You know there are multiple forms of censorship right? We're not talking about finished episodes with censorship bars in them. Basically the writers wrote the episodes and Nickelodeon would return them saying "This needs to change, remove that, make this less creepy..." whatever. That's censorship that the audience doesn't usually notice because it isn't called to their attention.
But, as far as the creator of the show is concerned, the version of Invader Zim we all know isn't the version in his head. Probably very similar but also much darker.
Yes I know there are multiple forms of censorship but still. Wow. I thought Invader Zim was a happy-go-lucky cartoon show until now. It scares me...

I have decided as of late to be the reputation giver and the befriender. If you see that I gave you reputation and added you as a friend, you will know why. Everyone's my friend
What? Even the cartoon that was finally aired on screen was significantly more dark than all of the other cartoons on Nick.
Here's that picture of Gir covered in blood btw:
Something tells me that's not Nick friendly.
Well, I didn't actually see the episodes though....

That image is shown for like a few milliseconds. It got into the show because Nick didn't catch it.
What I want to know is why Nickelodeon decided to ask the guy behind Johnny the Homicidal Maniac to make a children's show. They should've expected something darker...

“If, by some strange coincidence, a hundred sharp pencils I was carrying embedded themselves in a third-party, would that be an accidental death?” - Nisemonogatari

Yea, that's kind of like asking the creators of Saw to create an educational kids show.

Oh god, no. Invader Zim is the creation of Jhonen Vasquez, who wrote the comic Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. His style permeates the show. EVERYTHING is dirty. Everything is disgusting. Everything is imperfect in some way. Even that which is supposed to be saccharine sweet is depicted in a twisted fashion. The world Invader Zim takes place in sucks, and he wants you to know this. The sound and music direction backs all of this up.
Happy-go-lucky is exactly the wrong way to describe the show.
Yes, it was lovely and grim, dark and disgusting. One of the more darker shows on air. I remember watching it and being pretty frightened, but I liked the 'different' style and hilarious characters.
Wait a minute, did that really appear on the show!?
That's like a subliminal message.
Only for like half a millisecond. If you look it up on youtube it BARELY shows up in one of the episodes. I don't know why the producer would put that in anyways.

The show was cancelled becase the creator (Jhonen Vasquez) was fed up with Nick blowing off his ideas and censoring it too much. So he and the animation artist his the bloody GIR image in some of the episodes. It was also cancelled because the show was aimed at 9 year olds and most people was 14 to 29.
They Made a final movie in 2009 though :biggrin.gif:
