That's not the point. Keeping a rounded, educated population is the point. Maybe if we had a way to educate people more individually we'd get a more specialized and efficient curriculum, but we currently don't. There's only so many teachers for so many students.
Aren't you going to give a simpler way of showing e=mc2 without using algebra?
The energy released upon the destruction of matter is the mass of the matter cubed squared.
...
Actually, no, that's even more complicated.

Show me a situation where Algebra works and is not rendered obsolete by a simpler, faster method, and I'll show you a pink elephant.
Calculating taxes and sales. You'd be amazed how the proper ordering of sales that you can collect can eek you a ton of cash, if you simply know enough to realize it.
Why do we? there is so many things in school we will never use... yet we learn it. also why do we have grade? All it does to people who get bad grades is make there self-esteem. What are your thoughts on this? Sure English is needed and simple math... but you know
Finally, someone else has actually thought of this! Thank you! I think that there are things that I reckon useless, and I know myself that I haven't used! There are about 3 subjects at my school that are largely useless for me because it was already taught to me at primary school! Like the issue of bullying! I've had it hammered into me for 7 long years, then I have to go through the whole tortuous cycle again! What's the point if we're going over something that we can't possibly forget?! It's like the teachers don't think that we students had actually learnt ANYTHING in primary. I'm just sick of it that they have to "re-teach" us on subjects that we already know! Thanks thebaum64 for letting me finally let this frustration go. Kudos to you.
(Image void in a month so look quickly.) Pic from ask.com, I know, but it's true whether or not the site seems like a bad one to quote.
Learning is fun, the more you know and the better grades you have, the better chances you have of getting a well-paying job, which is another reason you go to school.
also that is basic.... like i said all you need is the basics

Did you mean learning things such as trigonometry, or calculus? That stuff will hardly get you through life, but things like algebra and geography are a must.
Teachers don't think about the future. For example, your 2nd grade teacher may say you will carry a ton of books on your back, but now it won't happen. We will be carrying iPads. Teachers automatically assume the future wont change.
We will be carrying iPads
I'd rather have the books.

Many professional fields require extensive understanding of both algebra, trigonometry and calculus. The sciences are filled to the brim with all three. How many jobs need you to use/understand graphs? Algebra and calculus; vital for that. I know in my major (geology) we use trigonometry a hell of a lot for mapping bedding layers and calculus for radiometric dating, as well as algebra in the dozens of formulae for all sorts of things from seismology to hydrology to sedimentology... I can't say for certain where else these skills will pop up in your life, but I sure as hell know there's nothing they teach as school that a reasonable amount of people will actually find useless. Yes, a factory worker might not need algebra or calculus, but they're trying to give the widest range of skills to set you up for as many opportunities as possible.
You've got to be kidding me. Everyday I wake up, I calculate the surface area of my bed sheets, and when I go and make some cereal I calculate the volume of the bowl and the approx weight of the cereal. I discuss with my friends about Huckleberry Finn and Hester Prynne and all the different variations of 'there'. And I'm about to observe the effects of gamma particles on a rat!

Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and become wind.
Agreed. Ipads are a useful tool...but when it comes to our dependency on them, one glitch or virus in the system and you have an entire school in a mess of confusion and complaining.

If all of us give a little bit of something to a good cause, we can help to make that cause happen.
I hated maths, but I agree that the stuff we learn in maths is somewhat pointless, but helpful. I'm an administrator, I've studied two levels in High School and I'm now about to finish my College Course in Scotland.
We are required to have good grammar and knowledge of Maths (Numeracy here) and Communication (English).
So all in all, it was all helpful to me.

Self education should fulfil that purpose.

Check out my games pls.

And then I realized that I'd never make it in graphics design after a quarter of it in college.
So now I do lots of math so I can actually have a future.
Or the method you're most comfortable with, for that matter.
How about calculating the work needed to push an object? In Newtons, meters and Joules, of course...

I have to admit, that's quite impressive.

It's people like you that use and overrated sentence.
You'll use English of course if you are going to write a paper.
