I have never fit into society very well. Not because I have any issues with people, or that I have trouble with commitments, or even any lack of skills. No, all of this is fine, and I even have a great work ethic. Last year, I graduated from High School with fantastic grades and the promise of success ahead of me.
But I have a few problems that make me reluctant to start my life the way everybody else does. You see, I don't see the point. My heart isn't in it.
Let me explain further. I don't see why I would want to go to a job I hate, every day for the rest of my life, just so I can make enough money for food so that I can live long enough to go back to that same job I hate and keep repeating the cycle just like everybody else I have ever met. Like I said, I have a great work ethic. But when my heart isn't in it, I CAN'T do it. So, I have decided to break the cycle.
My plan is to sell everything I don't need, and that I won't need after my journey ends, then buy all the gear i need to live off of: I have a backpack with a secure hidden pocket for money, a camel-pack to hold water in, toothbrushes with toothpaste and various other hygiene items, and a sleeping bag. All I need now are cooking items such as a compact, portable camping stove and certain pots and pans, as well as a compact portable backpacking tent. I know how to make due without a home and a steady, static water and food source. Note and remember that I have skills and experience.
Also note that every single Sunday for almost a year I have hiked 12 miles (every time) through the desert. Sometimes 16 miles. I forgot to mention the need to wander and explore that I was born with. I have also been going through strict weight training for a while. I am healthy and I am on no prescription medication.
I'm going to start at the West Coast and make my way East, and often times I'll deviate from this if I hear about or remember a place I want to see. I think my goal is to find a place I'll feel happy existing, and living an actual daily life. However, i do want to explore and see all the famous American Cities that I've never been to. L.A., Las Vegas and other cities in Nevada, Graceland, Houston, New York City and D.C., just to name a few off the top of my head.
I would like some advice from any of you, though. I know there's no way I've thought of everything about this. And as well, if any of you have done anything like this, anything at all, I was hoping you could share some tips and other assorted advice about doing something like this.
i'll be sure to give a great eulogy once you overheat and perish on the side of the road
I would be happy to direct you to the examples where people my age, with my skill set, experience and training, did NOT overheat by the side of the road, and instead got back just fine after a journey equally harsh and equally as long as mine will be.
Just because YOU as well as MOST FATSO, COUCH POTATO AMERICANS are too lazy to do something, doesn't mean that people all over the country, not to mention the world, live just like this every day, and most of them are only there because they have a troubled past and enormous problem. I, on the other hand, have no such problems (though my past is admittedly a little troubled) so I would say that is an advantage. I can do this, I believe in myself, stop being passive aggressive.
I'm looking for help for my journey, not help for how to end my life early by sitting down constantly in a desk, or a couch, eating food that's terrible for you, and never getting actual physical activity, and then never being able to see my own country?
No, I'm doing this whether people help me or not, the difference is that I might have a better chance of living comfortably if I get advice first.

Not to LOOK COOL AND HIP. I hate those people!. I'm doing this to figure myself out, and figure out a place I wouldn't mind existing in this crap-shoot of a country. Get off my back, please.
If you would like to give me actual, tangible advice, then do so, otherwise, get out of here, please.

if you hate the country that might you can always just, y'know, leave. nobody is forcing you to stay
unless you live in north korea in which case i would like some advice on where to get good wifi
All of this is well and good, but I would really like any advice anyone has to give. Seriously, I'm going through with this, I'm interested to know what common knowledge or common, sensible actions might not be a good idea in certain situations. I don't know everything, but I'm sure some of you may know a little about this. Keep in mind that this is not the only forum that I've posted this thread to.
Are you looking for advice like survival skills etc..?
Pretty much any and all advice I can get. I'm talking to lots of other people on other sites, and because I'm trying to be smart about this, I'm getting together all the knowledge that I can.
"Grr, everyone in the country except me are such sheep doing things they don't like to survive! I'm going to be different! It's not a phase, mom!"
Seriously, though, if you're going to do something like this that's all well and good -- just do it because you want to, not because you want to be different from everyone else. Maybe find someone to sponsor you and give the money to charity if you're seriously considering walking across America.
This actually sounds a lot like me, I've never found a place that just "does it" for me, and I've traveled all over the country. There's an incredible world out there, and I don't want to be bogged down with work so that I can dream of one day reaching out for it. Once I have some money, I'll be gone. Out into the desert, out in Chicago, out on some beach in California. I will go where I please, and you can very well do the same. You just need to believe, and preferably also know how to survive. Anyways, I'll be taking the same journey in just a couple of years when I get out of college.
I guess we're both lone wanderers.

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall, and not a soul to hear.
Here's something I could use advice on. I have two backpacks, and I have to choose one to take with me. The main aspects I need to choose between are quality and space for supplies. One of the backpacks can hold double the materials the other can hold, but the other is designed for hiking and can withstand more. The backpack with more space will allow me to carry more food and water, allowing me to travel much farther distances without needing to slow down, but on the other hand, if one of the straps breaks while I'm in the middle of nowhere, I'm at a loss. But the other backpack is designed for extended use in hiking through various terrain, so I won't have to worry about that, but it will only hold half as much food and water, so I may be setting myself up for a bad situation. Thoughts, anyone?
Take the hiking backpack, if you have the skills, you should be able to get food when you need it, and having something to carry important things is better than having something that can carry more important things but for less time.

Okay, so I decided to use the non-hiking backpack, and simply strap the hiking bag to the outside of that. Problem solved.
But I have a few problems that make me reluctant to start my life the way everybody else does. You see, I don't see the point. My heart isn't in it.

Troll logic that works in real life, or is it a life hack?
