Just as the title says, is it possible to get hacked hosting a minecraft server? I am using HAMACHI as i know that is a safe way to host, Asking this as i am wanting to host a server but parents are like "Idk! Someone in the world could hack it if they know how!" And i know, its logical, theres someone out there with the knowhow to hack into your computer but i just want to know, maby by a staff<--- so that i get real proof, Thanks! *And no comments like Coolstorybro! or anything, i just want an honest answer, i know this sounds a bit weird but i am hoping that people see this, and if there is the possibility it to be known. Thanks!
Yeah, the person who's concerned is the one who is our computer person >.> They believe you will get a virus from everything kinda, so it's just a concern, i've never heard of it, but there like "YOU'LL GET HACKED CUZ THERE USING UR IP AND KNOWING UR IP MEENS THEY CONTROL UR COMP!" and i try to explain but i dont know how to exactly explain it?
Real life isn't Hollywood, hackers do not hack pentagon supercomputers by typing a few commands (CSI anyone? :biggrin.gif: ). It is much more complicated in real life and if you have a router with STI firewall and no viruses that you downloaded yourself you should be safe. No real hacker would bother with your server/PC unless it has valuable data on it.
That said, Hamachi is a VPN software which creates a direct virtual link between two or more computers. As you imagine, this goes through your firewall and is a huge security risk. You're better off portforwarding and hosting the server without Hamachi.
Unlikely for him to be hacked by players on a private Hamachi network.
So, if I set up my hamachi server on a private network for some friends and me, I won't increase the likelihood of being hacked beyond simply being on the Internet?
Every network is hackable, no matter how secure. Will it happen to you? Probably not, the amount of work and equipment it would take just wouldn't be worth it, unless you have a lot of enemies I guess
Nobody would want to spend the time to hack into a Minecraft server on your home network. Most people get hacked by going to some sort of website that has a bad advertisement, some sort of Adobe Flash exploit, or anything like that.
Yes, you're more vulnerable to hacking attempts when you host a server because you may become a target for revenge hacking (griefers or players who get mad for one reason or another and want to take it out by attacking the server).
It's particularly important to keep all of your software up to date, run a properly configured firewall that blocks all ports except for the ones you need open to the public, and password the administrative account on your computer (this is the one you see when you boot into safe mode).
Being the victim of a targeted hack is still remotely small. Your biggest threat will still be user errors from within the network, and external viruses designed to target new security vulnerabilities.
The run-of-the-mill virus can often be removed by antivirus utilities, but a targeted attack will be using custom code designed to evade antiviral and antispyware utilities.
The best way to recover from a successful targeted intrusion and compromise is to reformat affected computers and restore them with a clean backup.
Welcome to the world of computer and internet security. Just like in real life, you can mitigate most dangers by being careful and prepared, but there's always that chance something will happen you couldn't avoid, such is life.

1) Signatures, 2) Irony, 3) Lists
