I know people have made hundreds of these before, but I figured I should give them a go. As per the usual, I used pistons.
Here's a 7-segment display:
I think I managed to make it pretty small, and it's set up here as a counter. The brown circuit in the back is for daisy-chaining 2 of them together like I did here.
Here's a very square-looking 16 segment display:
I included the dot for punctuation, so that's why there's a little bulge out the bottom.
I hooked it up to the biggest piston feed-tape I could build just so it could cycle through as many characters as possible, but if you wanted it smaller and didn't need to display quite so many characters you could easily scale back the feed-tape size.
Matrix in the form of a 4×4 vertical column, this is interesting. I wanted to create something similar, but a large number of pistons stopped this idea)... Therefore, I decided on a seven-segment counter with 13 pistons and dimensions of 7×5×9. Found from the Internet and refined the mechanism, now it does not jam on the lower segment and the rotation of the matrix is faster. Later I will record a video and post it.
I think I first saw a piston-powered display from CNBMinecraft with his digital clocks. He used a horizontal piston feed-tape if I recall correctly. Vertical just seemed to save more space.
Yes, although I do not know the nickname of this respected person, but the mechanism is very good. The lamp panel is only 3×5... This was informative, and it took time to improve and make it more effective. Now, when you set the button and press, the latter does not have time to return to the starting position after pressing, and the mechanism already completes all movements.
