I would freak out because there would be no explanation for it.
Since maybe 25% of people can not freak out in an acceptable manor. They would prolly go around stealing, maybe even killing. This would start an escalating conflict which would be disatrous for the surviving population. It would be years I would wager before we had a stable food supply, flowing water, trash pickup, even soap:(. Cities would be disaster zones.
I do not think it would be good for the Earth at all.
For those crying overpopulation. There is not a single first world country that has a stable birthright. (about 2.1 children per adult female over her lifetime.) If immagration was stopped first world countries would be extremely sparsely populated. About 20% of the us is immigrant of immigrant born, same with many European countries.
Here's an exercise. Get a coin. Assign heads and tails the values of life and death (doesn't matter which, just use the same value). Then for every person you care to try, flip the coin. Pretty soon you'll find how depressing such an event would be.
For those who said if half the earth's mass was lost there would be dire gravitational consequences I say you don't know gravitational formulae. Half the mass means half the gravitational influence. Distance between masses has a much greater effect over the attraction than mass.

If you are a Battletech/Mechwarrior geek you may enjoy my Timberwolf/MADCAT model (the source of my avatar) (warning: image-heavy link target) I will often edit my posts after I have posted them in an attempt to improve their clarity (I value a few high quality posts over several low quality ones; the more lengthy the post, the more time it requires to edit) so you might want to wait for a while if this post is recent and refresh to see if anything has changed before replying to it.
This is in the case of half the world population missing:
There are about 6,930,000,000 people on the planet.
Thus, we would lose 3,465,000,000 people.
The average human weight is about 155 pounds.
Thus, 268,537,500 tons will be lost off the earth. Mass which has been converted to organic human tissue.
The weight of Earth in tons is something like 5,972,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons.
As small as 268,537,500 sounds, the loss of that mass could still negatively affect the Earth's orbit.
It could be sent into a path toward the sun, or deeper space. Either way, losing 50% of human mass would suck.
Hopefully people just turn to dust for the Rapture, eh?
Also, because I feel it would be interesting to bring up here many of the world's industrial/post-industrial countries the population is static. If it wasn't for immigration it's very possible nations like Canada or the US can hold a very stable population that won't have any effect on nature at all.
So really, all you people worrying about our "massive population" need only make sure the developing nations develop so they can balance out. We don't need to have half our population to disappear.

There sorta are too many humans on earth though. Someone has to give out one time or another.

That's not the way probability works :\
For gods sake man READ THE OPENING POST!
It takes two seconds of reading to realize population, not mass.
Oh my god your not using your special font. Its freaking me out! :ohmy.gif:
Dude, the world is not made of humans.

No, because you've disappeared. Sorry, your the only one so far in this thread unlucky enough.
But then how am I still talking to you? Besides I thought this was taking place in the future, so how do you know the future?
I know the future.
I had a deal with life that if he ever kills half our population, i'll kill the rest.
Must keep my promises

I have no idea what you're talking about.
I seriously hope you never become a gambler or a statistician.

We're in stage four, some others are in stage three.
