I don't know how many other people have noticed this, but society seems to have been slowly moving away from "manly" men for years. Gone are the days when protagonists kicked down the door and proceeded to spew one-liners and bullets in a deadly combination, I'm talking about Duke Nukem, Korben Dallas, Mal. And before I'm flooded with "but what about ________, that crazy (anime, video game) character?" allow me to define *badass*: Badass is not taking 800 bullets to the chest, It's not about defeating an entire army with your bare fists. It's about having the balls to do what others would call crazy, cracking jokes while everything goes to ****, and having a strange sort of honor and attitude that even your enemies respect. Badass is that guy, whom if where real, would be looked up to by everyone who knows him/her, this is why Gordon Freeman and the like are badasses and most (brace for impact) anime protagonists aren't. They may have depth, muscles, and a fancy gun, but the skinny kids wouldn't ever actually be cool if you threw them into the real world. They'd either be pricks or that reclusive guy down the street.
It is my belief that the age of Badass is passing, and it should be retained for as long as possible.
This is my opinion, argue if you wish, but please no personal attacks or blatant insults.

Ay, rail at gaming - 'tis a rich topic, and affords noble declamation. Go, preach against it in the city - you'll find a congregation in every tavern. - Edward Moore
I don't sleep in beds, charcoal is for wusses, and the only structures generated are mossy cobble. My score is, was, and always will be &e0. Neon grass, I miss you.
I don't really see how this matters, but yes I am rather young, though I pride my self on knowledge of popular culture present and past.

All the badasses came to Oklahoma to be badasses in the back country.
They all do badassery such as hunt, work on badass cars, and bang badass chicks.
To put it simply, they all have they're minds set on far more badass things now. lol

If I helped you in any way, or if you think my smart-assed comments were funny. Please hit the green button in the lower right corner of my post. Thanks!
The "badass" you're describing is actually a very flat and static character, something very uninteresting from a literary perspective. What we're moving towards is less senseless violence and stacked protagonists, and more unique and thought-out characters.
This is a win for intellect, and if that comes with a loss for shoot-em-up games and mindless action movies, then so be it.

It matters A LOT. Something you will realise when you are older.
I won't try to explain anything, you will learn everything you need to know as you grow up. When you are older you will look back on this post and think "lol, why did I write that?".

I'm not saying that someone who is badass is a steroid-addicted GoW3 character, I feel that the definition can encompass, many different kinds of badassery, be it hobo with a shotgun, or the hacker transferring funds from the president's account to charity while leaving his signature on it.

Well I won't pretend to know much about my future, and I do look back on things that seemed smart at the time, but this is my trying to understand what appears to be a gradual decline in a certain character type by posing a question to the public, and I don't see how this would seem stupid.

Because I'm sure a hobo would be very skilled with a shotgun.
