I was just looking through my computer, I saw the game that used to be my favorite, Spore. I got really nostalgic when I learned that there are no more updates for it and no new expansion packs. Anyone else used to play Spore?
Spore was one of the most ambitious projects Maxis attempted (while it was still Maxis, it got absorbed into EA during development). I remember early interviews with Will Wright calling it "Sim Everything". That sounded amazing.
Sadly, what began as "Sim Everything" ended as a bunch of unfinished minigames slammed together into one giant incohesive mess. I really wanted to like Spore, but in the end, there just wasn't a lot to like about it outside of its creature, building, and spaceship editors.
Spore, for me, ranks high in my top lists of biggest disappointments in gaming. I would love to see another company take a shot at something like that one day, because I think it has a lot of potential. The problem is that meeting that potential probably takes the time and resources of developing an MMO... but without the potential for as much profit. It's unlikely that we'll ever see this idea fully realized, and now Spore remains a unique point in the history of gaming.
I think what EA wants to do now is to just try and sell the concept. The glitches and things that need to be patched/expanded wouldn't be much return on their original investment considering that so many HAVE left. Projects like DarkSpore are really being marketed as a way to sell the original "customization" spirit of Spore that allowed players to skin their experience as they wish. It's become a way to sell the engine.
Of course, perhaps if they went through and fixed the issues and did more beyond Galactic Adventures they could have saved it. If they at least introduced some things to the Spore site they could have salvaged the community or allowed it to live on longer. But of course, people then learned to mass up/down rate which drove a lot of people out and ensured the deal went to Hell.
It was a good game, to bad EA took the games franchise in the wrong direction with Dark Spore, etc. The game was great and Adventure expatiation really added onto the game for people that wanted to go back to that creature stage.
