If your punch does better, that clearly means you are spam-clicking (that is, swinging so fast the cooldown timer doesn't have a chance to fill back up).
Go into video settings and turn on the option that shows the cooldown timer on the cursor or the hotbar, it will help you better judge when to attack.
Does anyone know the numbers or formulas for health and damage in 1.9?
I looked on the wiki, but most of the numbers there are wrong (I tested by hand and got very different results).
Especially for how armor works?

Why do you need to know?
I don't need to know how it works, I just want to.
Although knowing exactly how armor works would be useful for survival in general.
That's why I've started a youtube series on it.

In fact, I found that under certain circumstances, my punch does better dps than a sharpness 5 diamond sword.

No, with a strength 2 potion, my punch does 3.5 hearts.
A full power punch happens 4 times per second.
Making 14 hearts of damage per second.
The diamond sword does about 8 hearts.
Times 1.6 swings per second makes only about 13 hearts per second.
