First off, I know a bunch of people have tried to make "better" glass, which is usually 100% transparency in the middle with a glaring solid border around it, which really makes it look like glass surrounded by rubber. That might be fine for certain situations, but TBH I'm not that impressed with it.
I assume Minecraft can't do things like actually make the glass reflective / shiny based on the light hitting it? All it can do is draw the 16x16 textures, with the brightness based on local lighting values, and that's it? And that there's no way to have translucency/alpha in the textures?
Assuming the above, I'm still thinking there has to be a better compromise between the base glass (which has way too many lines/dots) and the "better" textures (which have unbroken borders and no dots.) What about less dots/lines and no borders, or less dots/lines and broken/organic borders? Has anyone come up with anything that looks good?
For the record, I've made a giant glass structure and that's the reason I am looking for this. It looks... crappy. If I used the hard-border packs then it would just look like a giant scaffolding. Was hoping for some texture to make a large contiguous glass structure look somewhat good.
That's the best we can do with the current coding in minecraft, CTM (connective textures mod) allows for *some* variation, but it's a hassle to texture most of the time and doesn't work with vanilla minecraft. I'm afraid you're stuck with what notch left us with as far as glass goes, sorry.
Hmm. Well, I've noticed that the clouds in the game can do partial transparency. So I have to imagine that the engine is capable of it in terms of glass... I guess it isn't high on his priority list to add though.
Have you seen any other attempts at the kind of glass I'm talking about though? With not too many dots and without a solid "caulking" border? I could just start trying to mess around with the texture manually but I figured maybe someone had already succeeded at achieving this.
BTW here's a pic of my completed glass tower. It's really cool but I was hoping I could make it look better.
