I've come to ask you guys what makes LoL so addicting. I don't have a clue why people play it for bazillions of hours on end and don't expand their gaming horizons. I understand that the game is great (because I play it), but my friends are stuck playing this game. What makes them feel hooked to this game?
I'm asking because my friends have not played anything other than League for the past month.
probably because its easier (yet can be rough still) than most MoBAs and games of other genres
More relaxing than games like HoN and DotA
Where Dota And HoN are fast paced and intense and everyone is yelling
like that gif pretty much stuffs going kinda crazy
I played atleast 1000 games of league of legends and MAYBE 700 games of HoN and DotA combined
just gets on your nerves when you screw up in the other games but league is kinda whatever
fixed
Well..
When you win a match in League of Legends, your body, the reward system specifically releases dopamine, making you feel good. (Oversimplifying)
You also get this when doing things like eating food, reproducing, and drugs (but don't do drugs).
Honestly, I know quite a few people who spend ungodly amounts of time either playing or watching LoL. The reason is because they wanna be the very best (like no one ever was!), and when being the best can win you millions of dollars and give you massive bragging rights over pretty much all gamers (as most gamers have or still do play LoL), that just encourages them to only play LoL. The reason LoL is more popular than other MOBAs is because it was the first (it brought something niche into the mainstream), same reason why WoW is by far the most popular MMO. It got there first and people then joined to play with their friends, then people get invested into their account and don't want to leave for another similar game. As for LoL being easy, well it is easier than games like dota but when compared to most other games LoL is far harder and takes alot of skill to not suck, even more to be good.
Well that's what I think anyway

Are you serious? LoL wasn't the first MOBA (the first MOBA was the first DOTA, a mod for warcraft III)
IF you want to really dig backwards, the forst MOBA was in fact Starcraft itself when using the "Aeon of Strife" Custom Map. In fact it was a conversion of that Custom Map to a WarCraft 3 Mod that created Defense of the Ancients.
and WoW wasn't the first MMORPG (I think it was some JRPG who tried it first).
It was Ultima Online, closely followed by EverQuest and Asheron's Call. it wasn't even really the first one because there were games with similar capabilities (playing online with a large number of real people) being beta-tested in 1986.

I think what gets people onto LoL is that anyone can play it. It's free, and it doesn't require that much skill to learn it (that doesn't mean you don't get better with practice, of course), and of course the before-mentioned Browser-game-addiction.

All the older MOBAs and MMOs were played by a small following but LoL/WoW were the first of their kind to get into mainstream and as such their popularity exploded. Yes there were ones before them, but 99% of people only found out about them after the genre entered mainstream. LoL was the first mainstream MOBA and MOBA wasn't even a genre before it came along.

MOBAs themselves? they are addicting in the same as any other game is, but appeals to a different audience than puzzle, action, or shooter genres. Your skill is tested in different ways, and it makes you feel good whenever it's validated that you are better than the other guy, when you nuked six people with a killstreak, beat a puzzle that was frustrating you for days, or when you pulled off that sweet gank that gave a triple kill to your carry.
I don't know that last feeling... I play support. So basically the barometer of feeling good is "I made up for a bonehead move that my ADC made."
Or, even if you lose you just keep searching for that next dopamine high and you can blame your jungler, or feel that you could have made better plays and get better.
Why League itself?
Well, the barrier of entry is relatively low. Compared to other MOBAs, it's easy to pick up. Granted, it's still hard, and it takes someone better than me to even be decent at it (I play support for a reason). Therefore, people won't be so quick to judge the game for being too hard. Therefore, you can blame other things.
Whether a low barrier of entry is bad or not is a different matter entirely.
Why not look for other games? Because humans like to stick to what we know.

Ohai. I'm THAT guy. You know me.
Something something Fimgaming. Shameless Z. Plug out.
LoL and DotA -styled games aren't really my cup of tea. I've tried them both (I'm obliged to. I can't reject a game without trying it, especially if it doesn't cost money to try) and I didn't like the way those games work. I'm not sure why. I know how to play and know how the game works, but I just don't like it.
I have a number of friends who are rather addicted to either one of the games. I'm thinking it's the feeling of winning a round, and the fact that the game has no fixed ending, and it's new everytime you play it. It's like a FPS, a new round means a new round. However, you get to improve your character(s) like in a MMORPG.
Anyways, there really isn't a reason for addiction. They like it. They play it. They can't stop. Addicted. Tada.

Don't argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
As someone who likes to enjoy a match from time to time, I see why it's popular, but what I don't see why people can obsess over it to a point where it's all they play (I have lost 3 friends to the craze, and now we don't even talk anymore because they are playing League 24/7)
As someone who has a fairly decent Steam library, I have plenty of other games that I could play, and I highly doubt I'll ever become addicted to it as bad as I am addicted to (modded) Skyrim.

What? Those sentences were contradictory.

Check out my game! It's an open-world, sandbox text adventure.

I think that would actually explain WoW as well.
You misunderstood what I said.

"The male ones!"
I'll get out...

Because it's fun? It's like Nascar, some like it, others don't get it.
LOOK AT THAT LEGENDARY LEFT TURN! WOW!
In reality, it feels like the same grind over and over again, with just a few differences separating the individual matches.
