Hi everyone. I have a minecraft server where the world size is limited to 500x500 blocks wide. The aim of the game is to build a base, raid other players bases, fight each other, and become the most powerful players on the server. I use barrier blocks to prevent players going outside this perimeter. I have a problem though.
The minecraft server is quite laggy/slow, and seeing as it was designed for 6 players (I've never had that many players join though) and my excessive use of command blocks use, due to lack of plugins, I presume is the reason for players having trouble loading there chunks.
You know the minecraft glich when you die and respawn/teleport/reconnect, sometimes the chunks take a few seconds to render and you can see into the ground sought of like if your in spectator mode? That glitch has happened to a few players that play on my server yet it has never happened to me.
Due to this glitch happening often to the players, they use it to there advantage and disconnect/reconnect really often to look for players bases. This gives them a massive unfair advantage.
These players use laptops that are... Not in the best spec, so I might be wrong it may not be the server being responsible for the glitches. If so then the map won't work and I'll have to abandon the developing idea.
Decrease the Chunk Providing distance of your Server which should be in the server.properties named "view-distance"
Could you please explain this to me? I've got a bad habit of avoiding plugins/functions/texture packs and stuff like that, that needs to be editored inside world folders.
It's inside your Server folder, the file named server.properties. Just open it with an Text Editor and change the line named "view-distance=..." to a lower number, for example view-distance=6
Ok thanks for this, I'm onto it now. What exactly will this do though?

From the Minecraft wiki, the view-distance attribute in server.properties means: Sets the amount of world data the server sends the client, measured in chunks in each direction of the player (radius, not diameter). It determines the server-side viewing distance. (see Render distance) 10 is the default/recommended.
There are many things that could attribute to your players' chunk loading errors. Could be your server doesn't have enough RAM dedicated to it, so it cannot process the chunk data and send it to your players fast enough. It could be you are using a faulty .jar (if you are using another such as Bukki/Spigot), incompatible mods can also cause rendering issues, slow internet connection server-side OR client-side (if the player's internet isn't that great, or their computer hardware, their systems will struggle to load the chunks and there is no way to fix that.)
If lowering the view distance doesn't correct the issue; check for server overload errors in your console.
If are you using plugins, check console for plugin errors, try removing all plugins and see if the issue persists. If it does not, add your plugins one by one until you start having issues and you've found the culprit.
If you are using a dedicated server host, maybe consider upgrading to a higher tier that offers more RAM.
You mentioned some of your players use poor spec laptops. Are they the only players on your server experiencing issues? That's another aspect to check. If most of your players are running the server fine but a select few are having render issues, you might nudge them in the direction of client-side modification for resolving their render issues (i.e. installing optifine). There isn't really much you could do on your end as far as optimization for your players who have low end PC's, unfortunately.
Also, you shouldn't need to lower your view distance any more than 10. You can, but it wouldn't make a huge difference on render time, simply how far chunks are 'remembered' by the server.

Do you have any suggestions?
how do you server configure?
