It's pretty funny actually. I was active on Newgrouds at the time, but only checked out the front page submissions. One day I decided, "why the hell not, lets go look at some terrible animations", so I clicked on the first one I saw. It was alright, but the song was reminicent of retro games. I checked out the song, and it was made on Famitracker, a music creation program for the NES, it could also be played on the computer. I checked out the Famitracker and it's forums, and one guy posting songs posted on a chiptune music community. I roamed around the site, and found an excellet song. It made me think, "this is what chiptune is capable of?"
I've been listening to chiptune ever since.
If you're after relaxing, check out the Boards of Canada. And maybe some post-rock, though they tend to build to orgasmic crescendos. Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky.
Damn, nice music. I like a couple of the songs I just listened to, think I might listen to more of Boards of Canada later, when I have time ^^

No matter how right you think you are there will always be some one standing by to correct you.
I was introduced to it by a friend of mine who goes by the name of Jared.
Being a mexican and a party-er like myself (I'm not a mexican, but I am a party-er) he began to play these strange bass heavy tracks occasionally, and it piqued my interest. So I learned the name "dubstep". I rushed to pandora, and searched the genre section, and low-and-behold there it was.
Now, I have 80+ tracks and growing, and get plenty of (LEGALLY) free music from youtube via UKF and Vital FM.
Much love for Dubstep, and street cred goes out to my bud Jared.

My firend showed me AV7x once. On a video there was a comment saying something like "Stop fighting about Dream Theater Vs. Avenged Sevenfold, we should be gratetful that mike even helped AV7x" out of curiosity I checked out Dream Theater and instantly fell in love with their music.
On Dream Theater videos there were several comments about DT being inspired by Rush and Pink Floyd, so I checked them out and fell in love with their music.
After a while Somebody suggested Symphony X and Queensryche to me, And became addicted to Sympony X and Queensryche's album "Operation Mindcrime". After a while of listening to them, my friend showed me Pandora; I put Sympony X into Pandora and from there I discovered bands such as Kamelot, Dark Moor, Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Adagio, and Rhapsody of Fire.
And now I'm perfectly happy listening to the Symphonic Power Metal genre.
Oh yeah, and someone on MCF introduced me to Ayreon, and from there I discovered Avantasia
Most of the music I got from before middle and high school came from my folks. Dave Matthews Band, The Beatles, Dar Williams, a good range of styles. After I discovered anime music videos, I found a lot of the other groups I listen to, like The Aquabats, Blue Oyster Cult, again, a lot of styles. I tend to pick out individual songs rather than full albums. Albino Black Sheep introduced me to Dr. Steel
Ugh, I was never introduced to music by teachers. My teacher would play justin bieber in the 6th grade...
I usually surf around youtube, I found a flash video about the super mario bros that included a SOAD song. I looked them up, didn't like them because of that one song, I come back a few years later and I'm a fanboy.
I've been listening to chiptune ever since.

I do not regret doing so.
That's it.
Though this game probably started my serious interest in videogame music:
