I avoid intrusive ads if possible. I don't mind banner ads or sidebar ads but when I have to wait and be forced to watch an ad, even if just for a few seconds, it really annoys me.
If the creator of the mod is willing to provide a non-adfly link, I'm willing to use his adfly link. Clicking on an adfly link is a simple way of saying 'thanks' to somebody. The money they make off it is pretty much negligible, but perhaps they can use it to buy a bottle of beer once a week. Oh well, at least I've contributed to that for a bit.
There are also those who somehow seem to think that their mod needs to generate money. They just give you one adfly link and that's it. "Adfly doesn't work for you? Tough luck" Those people should know that not everything in this world revolves around money. If they really think the time spent creating a mod is time wasted unless they get money in return, they shouldn't be making mods in the first place.
10 year olds abuse it by putting ad.fly on their links which will link them to the youtube channel, I haven't try'd it out but it's probably 8 pence for 10 clicks on it.
(I have AdBlock installed on my Mozilla Firefox, does tha tmean they don't get payed if I have no ads showing up on my screen)?
As far as I know they still get paid. If you want to get past an adfly link and for whatever reason you don't want them to make any money (perhaps because it's a 10 year old linking to his Youtube channel) you can use Deadfly.
i have adblock so i never actually see any of the adds, so to me adly simply means waiting a couple extra seconds to get what im after, if i think its worth it, ill use it to support the author
I really only download mods, and when I do, I prefer adf.ly links. It's convenient to be able to show appreciation for modders just by clicking, and they get paid. Also, it's the only one that has worked reliably for me. It's straight-forward and doesn't try to confuse me with ten different "Download" links all over the place to stupid crap I don't want.

How does it feel to be Master of the Universe? It's like wearing underpants fresh out of the dryer.

No, the ads aren't downloaded on firefox, but the server still believes they're being viewed, as its a clientside operation that decides to download then draw them or not. On google chrome adblockers just hide the content after downloading it, therefore they definitely get paid.
I use it most of the time. Unless Im downloading a bunch of stuff, then it becomes annoying and I look for alternate links. Or sometimes if there is a mediafire link I will use it first. I have always loved mediafire and I still do. Gives unlimited downloads with fast speeds for free and no waiting.
Back in the day when the psp first came out I was big into it. People would host files on megaupload, rapidshare. I hated those sites (megaupload was a little better than rapidshare.) I hated having to wait a minute or longer to download a 2mb file at 30 kb/s and then having to wait 5 minutes to download another file. Then one day i discovered sendspace and it was a god send. Unlimited downloads, faster download speeds and no waiting time.
Mediafire is my sendspace of 2005. Adfly is good though. 5 seconds isnt too long to wait and the download speed is good. But in my opinion it doesn't out do mediafire.

If you use an ad blocker, they don't get paid.
I will never click an adfly link if another link is present.
I modded and mapped for decades and never once expected or even want to make any money. It's crap I learned to do, and did in my spare time.
I show appreciation in the form of:
A] Downloading the mod.
and
B]Commenting, giving a +1, helping with bug sniffing and balancing.
I click them, If you can't wait 3 seconds then you have a problem. And what's the big deal, all they get for a click is a fraction of a cent. Support them, even if you don't think its worth it.

I agree with you completely. If there is a mod that I love so very much, and they do provide multiple ways of downloading, I will use the adfly link as it helps them.
I still don't like adfly as once, an advertisement was something to the effect of: Find slutty and horny people near you! And then it said there were like two hundred people near me in my small town who had signed up on that site. It also included a bit of nude and showing pics. It was obviously a virus.

That's all. :/
Nonsense. You would need around 100,000 referrals to get 80 dollars. The payout rate isn't that high.

Wanting a paycheck on top of that is pure greed.
