Luckily I have read the bible, and it makes no distinction at all between literal meanings and metaphors. There is about as much deep meaning to the bible then there is to lord of the rings.
O rly?
How about this:
Instead of looking at it with a scientific/philosophical eye, you look at it with a different perspective.

1 major reason i dont believe in religions with an all powerful god:
If they really did eexist, and they WERE all-loving and kind as they say, then why dont they stop laughing their holy-asses off watching us kill eachother over religion, hate, etc and come down, do a little magic show, and have the huuman race actually cooperate for once?
if they did exist, all it would take is one bit of real, undeniable proof they exist. Why not? They are the overlords ffs, it wouldnt take much effort, i mean, after all, they DID supposedly create the universe, right?
:/
Wh does't God appear before us, you ask? Because if an all-mighty supernatural God came in his full glory, we would not withstand it, and we would be fearful because God is so much more powerful than us.

Because he wants our unbiased obediance. He doesn't want us to follow him just because he's almighty and can torture us; he wants us to follow him without questioning his ways.
Why would you take the bible word for word if God uses metaphors so often within it?
Maybe if the bible actually made clear what was literal and what was a metaphor we could have saved millions of lives and thousand of hours of wasted time.
Maybe the part about homosexuality was a metaphor.
Maybe the creation was a metaphor.
Maybe the part about silencing women was a metaphor.
Maybe the part about stoning non-virgins on their wedding day was a metaphor.
However, many close-minded people are unwilling to compromise on things they see as meant to be literal.... that saddens me.
I've studied various religions, and I've never seen anything within them that implies that their texts should be taken literally. In fact, quite the opposite. When I point these things out to people, I am often either ignored, or disregarded because I have not read the entirety of their texts (and apparently I was also supposed to have memorized them all, as well).
Luckily I have read the bible, and it makes no distinction at all between literal meanings and metaphors. There is about as much deep meaning to the bible then there is to lord of the rings.

ah, yes, the whole 'too awesome to understand speech.
Well, i heard the same about chuck norris, does that make it true?
And our senses can pick that stuff up, the only side effects i can think of are blindness due to things such as high light levels, and mutations due to god being bursting with radioactive waves and such.
no, no, just no.

Yes really. Please point out where in the margins it is hastily written "Please don't really do this, it's just a metaphor! Homosexuals are fine!" And other examples. I'm waiting.
Basically what Walter said. You're not looking at it in the right perspective. When Jesus told parables, there was a distinction between a metaphorical and literal meaning. Take the parable of the lost sheep for example. The literal meaning is clear. The sheperd looks after his 100 sheep, and when he loses one, he tracks it down until it is found. The metaphorical meaning becomes clear when you realize that the point is that God does not let us out of his care.

Ah yes, what you said there totally contradicts what happens in the real war.
Picture that sheep scenario, now picture those sheep killing eachother with sharp objects because 'that one has different colored fur' and 'that one is fat/short lets kill it'.
Where is your god now?

And for the athiests, let me pose a question for the athiests.
This applies to the big bang, so if you don't believe in it, don't answer.
There was apparently a small dot that exploded and made the universe, am I correct?
And according to this, 'Matter cannot be created, nor destroyed'
Where did that matter come from?
How is this possible? It can't come from nowhere.

That makes no sense. What are you trying to imply by having me imagine that sheep are killing each other with sharp objects?
Quote from Sui »
That's not even comparable. Jesus was clearly telling stories, as the bible says he was. It's called a parable for a reason. So all the rest is literal truth then, I assume. Oh wait, there is no way to tell, as the Bible makes no distinction in all those other areas.
And I see no reason not to look at it with a Scientific eye. Science is normally the way to go about it as it has done only but gained ground and forced creationism and religion further and further into the corner, and eventually to the dustbin of history.
I didn't specifically imply that you should look at it with a scientific eye. Nevertheless, I think science fits in perfectly with religion. The big bang theory and the theory of evolution have many loopholes and inaccuracies.

The big bang doesn't say that matter came out of nowhere. It just says the the universe as we recognize it began as a singularity.
How did this singularity transform into the universe then? A single point in space cannot possibly change its form.

that theory is based on the fact that the galaxies are all flying outward from a certain spot in the universe, leading us to believe it was once all clustered.
What you just said is why i dont neccessarily believe in the big bang, but since our science is not complete it shall always remain a possibility, much like religion.

Well I guess god did it then. Oh Jesus christ how you have saved me.
But seriously, I don't know the answer. Perhaps someone else here does. But it then asks the question again of where did God come from, and if he has always been there.

You see, now you must follow me without questioning it. you MUST believe it, even though it makes no sense and sounds false.
Thats the kind of stuff im getting from relgion. In every religious argument ive been in, theyve always ended with either
"your soul has been taken by the devil, he is lost"
or
" you must follow without question, for that is the only way to the afterlife"
riiiiight.
to mean it sounds like they are bribing me with immortality, and threatening me with an immortal life of pain and torture.
You have no idea how bs that sounds, do you? those are the biggest claims you could ever make.
