We've always filled our dead-space. One way or the other. Our attention to reality isn't at all changed.
It's not a quality that's new or necessarily wrong; and suggesting it is isn't going to make you any older. To folk they do have a lot of legitimate business whether formal or casual they do on their phones and given how much easier it is to pack a phone in your pocket than it is to throw a laptop over your shoulder it's understandable that they'd use it so much for IM'ing or voice-chatting with friends, relatives, or business associates. When you're waiting for a bus to come, or the doctor to see you for your 9:00 it's nice to have something to read to fill in the dead-space. These are flexible machines for a mobile and active generation.
And when my generation is still spending a bulk of time hanging out with friends/family on their free time then the phone is something useful to organize that, or show them your vacation photos without hauling in a whole computer to the bar just to look at pictures of you in Miami. And they allow you to consume your TV as you go. Our priorities aren't changing; they're moving to a new medium.
Not to mention land-line phones are expensive and getting a cellular plan is a lot cheaper and easier than maintaining a land-line plan, or getting a TV-internet-phone bundle plan when you're only going to use two of those. Or one even, if all your TV is via streaming services; so you just need internet. Which a phone can do.

Theres really nothing to do outside when it's a scorching 95 degree day while on summer vacation, not to mention I got sunburn a week ago just being outside for like 10 minutes. I never said I was better or worse, how arrogant that would be.

I could but I live in the middle of a small town of like 1000 in the mid west, driving like 20 minutes in the hot sun while going to a movie isn't really the best idea, also there aren't really any movies coming out within the next month that interest me, I watched that new Independence day movie and that star trek movie in the theater about a month or 2 ago.

I do have a smartphone, I use it mostly for texting friends and family. When you have a PC with lots of games on it, it draws my attention away from the phone (besides texting friends and family) I drove 2 hours to a lake with my friends a few days ago, and got sunburn again even though I had sunscreen on.
So by complaining about one addiction for one digital device you admit to one on another (PC gaming)?

I don't remember that section here, I originally joined this forum back in March 31 2015 when I was about a year younger but didn't act like it. I wish forum games (and subsections)'s posts still counted as regular posts, imagine how high people's post numbers would be, I'm regularly taking part in one called "the valley"
