America used to be a country of industry, economy, and innovation. A place where merchants and citizens alike could thrive and prosper.
But slowly, somehow, the honest industry leaders were replaced by thieves and swindlers. Now America is a country of illusions and deception. Though the criminals were always there, always everywhere, I don't think they were able to truly take over until the advent of cable television.
It is truly as Winston Churchill said; "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on."
Also, don't go to infowars.com or you'll adopt the attitude that "you're the enlightened one and everyone around you is sleeping" or some matrix ********.
Make no mistake. The US has never been a place of honest labour or honest politics. You're idealizing the past. Hell - in the past it was easy to be a lying politician, since before the advent of TV most people barely knew what you looked like. Now there's a million ways to get caught.
The past is not more glorious than the present. It's like nostalgia goggles, only with nations instead of video games.
Well there's only one response to that I'm afraid.
The politicians have become irrelevant. It is the forces behind them that make all the decisions.
What we see about the various senators and governors is just kabuki theater. The real politics happen behind the scenes. To think the government is anything more than a vehicle for other powers at this point is foolishness.

Yes, it's true. But don't make the mistake of thinking any other country is much better than the US. Pretty much every country on Earth is corrupt.
That is true, but the reason everyone picks on America is because it's a large, powerful country that tends to throw its weight around.
The over-the-top nationalism of many of its citizens is also rather obnoxious.

That and they claim to support freedom
only to gradually take it away
and claim to be for space programs
only to cut their budget to fund wars

Well, the gov't has become somewhat corrupt recently, with all the idiots who have been gaining important positions.

I really couldn't give a **** about the U.S. Government. I live in Canada, so it wouldn't affect me.

Taking away freedom? Wow, I thought only American conservatives ranted over that.
