It's a question I've wondered ever since I joined on the forums. There are so many anime profile pictures of girls, yet when you go to their profiles, they are men. Why do men do this? I feel like I can do it because I am a woman, but it's kinda perverted when men do it. I don't know, just my opinion. Why do you guys do it?

Having the opposite gender in an avatar doesn't really mean much, though. Someone can be a fan of a show or something. Everyone has different reasons why.

I do because I like the character or series and/or I think the character is cute. Maybe it's that I love anime and I want to express it, it's your call on whatever you want to think.

I find it strange that men choose anime girls as their avatar. I mean, if you're gonna pick an avatar, go with one that represents your gender. If you're a guy and you use a female avatar, most people will think you're a girl, and once you've met many guys who use female avatars, you'll think mostly everyone else who uses those kinds of avatars is probably a guy, when they are actually a girl. It's confusing! Yet, I'm unsure why they do it.
And that is why GIRL stands for Guy In Real Life!

My avatar is a guy in a dragon costume. It's my character from an old game Graal Online and a friend of mine in middle school drew a cartoony avatar based on it. I've been using this avatar for about 10 years!
If I ever do pick an anime girl as my avatar, it'd probably be because I feel like their personality or behavior represents my own, I admire their personality or behavior, or I just think they look pretty.
