I think personally people do it because either one, it's a trend with some people, or that they do it because there username is already taken.
One way to tell (from my experience) is:
If it's Xx[name]xX or xX[name]Xx, it's the trend.
If it's something like [name]xX, [name]x, or xX[name], it's cus the username was taken.
It's not a big difference visually, but there's different reasoning.
When it's on both sides, it's just kind of "edgy" looking (sighing at 11 year old me making usernames).
When it's on one side, it's because it doesn't really draw away from the main name, and it's less annoying than numbers.
That's just my experience with it. I have friends, and then myself, who did/do the X thing for a lot of different reasons.

They're usually either <14 year old kids, or people who haven't been able to change their username.
Let me tell you. I hate this username with a passion. I've changed my name/switched accounts on things I've been able to, but I haven't been sure if I could do either on forums like these...
I was really edgy when I came up with this username (I made it when I was like, 12-12.5 and kept it until I was maybe 14.5??).
It's just some "lol emo edgy cool" fad that people have and are still into. After the phase is passed, it's an embarrassment you can't seem to escape from.
I'm just glad my actual Minecraft username isn't this.
I just found out that you can change your username here, just scroll down to the part where they talk about usernames and click on the email, then you can ask them to change it. There's one road out, do you choose to take it?

Silly me sent them an email a few days ago, only to realise I set up this account with a different email (I switched emails like a year ago.) But I resent the email and fixed it up so I'm now just awaiting a reply!!

To me it's just something that people do to their usernames - I don't judge people because they have X's in their name. It's a trend, doesn't really bother me.

I'm on a bit of a hiatus from playing Minecraft, so I'm not so active in this forum, either. I still check it though, and participate in a few discussions.

It's some kind of stupid fad among kids that think they're cool if they have a username like that.
It's like the usernames that end in 420 or 69, dumb and overused.
Says the guy who chose the username 'Mustang83', lol.

Minecraft is not medieval-themed!!! As a matter of fact, it doesn't have a set time. And when and WHY did putting reponses in the quote, especially long ones, become a trend in the Suggestions? It's rather inconvenient, mainly since the OP has to gather your quote up manually. Avatar made by Endergirl!
Sadly, it's not a fad. I was around on the internet as far back as the late 1990s, and I can safely say that this thing wasn't even new 15 years ago. It probably started as how "x" = kiss and "o" = hug (like you'd see on a grandmother's christmas card... xoxox), but people have probably since forgotten that meaning and just tack it on to look trendy.
