So currently right now I'm downloading the Black Mesa mod for Half life 2 and I just wondering of the reasons why Valve is holding episode 3 back. Some people are saying they ditched/ canceled the franchise for good. Some say that they won't make enough money off of it. Some even say that they are working on making source 2 for a better game quality experience. Hell some even say that they wanted to get portal out of the way since Gordon might use the portal gun in episode 3. Although Valve has a tendency for holding back games and their release dates remember, the longer the game takes, the better the game will be. Only time will tell.
I'm assuming they're waiting to make Half Life 3/Episode 3 for the next innovation. If you compare Half life 2 and Half life there is a major difference graphically and game function wise. Adding realistic psychics, and character models with emotion was a big step up, which made Half life 2 without mentioning the other great features the game had. That said, I'm assuming Valve wants to have that same affect with the next HL. This is my best guess.
As a large fan of the Half-Life series, I'll say this: they're digging themselves into a hole with this. If they continue delaying and delaying, when they release the game it'll be another Duke Nukem Forever case - the time built too much hype and the game will fail the expectations set by all those years.
I'm hoping for the best, of course, but it's an horrible business strategy that they're doing. They need to finish the project soon if they want it to be successful.
If it's been in development at all, then it's been in development for over five years- almost as long as GTA V has.
I wouldn't be surprised if they're working on Source 2 in secret, as rumors are aplenty. And so they can give themselves the room to work up to Half Life 2:Source (2): Episode 2: Part 2 before they run into any more trouble with this "3" nonsense.
Valve isn't really hyping their game like Duke Nukem Forever did. Duke Nukem Forever said "Hey, we're going to release it..... nope nevermind." While on the other hand, Half-Life 3 is saying "..."
The hype built is the hype done by fans or by small jokes by Valve. I have faith that Half-Life 3 wont be a total failure of a game like Duke Nukem Forever was. Why? Because they're Valve. When has Valve made a bad game?
Valves a fish out of water when I comes to developing half life three, they are using more wide open natural areas as opposed to the urban environments of most of their games, they're also completely revamping the source engine into the source 2, but I'm pretty sure they're working on it they just haven't made enough progress to say anything

There is a city this darkness cant hide, there are the embers of a fire gone out but I can still feel the heat on my skin and this mess we're in you and, maybe you and I we can light up the night. socially awkward person coming through
Wasn't the whole idea of having episodes made so we wouldn't have to wait 5 years for the next part of the story like the wait between HL1 & HL2? I didn't want a whole new engine for HL2 ep 3, I wanted a whole new engine for HL3. >
Because they can't keep up with the hype, most likely.
They want to make sure that the game won't be a huge disappointment and they're likely having a hard time fitting the standard imposed on them by their fanbase.
At this point, whatever they do with the game is going to have to be pretty extraordinary.

I'd assume if Source 2 came out right now and HL3 was the first game on it I'd guess Tf3 would' be made in about 2-4 years.

maybe, just maybe.
That wasn't a bad game. It was different, but not bad.It might've been bad. But there was other contenders. Valve on their own hasn''t made a single bad game.
Even that wasn't bad. It was terrible in comparison to their other games, but above average compared to most games, IMO.
