I think the issue is that people assume all rap is the same, and judge it by the songs that get major radio play.
To each his own but there is a ton of great stuff.
I HATE RAP. I ABSOLUTELY HATE RAP. I think music is about hearing the lyrics not OMGYOUCANTHEARDEMLYRICSITALKTOOFASTOHYEAHRAPRAP.
Very few rap songs are like that. It's a technique that not many MCs choose to use. In fact, the point of most rap is to get a message across - and you don't do that well if you make the lyrics impossible to understand.
Rap can go to hell. Rap is only about sex, drugs, rape, murder or money.
Man that's not true at all. There is a ton of great rap about social issues, morality and inner-city living.
For instance, Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli) rapped extensively about society, and the issues that come with violence. For instance, from Thieves in the Night:
Survival tactics means, bustin gats to prove you hard
Your firearms are too short to box with God
Without faith, all of that is illusionary
Raise my son, no vindication of manhood necessary
They also wrote about keeping violence glorification out of hiphop.
Or what about Immortal Technique. He's pretty damn intellectual in most of his music. He also has a great song about love, not sex. From You Never Know:
So every now and then we'd stop and talk for a minute
I didn't have a gimmick so the minutes turned to hours
On her birthday, I gave her a poem with flowers
Then I took her out to dinner after her cousin's baby shower
We talked about, power to the people and such
We spent more time together but it was never enough
I never tried to sneak a touch, or even cop a feel
I was too interested, in keeping it real
Then there's The Roots. In the song In the Music, they talk about the hopeless situation in many cities, where poverty, poor education, and police apathy creates a perpetuating cycle of lost, violent youth.
A celebration of the loss of your innocence
To you old self you've lost any resemblance
They say the city make a dark impression
The youth just lost and they want direction
I really like rap. It's kind of like all pop music, sometimes you'll find rare gems that are more than suckish, but a lot of it sucks, only good for parties. You just have to look around to find the right style. It's kind of like poems with music. But if you really don't care about lyrics you can always just listen to most pop hip-hop. It's pretty catchy, and it doesn't get in the way of actual thought while you are listening to music.
I love rap with a passion. I just love the rhyming and flowingness of it. The topics I could usually care less about because 90% of the stuff rappers rap about they've never done and never would do.
There's a reason rapper rhymes with crapper. Both are full of ****. /biasedopinion
Anyway, I don't like rap at all, but I don't mind if people want to listen to it. It doesn't really bother me. A friend of mine raps... a lot... so I've become sort of indifferent to it.
There's a lot of great hip-hop music out there, just like there's a lot of great music from every other genre. If you take the time to look, you can find songs you enjoy from any of them. Condemning the entire category is closed-minded, senseless prejudice.

I don't condemn it, i just don't like it. It just doesn't sound good to me.
This is why we can't have nice things. The SECOND goddamn post was a perfect example of the contrary!

Depends. When will the next harvest moon rise?

On topic: I don't really listen to music, but most of the rap linked to or talked about on this page seemed good (when I went and listened to it.).
The only rap song/ rapper I have some respect for.

I like how you blatantly ignored the post directly above you.
I usually dislike rap and hip hop, however, I think Outkast is awesome.
SORRRRRYYY MISSS JACCKSSOOOOON
OOOOO
Good song.
The only commercial rap I will ever listen to.
(The Harry Potter rap is cool ._.)
Raise my dragons please!!

You heard that, green and red.
Yeah, he's pretty good.
Here's a song he does with the Bonus Stage music from the original Sonic game. It's kinda awesome.
Relic of a bygone age.
I don't condemn it, i just don't like it. It just doesn't sound good to me.
