Mexican is a race? Holy **** where have I been all these years.
People say they can't believe how back in American history, people openly hated blacks becuase they looked different. But at the time it was justified by false stories of blacks raping white girls and being little better than monkeys.
People now, hate Hispanics and all the 'illegals' because we speak differently; justifying it by creating fear that we're stealing jobs, bringing gang violence, and using up welfare and being little better than mindless workers.
Times sure have changed, haven't they? Blame the funny looking man first, the funny sounding one second, and whats next?
This entire discussion misses the point of common decency. Any reasonable person knows that racism is not limited to a single race (dur); it's not something that needs confirmation. Those for whom it does will not be convinced to leave their prejudices by a topic on Minecraft forums. In a conversation like this, one can only preach to the choir...
1. I am white.
2. I am not okay with people saying White power, and I am okay with people saying Black power, or other things of the sort. Disrespect of other people's race however, no matter who is on the giving or receiving end is wrong.
3. The reason for this, is because they are treated as lesser as an ethnic group, even if unintentionally by today's society. *You cannot deny the fact that black people, because of past events, have been given the short end of the stick.*
4. Minorities, or groups that are treated as inferior by law, society, or geography should have the opportunity to be proud about their race, religion, etc.
1. I am white.
2. I am not okay with people saying White power, and I am okay with people saying Black power, or other things of the sort. Disrespect of other people's race however, no matter who is on the giving or receiving end is wrong.
So why aren't you okay with people saying white power?
Will it become OK by 2045 when whites will become a minority in US?
3. The reason for this, is because they are treated as lesser as an ethnic group, even if unintentionally by today's society. *You cannot deny the fact that black people, because of past events, have been given the short end of the stick.*
I can.
Please explain exactly how past events result in a "short end" for blacks today?
4. Minorities, or groups that are treated as inferior by law, society, or geography should have the opportunity to be proud about their race, religion, etc.
Ever heard of Barack Obama?
Ever heard of Affirmative Action?
Many white students with great qualifications will not get into universities of choice because the space is reserved for black/latino students, even if they are not as qualified.
You must have missed out on the last 400 years. Does the word 'slavery' ring any bells?
Seriously, are you pretending not to know this or what?
Oh I know of slavery.
What I want to know is what does that have to do with today.
Various sources put the percent of white people who actually held slaves in 1800's at 5-9%.
Since then, countless black and white immigrants came to United States, who have as much to do with any of it as I have to do with Jesus being crucified.
Could it perhaps be the result of blacks statistically committing more crimes than other races?
Or am I a racist for even suggesting such an audacious thing?
I am curious: are there similar statistics in regards to Asian people?
They are a minority in the West too, you know.

Jesus getting crucified got you the biggest religion in the world. Jesus getting crucified indirectly defined your entire life and upbringing. Jesus getting crucified is still extremely relevant today. So you chose the worst possible metaphor, but I don't mind, since I can hijack it. The heritage of slavery lives on. Racism is, for a large part, that heritage. Deny that, might as well try to deny the Christian heritage.
I said what I have to do with Jesus getting crucified.
I am not responsible for the event, and should not bear any responsibility for it whatsoever, at all, not even a little bit.
Likewise, I don't see what direct negative impact an old tradition has on current generation of blacks.
"Black Power" may or may not be considered racist. It was largely employed in the sixties and seventies when civil rights were a big hot topic. As such, it wasn't necessarily claiming African American superiority, but rather manifesting a struggle by the black community to be empowered to a level permitting equality with whites. Because the phrase was shaped by the ideology of the civil rights movement as opposed to some school of thought revolving around racial superiority, it could be argued that the phrase is not racist, and that paralleling it with the phrase "white power", which was largely shaped by white supremacist thought, is a fallacy. However, the meaning can be distorted based on the speaker. If someone shouts it at a protest to police brutality towards minorities, I don't consider it racist. If Spike Lee shouts it for any reason, I do consider it racist.
3. The reason for this, is because they are treated as lesser as an ethnic group, even if unintentionally by today's society. *You cannot deny the fact that black people, because of past events, have been given the short end of the stick.*
But there is no reason because of this to deny white males between the ages of 18 and 55 the stick to begin with.
Of all the groups out there... who has no rights, privileges, or special interests protecting them, because they're shot down by the "OMG UR RAZIST" crowd?
I said what I have to do with Jesus getting crucified.

Obviously not. Luckily I wasn't talking about who's responsible. In fact responsibility has nothing to do with anything.
The historical reality of slavery have shaped the world around you, and by extension shaped you. Just like the American Civil War shaped the world and shaped you as well.
Yes, you were responding to my claim that blacks today do not get the "short end of the stick" due to events long past. (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=182245&p=2676093#p2673409)
You mentioned "last 400 years" of slavery. Last 400 years? Like, up til 2011?
You then attacked my Jesus analogy and went on how major historical events shape society, without actually pointing out how slavery hindered the lives of modern blacks.
I'd say it actually benefited them (the modern ones), since (ignoring the fact that they wouldn't exist) many of them would have most likely been in nasty parts of Africa right now, had their ancestors not been brought here.
Suffering of my distant ancestors =/= my suffering.
People let themselves get deluded into thinking they belong to some collective unit, instead of being an individual. One of the reasons I'm a capitalist, (lasseiz faire) capitalism destroys class mentality.

Black people are also probably 26 times more likely to live in scarcity (poverty) than 'whites'. Living in poverty will drive Mother Teressa to crime. The real crime is institutional violence, meaning, capitalism. Racism is a HUGE problem but even if it didn't exist at all capitalism would still create a population living in perpetual scarcity and this population would be segregated and subjugated just as the black community is experiencing now.
Under conditions of extreme scarcity human beings will eat other human beings. Different scales of scarcity warrants different human behaviour. The immediate issues are ending employment discrimination but there will still be human beings in the same predicament (under capitalism) if that task is accomplished.
Crime is a problem in 'inner city' neighborhoods. The roots of this are economic. Peoples access to the means of production, or lack there of, dictate the reality we live in.

That only works if you are part of the upper-class to begin with, dumbass.
Since it has been said better and by more articulate people; I am not going to bother telling of the racists here, other than to say that you people seriously need to get out more. I mean, really? You don't believe that there is racism today?

Oh...
Yep...
When this happens the term "Black Power" will no longer be racist.

yes, because CLEARLY they did all that heavy labor out of love for the king.
*there may or may not be cake
Also saw a documentary on National Geographic about pyramids and they said it wasn't build by slaves.
