I remember a point where I could hold 10 pounds behind my head and do 200 situps, and even then I wasn't overly muscular. My body has fallen into a bit of disuse though, I doubt I still could.

I don't like most abdominal related workouts, mostly because I do it wrong and hurt my back most of the time. And it's kinda the same way with me, I don't usually work out on my own time. I need to start again.

Pushups do that for me. They always end up feeling like they overstrain the muscles in the shoulders, or surrounding the lower spine.

You may be doing it wrong, or it could be health problems, I don't know. Sometimes modified workouts help with those sort of things, though. That's what I do with crunches.
