This reminds me of a pre-ww1 movie similar to this.(animated) it begins with 1 American, and 1 German solider firing rifles at each-other. both are wearing gas masks, both are injured and die. they were the last 2 humans alive. the movie is about a group of animals (its a children's movie) that continue to live after humans are gone. ( I watched it a few years ago and cannot remember the name, sorry) movies/books like this pop up whenever there is a major conflict.

I read the short story a while ago ( i'm a big Ray Bradbury fan) and the animation didn't seem to portray the story quite right. in the story, it was described sort of a clean and sterile environment ( but then again I could be getting my post-apocalyptic Bradbury stories confused). it was still pretty nifty.
