You know what, I'm ****ing done with this forum. I can't stand it anymore. The majority of you people are spoiled suburban kids that think communism is great when you've never faced any hardship in your lives. I grew up poor. My parents beat the **** out of each other every day. You know what though, I don't blame anybody for that. These are my problems, and I have to deal with them. I live in a country that provides me with the opportunity to do anything I want. Maybe you bastards can't appreciate that, but I realized that I really don't care. That is all, goodbye, have a nice life, and I hope I never have to meet any of you in real life.

Anyway, I love America with all my heart, but I have a lot of problems with how the government runs things. Everything they do just makes no sense. I get frustrated at their stupidity. I don't know how to answer the poll by the way.

Ironic, that. One would think a person that had undergone such hardships and witnessed such financial disparity would embrace a system like communism.
The "Americas" are comprised of two continents. What silly questions.
Define "patriotic".
I chose "I am not American and I am not patriotic". I am Canadian and I am happy to live here when I see what goes on in the world (wars, famine, disease).
That said, I don't think kids should be forced to stand or sing the national anthem since before they even understand what they are saying. If you want to, then go ahead, but forcing kids to say it compulsively is no different then brainwashing.

If you are a Battletech/Mechwarrior geek you may enjoy my Timberwolf/MADCAT model (the source of my avatar) (warning: image-heavy link target) I will often edit my posts after I have posted them in an attempt to improve their clarity (I value a few high quality posts over several low quality ones; the more lengthy the post, the more time it requires to edit) so you might want to wait for a while if this post is recent and refresh to see if anything has changed before replying to it.

Eh, many of us have had hardships, too.
Anyway, I'm not very patriotic either. It's hard to be when you know what's going on. The burden of knowledge, which our recently departed friend above is likely blissfully unaware, really gets to one's patriotism.
Our government is corrupt.
Out businesses are corrupt.
These are nothing new, but the power at our fingertips is new and quite real. 1945 was our big wake up call as far as that goes, but sadly, it goes much deeper and more tragic than that.
There's a huge burden of trying to be successful in a world which is significantly less moral than you are. I've developed all sorts of quirks because I simply know too much. I can't drink soda or bottled water, for instance. I avoid most coffee as well. Chocolate, something I love, is something which I've also grown to feel bad about consuming. By purchasing any of these products, I fund unspeakable horrors. Not to mention shopping at places like Walmart or Target, much less buying electronics. It's all very unpleasant to think about.
I imagine that living in America during the height of the slave trade was like that for a lot of people as well. At least for the ones who were against slavery. Of course, their burden was lighter than ours, and their injustices were more open as well.
Patriotism, for anyone in the post-industrial world, is only available to those who are able to remain blissfully ignorant of the gears of the machine which provides us with our standards of living.

You know, I've thought a lot about this. I mean, merely by using a computer to find all of this information we are already trespassing on bad ground. Should we expect each other to simply halt our lives whenever we learn some new and horrible piece of information? Should it depend on how much our lives depend on the product in question? Furthermore, whose information should we trust? Everything given to us in America is just that: given. It's not our stuff, and we can never know for 100% certain where it comes from.
But what would a life that left our consciences completely clean even look like? I for one cannot picture it. I suppose the only way to be 100% certain would be to establish a community that supplied all of its own needs, from crops, to wool for clothing, to locally gathered wood for houses.
Surely though there must be some manner of acceptable middle ground. If you're simply living by funding less wrongs than the next guy, is that good enough? What about evaluating all the wrongs you fund and only cutting out the most heinous ones?
Like I said, I've put a lot of thought into it. I really don't think there's a right answer though.
I've never been anywhere else, besides America. Hell, I have hardly been out of the North West corner of America, so I can't really say other countries are worse. Obviously places that can't really even feed themselves are much worse, but until I live elsewhere, and can compare it, I'll say meh to being patriotic.

I'm English and to me, there is nothing worse in the world, than a patriotic Yank. They are literally, Team America, F*ck yeah!
The only time I have felt patriotic about my country really was the Royal Wedding. Made me appreciate history and to see how many other people in the country supported our heritage.
Do not fear my snagle tooth British friend Team America is here to liberate you from the tyrannical dictatorship that holds your nation in a grip of terror.
I wouldn't consider myself patriotic. I can't this stand this country, or its leaders.
Then maybe you should leave.
Just a recommendation.

I understand your rage. You really have to take into account the average age of the forum-goer on this forum. The internet is also the breeding ground for counter-culture and whatnot.
Im american but its hard to stand behind and for it when you see all the screwed up things wrong with this place. How can I get excited for a place that will ship money to other countries but leave the ones who fought for em on the street? Or how I need to learn spanish if I plan to be a manager at a chained reasturant like McDonalds. How a single mother cant get help cus she works and nothing is wrong with her but yet a woman with 8 kids gets all the help she can get cus she refuses to work.
Yeah....once we decide to throw all the rich people out and get some people in there who know whats it like to grow up on the ground, then we will see how this place turns out.
Didnt say anything about letting them starve, but they do need to take care of their own kind before they go and help others. A normal bum who did nothing and wont do nothing, leave him yeah, the veteran who served in the army and is living on the street now deserves more than that.
You are if you think "world at your fingertips" is appropriate for America.
You are if you think that phrase applies to all Americans.

All very strange and bewildering to think about.
Like anime? Try Visual Novels.
'nuff said..
Of course I'm not patriotic then

I live in Aus, and really, there's no point in being Patriotic.
Yea, there is no I in America (note: case sensitive).
*there may or may not be cake
I live in America and I hate it. I know other countries aren't perfect, but still. America has to be the worst politically and culturally.

George Carlin is always appropriate. I miss him.
