Because they like the character and they feel it would make a nice representation of themselves?
I don't see why you're so caught up in "By God, this person's avatar doesn't match their gender!"
I honestly don't even see why gender would matter on the internet, of all things.
on the net, it's safest to assume everyone is a guy, despite what they really are. so in retrospect, having so many female avatars around makes for good lesson and desensitization material to teach this bit of net-life wisdom. if it were a rare occurrence, then it would take longer for new people to 'get it', and increase their chances of being fooled by the ones that deliberately make every effort to trick those new people and eventually cause them some degree of psychological harm.
ps: i have no idea what gender my avatar is, now that i think about it.
Assuming everyone is a guy is very inaccurate and also sexist. There are much more females on the Internet than you think; the whole "population" of the Internet isn't solely male. There are some sites that are almost half male, half female, and some where there are more female than male.
It's better to simply not assume anything at all. They're anonymous unless they claim and prove that they are male or female.
Avatars don't need to state anything, BTW, it can even be random.
The same reason that a grown man can watch a show for 5 year old girls that has pink cartoon ponies prancing around talking about friendship and morals.
1: They think its a guy
2: They are perverts
3: They want people to think they are a girl
4: They are a homosexual (I have nothing against gays, I'm just saying)

I don't understand how people can live being so closed minded.
Honestly, I don't see how being attracted to a character makes a person perverted. However, if they started touching their own self every time they saw their avatar, that would be perverted.
I myself am transgender, so good luck finding a gender-similar image for me.

1: I doubt anyone who likes a character enough to use it as an avatar would not know it's gender.
2: I'm sure some are, but that has nothing to do with them using a female as their avatar.
3: Considering that most claim to be male, I doubt this too.
4: This is the worst argument of them all. What does liking another male have to do with using a female avatar?
Mostly because they like the character, but I'm sure some actually are attracted to their avatar (This is my best guess). That's probably a small amount, though. If you liked Bill Cosby, would it be perverted for you to use him as an avatar? (I think someone actually does have a Bill Cosby avatar somewhere on these forums.)
Hello sir.
Profile pics are just a tidbit of that person's individuality, nothing super special.

People pick anime avatars because it's [attractive factor] and they like anime.
I wouldn't have a character I'd be attracted to as avatar, it'd more just distract me when on the forums. Dunno how it's for others though...
I'm being kind of a hypocrite. Oh well I just liked this picture when I saw it. All my older avatars were variations of Beemo.
did you or someone else draw that?

Nearly all of my avatars have been female even though I'm a guy. I use them because:
1. I love women.
2. The women I use can often be used to somewhat describe my personality overall or at the time.
3. I like the specific character in my avatar.
I don't think much of it though. I just put up what I like. He's not just attractive because of his avatar.
*wink wink*
