They may not belong there but. As I have said. They need and education so they CAN belong and become a functioning member of society. And a great way to get around the wasting money problem would be to have them pay it back after they are done with collage. Like a loan. Which, hopefully they will have learnt about in collage. If they are getting this money from the Govt. It should be easier to keep track of them and make them pay.
But the article isn't about loans. It's about grants. Free money. The fact that they're knowingly granting money to illegals implies that they're not going to require them to become legal in order to get the money. The way it was before, you couldn't get State grants if you weren't a legal resident. It makes absolutely no sense to reward people for breaking the law.

What I don't get about the whole thing though is, But they are going to be deported anyway? What stops them getting the grant then ****ing off?
Actually that's not a bad idea! but knowing how GOV. works they'll go with the less logical one which either blows money like it's dirt blocks or cuts money from good programs(SS and Medicare/Medicaid)

So they are letting people who ILLEGALLY Got into the country have State funded Financial Aid?
If that was in Britain we would have riots EVERYWHERE.
the government has been doing things like that forever. Illegal immigrants get food stamps, drivers licenses, EXCLUSIVE SCHOLARSHIPS, and now in some places it's considered racist to ask for proof of citizenship.
so now it's illegal to employ an illegal immigrant, but it's totally fine to give them money for school. - oh, and you can't ask them if they are legal or not so that you don't get thrown in jail.

Hence my thought to make it a loan. That makes much much more sense.

Aren't you people trillions of dollars in debt? Where are they pulling the money from?
You have to live in America to know what it's like. Deportation doesn't happen often.
I little over 390,000 illegal immigrants deported last year is fairly often to me. I certainly don't like this bill though. I would rather see a law passed that has a harsh punishment for those that hire illegals and sent all of them packing.

Harsh Punishment? They pick cabbage all day and eff up there backs for $2 an hour so stop complaining already.

You make it sound like any person who walks across the border can go get financial aid.
It's required that they come here as children, live here for at least 5 consecutive years, have graduated from an American High School or earned their GED from here, among other requirements. It also doesn't protect them from deportation.

Never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence.
Blame it on my being a liberal, but I actually agree with this. First of all, it's not just to anyone. The people that are eligible for the money have to:
Have proof of having arrived in the United States before age 16.
Have proof of residence in the United States for at least five consecutive years since their date of arrival.
Have registered with the Selective Service if male.
Be between the ages of 12 and 30 at the time of bill enactment.
Have graduated from an American high school, obtained a GED, or have been admitted to an institution of higher education.
Be of "good moral character"
These would be people that have the ability to contribute to society, much more than many teenagers I know. They just might not have the financial background to be able to pay for an institution of higher education.

they have every opportunity to get one but just don't plus you need to know something about this country to become one.
Right! Like, "What are the colors of our flag," and "Who was the First President of the United States?"
If you think about it, there is a very small number of illegal immigrants who actually graduate High School, and then get accepted into an institution of higher education. So really, it's no big deal. And if we can give them the initiative to get an higher education, that's excellent.

Maybe but making a limit on lets say 2500 hundred grants based on the highest ACT scores of the candidates would push them have even more incentive for trying in school would make it better.

As I said before, either change the law or enforce it. Any concessions granted to them should require them to first obtain legal documentation.
Edit: Also, the argument of "it's only a small amount of money we're wasting on pet project X" is what leads piecemeal to huge amounts of tax money being wasted on the whole.
The current unemployment rate in America is 9.1% That's reasonably high. By giving these people an education they can be more helpful in the workforce, as well as get a job easier. And eventually give back to the country.
How would putting more people into the workforce (especially more people with college degrees) solve anything?
A college degree is no longer a promise of a good job in America. It's become pitifully standard.

True but sooner or later their our debt will overcome their debt and then they'll come a calling.

Easy solution. But why don't you give it to them?
Because you're racist.

If they want to be legal, have them go back to Mexico first, then cross the border with all their papers. Problem solved.
