be properly accepted, you must include at least 5 permits that you would desire from the Production class area under Occupations. Once that is done and added to you app, then you will be readily accepted my friend.
Just a thought, capitalism isn't just an economic system it's a social system as well, where the means of production are controlled by capital (wealth), capitalism also entails absolute respect of private property. Some of the things your "empire" represents are absolutely incompatible with capitalism.
A professional standing army (this creates a monopoly of force in favor of the state)
A permit system for occupations (ask yourself if in a "free" society, you need a permit to chop a tree? Isn't that just more bureaucracy)
Your system puts way too much power into the hands of governors optimates, and the emperor especially. In a capitalist society, absolute power lies in the hands of the market (not the bureaucracy) and consequently the people of the empire.
The society you've created (especially with the creation of a separate capitalist class) is more reminiscent of syndicalism, and mercantilism, in planned economies in the 1800's.
It's thrilling to take part in a market based society within a videogame, one with a thriving economy. However it's not so fun to take orders from an "Empire" when you just want to build cool stuff with other people.
The permit system: The reason we have permits is to prevent citizens and optimates from doing all of the work. By people like me, being forced to employ employees to gain the most money, creates a flow of cash. If I could just do all my production myself, with no requirements for staff, there would be much less money going around to other people in the empire.
The navy is there to protect the citizens. Can you honestly tell me, what good nation would not train up its warriors, and when the need be to defend the cities, the inexperienced soldiers would crumble like leaves before the wind?
Orders.. yes, well, you could go, get a permit for mining, and sell stuff to people like me, but where's your guaranteed wage? I pay my employees a certain wage, where you will gain more for working more. I give my employees a lot of leeway, if you want to farm, farm from my fields, want to mine, afk on my cobble generators (best way for your to gain money), want to kill, get me string, ill pay you handsomely.
The Optimates don't have that much extra power. We vote on laws, that's all we do currently. That will be the job of the senators once they are elected. The emperor sets restriction on things, such as a out of place dirt house in the middle of the city is off limits.
My friend, I thank you for coming to the Empire's page and submitting your opinion. It is nice to see when individuals are freely thinking for themselves and pose questions towards such systems that they find confusing. I do, however, believe you have made various errors in your assumptions about the Spencorian state.
A professional standing army (the Grand Spencorian Navy) is indicative in every civilized and well maintained state on the planet earth. It is logical that, in order to provide for the defense of a territory or nation, that such forces be arranged so as to prevent any invading bodies into such a state, and to secure the internal state of such a territory if civil disputes of an compromisingly negative nature are to arise. The Navy, in the case of the GsE, play zero role in the politics and economy of the GsE directly. The good members of the Navy are, in fact, often being asked if they would like to join some of the private companies which are present within the GsE, completely uncontrolled by the government.
The permit system is akin to the modern system of permits in all capitalist states. Think for a moment about the modern state of business creation. In all capitalistic states, if one wishes to establish a business for themselves, they require water permits, electricity permits, land permits, etc, followed by regular inspections by the local and/or national government. Within the Empire, one is, in fact, more free to create a business as they only need to procure the necessary permits to produce certain goods (such as an alcohol permit would be in many civilized nations of the world). Land in the Empire is free of charge and always readily available to be consumed. Individuals simply have to adhere to a building code, common also in all capitalistic states.
Power which is present in the hands of the Optimates and Governors is, again, akin to that of many of the most famous capitalistic states. The Optimates essentially fill the role of the Congress of the United States of America at the moment (until the Senate is put in place - of which an announcement will be made on shortly). The only item differing in their role to that of traditional capitalistic states is that they are chosen by the Imperial government. The reason behind this maneuver is not economically nor socially motivated however. It is done so as to dis-allow any secretly rebellious or corruptible individuals from ascending to a high rank within the Empire, as has happened before in Imperial history - entirely unrelated to the economic or social standing of the Empire.
You appear to be in err at this point my friend, when you say that "absolute power lies in the hands of the market" where, in truth, that is a half false statement. Socially and economically this is true, as is the case with the Empire, but ultimate authority does not lie in the wealthiest businessman. If such logic were to be followed, Bill Gates would be the president of the United States and Carlos Slim the president of Mexico. Significant authority rests in the beautiful hands of the market, but not absolute authority.
The class of 'capitalist' is more-or-less a badge of honor for the individual. Thinking logistically however, similar individuals who own more than one business have similar titles within their own setting (to this point I refer to the multi-business controlling business of Bain Capital and the individual Mitt Romney before he left to run the winter Olympics in 2002). Granted, it is not normal for capitalistic nations to have a government recognition of such stellar achievements, however, on a social level, it is important to the Empire that individuals who have achieved such high capitalistic sense to acquire and control more than one business be honored in some fashion.
It is worth noting as well that all these points you have made have been done without experiencing the Empire itself. You have not seen our cities nor the vast wealth that our individual citizens have gained for themselves by their own devises. Most of the stone that is present in our capital of Origo was purchased from a local stone company. A new business started by our very own Barchelous is avidly in search of workers to fill its ranks. The economic potential and output of the Empire is higher than ever.
Boremierius brings up a good point as well, the government is essentially in place to allow for the development and encouragement of such businesses. If you wish to build something in the Empire, you have all the power in the universe to do so. You may even create for yourself an entire city! This is not restricted. Practicality states however that you would not want a wooden cube in the heart of a capital in renaissance, and so a singular permit for building exists. After one procures such a permit by demonstrating their building skills, they may build what they want where they want, so long as it follows the building rules of the Empire and the city (a factor common to many modern capitalist states). It is more than worth noting additionally that the Empire does not 'order' you at any point to do anything. If you are not in the military, you are free to live as you so desire within the GsE. I absolutely detest the thought of the government having any hand in the private life of the non-military citizenry, and so, it has never been done and nor shall it ever be done.
I would like to make a final point clear as well, this post was made - albeit very lengthy - in order to fully explain something that I have been wanting to for a while. You, Mr. ProcessCyan, have astutely raised perfectly valid queries that I am overjoyed to see have been asked. This post, in all of its lack of brevity, was not made in anger, angst, or any other form of negative action against you. It was merely made to explain - in full - the position of the Empire on these issues.
Knowing this, I encourage you, submit and application for the GsE! You have shown that you are not afraid to ask questions and I have always welcomed that mentality with open arms. I look forward to speaking with you more in the near future.
I would also like to point out that even the poor have just as much power as the rich. A few people who have barley made a single dinar, have came up with some of the most wonderful ideas for this empire, which all have loved. For example, I run a tavern which relies on a plugin suggested by a poor man, (I cannot remember who) and we all love that plugin. In fact, a lot of my business comes form other clans, who play a large role in the economy of this clan. We also have two dungeons, both made by people outside the government. As far as I know they have made no money off them, even though it is very well possible to charge admission fees.

I'd love to spend some time with your clan, unfortunately I don't think I could become a citizen as I'm currently committed to my own server as well as some school obligations.
However I would love to collaborate and consult with you guys, and you're of course welcome to set up an outpost on my server (which I also try to run according to laiser-faire principles) and perhaps I could set up a trade depot on your server as well (as a foreigner).
Here's my application
1.Your In game name (Minecraft username) argamemnon 2. Skype (required) and Steam name (Optional) (PM me for my skype name) my steam name is darth_n374 3.Age 22 4.What can you do to help the Grand Spencorian Empire Prosper? I'd like to act as a foreigner, as a tradesman. Yes I'm aware of how permits work. 7. How many hours a day can you be on for? 1 - 2 hours a day max 8.A brief (1-3 sentences) description of your role play character (Recommended)? Francisco Ponce De Lion is many things, explorer, builder, conquistador, pirate, advisor to kings, and lover of women, above all though Francisco seeks riches in the form of gold. An emissary from a land far to the west Francisco has roamed the ocean for many years, in search of his fortune. 9. Have you been apart of any other clans? If so, which one(s)? Yes. If the city and towns I have built on my server count as a clan, even if we aren't a clan we're a coalition and my loyalty lies with enriching the community of my server. 10. Why did you choose the Grand Spencorian Empire? I love capitalism. Seriously that's about it, I think a free economy leads to free people and I've been looking for a place where I can practice my beliefs in the marketplace.
All of you guys made some great points in your posts, and it's great that you've created an environment of political discourse within your empire.
Here's my rebuttals:
A standing army One of the greatest Capitalist states on earth did not win it's war for independence with a standing army, this is of course the United States, which employed a militia during the war for independence to great effect. If you have the advantage of terrain (your homeland) it would perhaps be advisable to employ a militia or perhaps a professional fighting force (mercenaries) instead of holding a standing army. It would certainly be more cost effective. Another example of course is the effectiveness of the Landsknechts in switzerland.
A permit System
I've struggled with this on my own server, particularly mediating building permits. Nobody wants ugly buildings on their server... least of all myself. But I think I'd rather have an environment where the people of the server feel free to build and create free of restriction baring a few rules. On my server the rules governing property are unspoken but are as follows.
1)Do not build where other people have built things, if you get too close ask the land owner for permission.
2)The landowner reserves the right to dictate what is built on property (this rule only really dictates property within the market area).
3)A structure left abandoned and incomplete long enough is no longer the property of the owner.
4)Structures like 1 towers and temporary shelters can be destroyed to make place for a more permanent residence
5)Disputes are mediated in public and decision is based on consensus
Expanding the economy is important but there's ways to do it without artificially enforcing monopolies through licensing, for instance land ownership is a great way to regulate economic activity. You can't mine/farm/chop trees unless you have the land on which to do so. Capitalism has also historically relied on innovation (look at Brazilian capitalism where 1/3 of the population is self employed), efficient processes are more important to capitalists than jobs, as society relies on the accumulation of capital. It's tough to create monopolies on primary industries without restricting the freedoms of the citizenry, however to stay competitive in the marketplace it's often beneficial to incorporate looking for example a person who wished to wholesale Enchanted Diamond Armor would rather deal with diamond wholesalers (who could offer a lower price) and enchantment wholesalers (who could deal with more consistency) than free agents in the marketplace. The diamond wholesaler and the enchantment wholesalers could also offer an advantage to their employee's as opposed to being a free agent as they could provide a level wage. The important part here is choice, deciding you want to be an enchanter is different than being permitted to do it.
Absolute power within the govt.
I was referring to an ideal “capitalist” society, but the most recent trend within America is dominance of capital, for instance banks that are “too big to fail” and are thus propped up by the govt, In the future especially with the distributed nature of the internet, more power is likely going to held by corporations and smaller groups of citizens. The government in the US and Canada is also really controlled by the Market, powerful lobbies control elections and the best funded candidate usually succeeds (at least in the primaries).
Again, not trying to sound preachy or anything. I just love talking about stuff like this I'm not even in Poli-Sci I'm actually studying design. Send me a PM for my servers IP if you guys are interested in pursuing a trade/consultation relationship.
