Ask for some really expensive math (or English, or biology, or chemistry.. options go on. Whatever interests you most) workbooks which come with lesson sheets. I wish I had that opportunity when I was little. :/
You won't regret it in high school, and eventually, college.
Seriously, 12 year olds love Pokémon. So does everyone.
And wow, your guys's suggestions are terrible. No one wants a book as a gift, especially not a school book... IMO.
Negatory
Turn Based Games are not my thing
especially remade turn based games
Well, 99% of people like pokémon, from my school at least. And from basically everyone I talk to. But, I can see where you're coming from.

I reccomend games like CoD, halo, homefront, etc

You are now reading this. You just lost the game.
You have just read this. You are also manually breathing.
In some middle-eastern/African countries, upon turning 12 you receive an AK-47, and become a man....
Either that, a .44 magnum, or a puppy would be great presents.

After 10:30 PST, my IQ drops to around that of a shovel, please disregard anything I say after aforementioned time, it will likely not make any sense, and is best ignored.

See, I don't get the big thing of Halo and other FPS games like that. In my opinion, desensitizing 12 year olds with games like that isn't good.

The framing of this circle on the ground
Brings whirlwinds, tempests, thunder and lightning.
How about a nice board game, Settlers of Catan is very good.
Personally, I would ask for a bottle of rum. But I'm also 27. A handgun would also be pretty sweet.
LAWL.

Tell him to make an animal out of it.

If you think your kid is up for it, i reccomend Strategy games.
Those are the only helpful games out there.

School book? Nah. You won't learn anything from a school book.
No 12 year old wants to frickin' learn as a gift. That's like receiving socks on Christmas. They're necessary, but no one really wants it as a gift.
If you're into that kind of thing.
