That's fine, in fact, this is basically what i said on my first post on the thread about guys that use anime girl avatars, yet they got all defensive about it. I just stated my opinion and they misunderstood it. They took my opinion too literally and thought that i was 'demonizing' people, or 'enforcing' my will on people. they basically thought that i was demanding that every male that used a female avatar change it to a male avatar, when in reality i was just stating my opinion. Go to Pg 6 and read it if you want.
That's what everyone here does. If you ever try to just state your opinion, and people disagree with it, you get an angry swarm of offended "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" people flying at ya.
That's fine, I also don't think i can continue having any kind of 'discourse' with you. Considering that you were one of the people that started the 'discourse' with me it seems fitting that you end it. And as for the 'misunderstanding', well, there was a 'misunderstanding' from the beginning when you and some others here on this thread misunderstood my first post.
It seems you more tried to downplay what you said after you learned that the majority disagreed with you than anything else.
Though you claim that you understand what others are saying, you continue making statements that utterly contradict that. Your misunderstanding is far more general than simply not grasping what I was saying in that one instance. It is either your refusal to recognize what others are saying, or you inability to recognize it.

In my opinion, an avatar is kind of like an internet-shirt. You wear it everywhere you go, and it can be about anything. What you use as an avatar doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what kind of person you are.
What you use as an avatar doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what kind of person you are.
Well that analogy in itself kind of voids it then. Many people wear t-shirts that represent them in some way. They may not think it actively, but everyone will wear certain shirts over others, there's certainly some designs I would never wear.
If the analogy was to be complete, then I would say an avatar is like a costume at a convention. You can be anyone, but you choose to represent what you like most.

That is a better analogy, the shirt one was just off the top of my head. I agree that many t-shirts represent the wearer in some way, but what I meant is that you cannot think of the person in a way that you would think of the item of their shirt, because they might not be anything like what's on the shirt, but they could like whats on it.
I'll use an example. A long time ago, I used to be (embarrassingly enough) addicted to heavy metal. I'd listen to Korn, System of a Down, Disturbed, all that stuff. I actually liked System of a Down enough to buy a shirt with one of their album covers on it. However, in no way does System of a Down reflect who I was (I was just a kid, I hardly knew what they were talking about in the songs). I just liked their music.
Basically, what I'm trying to say with this is that many people just like characters because of the character, rather than because the character is similar to their personality.

Yeah, and similar to the costume analogy, the people aren't the costume they're wearing, they are only what they like about the costume.
That's what everyone here does. If you ever try to just state your opinion, and people disagree with it, you get an angry swarm of offended "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" people flying at ya.
Sorry you had to learn that the hard way.
Yeah, I kinda got that. Some people are just mean, but hey! It's the internet!
It seems you more tried to downplay what you said after you learned that the majority disagreed with you than anything else.

Downplay it? I had to explain my first comment to all of you that responded to it because you just did't get it. And whats this about 'the majority disagree with me'? You and two others are the majority? Hardly. And yes, i do understand what others are saying, why don't you get some quote's from me that state otherwise, where are your facts hmm? Maybe you just refuse to understand what i am saying or in any case, you don't recognize what i am saying at all.
And yes, i do understand what others are saying, why don't you get some quote's from me that state otherwise, where are your facts hmm? Maybe you just refuse to understand what i am saying or in any case, you don't recognize what i am saying at all.
What i think is irrelevant, yet this whole thread was started based on what we thought about men that used anime girls as their avatar, was it not? Also, i am trying to impose my opinion on others. Why? Well, its simple, this is an argument, a controversial topic, therefore i voice my opinion and i try to get people to see it my way, not everyone will see it my way, that would be impossible. I don't NEED people to change because i think that what they are doing is wrong, I am also not always right. I cant, nor will i, try to control others and what they do, especially on the internet, i can only try to convince them to see things my way, i do not demand, i only ask.
What a gross misunderstanding of what I was saying. You think the thread was made so that others can tell people that use females as their avatars why they shouldn't use those avatars, or was to enforce your own personal ideals on how one should appear in public.
It's a question I've wondered ever since I joined on the forums. There are so many anime profile pictures of girls, yet when you go to their profiles, they are men. Why do men do this? I feel like I can do it because I am a woman, but it's kinda perverted when men do it. I don't know, just my opinion. Why do you guys do it?
Huh. That doesn't say anything about, "Tell people that use avatars you don't like to not use them," Odd.
Again, as i have said many times, i do not demand for something to take place. It would be impossible for me to achieve a demand on a forum such as this, much less the whole Internet. I have no control over people, i can only persuade others to see things my way, such as others have persuaded me to see things their way. Also, the reason i said 'MAJORITY' was in fact to not leave others out, i fully understand that there are numerous reasons why people do things, such as pick an avatar. Because i said 'MAJORITY' and not the 'Whole' or 'Entirety', that leaves room for a 'Minority' or 'Others', those 'Minority' chose their avatar for different reasons than being perverted. Also, i do not dismiss the idea of a male using a female avatar, it is a fact that some males do that, for many reasons, i just find it weird, or odd.
What a blatant misunderstanding of the whole issue of using 'majority' as a phrase. It's a generalization, the formation of a stereotype, an assumption that you already know the reasons why people do what they do and can categorize them. Through the very act of attaching some stereotype to something you view as a group, a coherent unit, you are demeaning and ostracizing them from the rest. It's odd, even, that you considered calling others a 'minority' as being somehow beneficial or positive.
In fact, you did exactly that in your opening post:
I believe that the MAJORITY guys that use an anime girl as their profile pic are perverted. I understand that you like their personality, breasts, etc.
It's incredibly arrogant to make such an assumption, such a vast generalization of people. Assuming you know what other people think, or their reasons behind their decisions, is incredibly insulting and demeaning to those people.
So I would have to say, no, you do not seem to understand what others are saying, seeing as you keep reiterating the things we are saying we have issue with, without seeming to realize those very things are what the issue is.
Though I guess replying arrogantly is just as fun.
My profile character is from video game. I pick this picture because I like the character and the game.
Why people pick their profile picture as they are? That's totally up to them. There are so many different reasons.
I see girls having males as their avatars. No problem.
Probably same feeling for males, except girls find it weird.
I might have a male av, but nothing in mind. =P
What a gross misunderstanding of what I was saying. You think the thread was made so that others can tell people that use females as their avatars why they shouldn't use those avatars, or was to enforce your own personal ideals on how one should appear in public.
I have never told anyone not to use a female avatar. I just said it was wrong. I posted my opinion, and you, among others, 'attacked' me. I therefore protected myself by attempting to correct you, and the others that 'attacked' me, in mistakes made about what i had originally said and how you had all taken it too literally.
Huh. That doesn't say anything about, "Tell people that use avatars you don't like to not use them," Odd.
You are right, it doesn't say "Tell people that use avatars you don't like to not use them,". Then again, i never did. And the OP does say that her opinion is that men that use anime women as their avatars are kinda perverted. I agree with her. She also say's "Why do you guys do it?". I simply gave my opinion on why i think men use anime girls as their avatar, you don't like my opinion? Deal with it.

I said 'majority' because that is what i believe at first sight when i see males that represent themselves as female avatars. There are many other reasons why males represent themselves as female avatars, i completely understand that, its just that when i see it it just kinda hits me as 'perverted'. By 'minority' i meant that there are others that represent themselves as female avatars for other reasons than being perverted, but to me, that seems to be very small population. And yes, maybe i do stereotype a bit, whatever. It's just what i see at first glance, then again, you could always get to know them. First impressions are not always right. "Don't judge a book by its cover". I might judge others on at first glance, but i am open to other possibilities regarding who they are.
In fact, you did exactly that in your opening post:
It's incredibly arrogant to make such an assumption, such a vast generalization of people. Assuming you know what other people think, or their reasons behind their decisions, is incredibly insulting and demeaning to those people.
I said the majority, not the whole, i also said etc. I assume that most males that use a female avatar are perverted and have chosen their female avatars for perverted reasons, but not all of them. Just because i think that a specific male is perverted for representing themselves as a female doesn't necessarily mean i am right, doesn't mean i am wrong either. That man could be the least perverted person on earth, but in my mind that man will be perverted until they prove to me otherwise. Also, just because i believe that person to be perverted doesn't mean i am going to make fun of them or be mean to them , some people might, but i wont, i just think it is odd.
Let me just summarize what i believe as of now.
"I do not like it when people represent themselves as a character of the opposite gender, and you do not like me".
Why do you not like me? I don't know. Maybe because you think i am trying to oppress people, to tell people to not do something, just because i think it is wrong, or that all that i believe is right should be law? Maybe, you are just an angry little man? I don't know, i cant say for sure, and honestly, i don't care. This is about what i said, why you think it is wrong, and me having to explain myself.
I have never told anyone not to use a female avatar. I just said it was wrong. I posted my opinion, and you, among others, 'attacked' me. You prosecution complex has no place here.

Except it's not a matter of 'deal with it'. You're misconstruing a whole group of people that you are not a part of by claiming to know how they think and their reasoning for their actions. Excuse me if I wish to express great exasperation that someone would do such a thing and see no issue with it.

Odd that you can act on generalizations and anecdotes yet you demanded from me evidence and facts.
Platitudes do not excuse you from your past actions.

That is such an absurd, offensive stereotype to forward. It's so incredibly bigoted and closed-minded. You don't need to express your hatred against male-kind in all the opinions you make, you know.
Let me just summarize what i believe as of now.

There's that persecution complex again. No, I do not hate you, I simply find it absurd that you can believe in such an incredibly offensive, close-minded stereotype and yet see no issue with it.

Poem?
No, Acetyl. It's actually a song, though.

Horrible use of commas

Yeah, and similar to the costume analogy, the people aren't the costume they're wearing, they are only what they like about the costume.
Commas are for accuracy upon reading back, versus the original.
Yeah, I kinda got that. Some people are just mean, but hey! It's the internet!

wat
How? I can't use a profile pic of a character I like just because they are female and I happen to be male?
EDIT:
I can't believe some of the people in this thread...
Why people pick their profile picture as they are? That's totally up to them. There are so many different reasons.
What I'm not getting is why you people think being a pervert in general is a bad thing.
Probably same feeling for males, except girls find it weird.
